1. The document describes an experiment conducted to determine the rheological properties of viscosity and yield point of a drilling fluid sample using a Fann viscometer.
2. Key aspects of the experiment included preparing the mud sample, measuring its viscosity at 300 and 600 RPM, and determining its plastic viscosity and apparent viscosity. Calibration of the Marsh funnel and factors affecting rheological properties are also discussed.
3. Sources of potential error in measuring viscosity are described, such as improper mud weight, excess or insufficient fluid, and improper reading of the measuring scale.
The document describes an experiment conducted using an M900 viscometer to measure the rheological properties of drilling fluids. The M900 viscometer provides automated measurements and can test both muds and cements. It offers advantages over traditional methods like increased accuracy and easier operation. The experiment measured properties like yield point and plastic viscosity of water-based drilling fluids containing various additives like guar gum and gum Arabic. The results showed guar gum provided the highest gel strength but poor filtration properties while gum Arabic was less stable but had better filtration.
The document describes an experiment to determine the pH of drilling mud. It provides background on pH and how it is measured. The experiment involves first testing the pH of pure water for calibration, then preparing and testing a mud sample. The pH is measured using a digital pH meter and any correction factor from the water test is applied. The results are recorded along with the temperature. Questions at the end address the impact of pH on drilling operations and how to adjust pH with additives like sodium hydroxide.
The document describes an experiment to measure the funnel viscosity of a drilling fluid sample using a Marsh funnel viscometer. The Marsh funnel viscometer measures the time required for a certain volume of fluid to pass through the funnel, providing a measure of viscosity. The experiment involves preparing a drilling fluid sample, calibrating the Marsh funnel with fresh water, then measuring the time for 946cc of the sample to pass through the funnel. The funnel viscosity measurement provides an indication of changes in the drilling fluid viscosity over time, though it does not directly measure the true fluid viscosity. Potential sources of error during the experiment are also discussed.
1. This experiment aims to determine the amount of filter loss and filter cake thickness using a standardized API test apparatus.
2. The student measured the filter loss over 30 minutes at room temperature and 100±5 psi using the API test apparatus, which has a fine screen to simulate the wellbore wall and allow measurement of deposited filter cake thickness.
3. Key factors that control mud loss include the volume of filtrate lost into the formation, thickness and strength of the filter cake, and differential pressure between the wellbore and formation. The ideal filtration results have minimal fluid loss and a thin, tough filter cake.

1) The document summarizes an experiment conducted by a group of students to determine the surface tension force in a tapered vessel and communicating tubes, and its impact in real life applications.
2) The experiment measured how surface tension causes the water level to rise higher in narrow capillary tubes due to cohesive forces between water molecules. Adding soap reduces surface tension.
3) Surface tension is explained by molecular theory - molecules on the surface experience a maximum downward force due to an unbalanced distribution of neighboring molecules, giving the surface film its minimum energy configuration and tendency to minimize area.
The document describes an experiment to plug core samples taken from a reservoir rock. Core plugging involves cutting cylindrical plugs from core samples using a specialized plugging machine. This is done to prepare the samples for further reservoir tests and measurements in the lab. Standard plugs are used to determine properties like porosity, permeability and fluid saturation. The procedure involves securing the core sample in the plugging machine, drilling cylindrical plugs using lubricants, and trimming the plugs to the required dimensions for testing. Core plugging is an important step in analyzing core samples to evaluate reservoirs.

5. Polysters
• Polyester is not significantly affected by most compounds of the following classes:
alcohols, dry cleaning solvents, halogenated hydrocarbons, ketones, soaps and synthetic
detergents or water (including sea water).
•Polyester also has good to excellent resistance to aqueous solutions of most weak acids
at the boil and to most acids at room temperature, but is disintegrated by 95%
concentration of H2SO4
•Polyester products also have good resistance to most aqueous solutions or strong
alkalis at room temperature, but are degraded by the same solution at the boil.
• Oxidizing agents and bleaching treatments ordinarily used by the textile industry also
do not degrade polyester fiber. Stretch at work load limit is approximately 3-4% and
polyester does not lose strength as a result of moisture absorption. The acceptable
temperature exposure range is -40°F (-40°C) to a maximum of 194°F (90°C).

12. Storing
WSTDA RS-14.4.1 states:
“Polyster roundslings should be store in a cool,
dry and dark place, to prevent loss of strength
when no in use through exposure to UV (Ultra-
violet rays)”
How to recognize UV degradation:
When the roundsling covers are stiff and/ or
faded.
In this case; remove the sling from service.
EDCINTL.IMS.FM.033.R3

Inspect slings daily before use and frequently during use.
Slings must be removed from service when any of the following
substandard conditions exist:
• Chemical damage; including acid or caustic burns, brittle or stiff areas, and
discoloration of any kind
• Melting, charring or weld spatter on any part of the fittings
• Holes, tears, cuts, snags, broken or worn stitching, or any abrasion in the sling cover
that exposes the core yarns
• Knots in the sling (If unable to release it)
• Extensive abrasive wear
• Stretching, cracking, pitting, distortion, or any other damage to the fittings
• Other visible damage that could affect ling strength
• Sling identification missing, illegible, or incomplete (required: manufacturer ID, code or
stock number, rated capacity for hitches, core and cover material)
Polyester and Dyneema are both synthetic (man-made) materials; polyester units are light weight and very competitively priced; Dyneema are extremely lightweight and compact offering a greater working load limit than polyester.
Slings carry their loads in one of three primary hitches.
The work load limit (WLL or SWL) of the sling is affected by the hitch that is used.
Most slings can be used in all three hitches, but some slings are designed for use in only one hitch.
Slings have the largest work load limit when used in a basket hitch.
The work load limit of a vertical hitch is 50% of the basket hitch. The same sling would be assigned a different work load limit for the choker hitch. The choker work load limit is a maximum of 80% of the vertical work load limit per ASME recommendation.
