This document provides an overview of an organization called Enabling Enterprise and their mission to enable enterprise skills across school curriculums. Their approach includes providing teaching resources, student events, and a teacher network to support embedding enterprise skills in subjects like ICT. 1. An Introduction to Enabling Enterprise Our Mission : We enable students to succeed, by enabling schools to deliver high quality accredited enterprise education, across the whole curriculum.

3. Who we are: We want to enable enterprise in every subject – not just business ! This Project has collaborated with 270 students across 10 schools in 2008-09 to deliver high quality, accredited enterprise education, primarily through an after-school club format but also through normal lessons. We are now expanding to enable students through enterprise skills across more subjects, including ICT .

The problem we address: Enterprise skills including financial literacy, teamwork, organisation, presentation skills and understanding of the world of work are all critical for students’ future success . However, enterprise skills are rarely developed or acknowledged. This programme will allow teachers to embed enterprise skills throughout the ICT curriculum , through after-school clubs or every day teaching. We make sure these skills are accredited and so fully recognised .

5. Our approach: Our approach combines providing: Teaching Resources – everything teachers need from lesson plans to activities, to accreditation materials. Student Events – termly events which provide a focus to activities and resources. Teacher Network – to provide on-going training and support.

7. How your school will benefit: Accreditation means student achievements contribute to school success. Embed enterprise throughout the school. High quality materials for extended schools programmes. Can be used as a G&T enrichment, or as a NEET intervention. Our non-profit status means school financial contributions are minimal.

8. Accreditation: Our ICT programme will use the NCFE Level 2 Certificate for Developing Enterprise Capabilities as its accreditation basis, equivalent to a grade B GCSE. Assessment is through collecting evidence of learning outcomes, and there is a very high pass rate. Both of these will contribute towards school results, and the pass rate is extremely high.

9. Embedding Enterprise: Enterprise education is a key part of work-related learning, which is statutory at Key Stage 4. The government recommends that enterprise skills are embedded across the curriculum, not just reserved for one-off days or business studies. Our ICT programme provides everything teachers need to run an ICT-focused after-school club which also embeds enterprise, or gives ideas and resources to embed in everyday teaching.

10. Extended Schools: Extended schools are increasingly important, but can be unfocused and a drain on teacher time. Our “Enabling Everyone” programme provides all the resources that teachers need to deliver a weekly subject-specific after-school club, which culminates in a worthwhile Level 2 qualification. Our events motivate students with a clear goals, and our network supports teachers.

A good intervention: The “Enabling Business” programme has been used by teachers as an enrichment option for G&T students to stretch them in different ways, and encourage them to use and develop new skills. However, it has also been used as an intervention for unmotivated or disaffected students as the mix of fun activities and challenges, and exciting events have proved motivating. These students also benefit from the accreditation particularly.

12. We are non-profit: Enabling Enterprise is a non-profit organisation , which uses volunteers and will use the support of organisations like Teach First and UBS to deliver its ICT programme. We ask schools to pay a contribution towards our costs of £600 per year, for training, access to all the resources, and access to three termly events. This compares extremely favourably with most enterprise education providers, as we do not want costs to be a barrier to students accessing high quality enterprise education.

14. What’s in it for you? You can get involved in different ways: Lead an ICT or Enterprise-focused after-school club in your school. Embed Enterprise in your daily teaching. Lead the development of the ICT strand through our Summer Project and Fellowship schemes.

15. Why lead a club or embed enterprise? Lead an exciting new initiative in your school as your school project , with potential for your ideas to reach nation-wide . Access a huge number of exciting enterprise activities to enrich any classroom lesson. Equip your students with the skills they need to succeed, while engaging and building better relationships with them. Engage a base of contacts from across business to support you. All while minimising the hassle normally associated with running an after-school club, or embedding enterprise in class.
