The central nervous system consists of the brain and spinal cord. The brain is divided into the forebrain, midbrain, and hindbrain. The forebrain includes the telencephalon and diencephalon. The spinal cord runs through the spinal canal for protection and is divided into cervical, thoracic, lumbar, and cauda equina segments. The meninges are membranes that cover and protect the central nervous system, including the dura mater, arachnoid, and pia mater.
