The CDO (and their team – clearly, they cannot work alone) must be
empowered by the C-suite to drive change and deliver business value.
A CDO needs to articulate the strategic vision to business users.
However, equally important is to articulate the data and analytics
needs of the business users to senior executives.
Need to generate a culture that embraces data at the heart of the
decision-making process and to embrace experimentation.
Drive self-service analytics and data science innovation through agile
development, and experimenting around new business ideas.
Fail fast, with a level of autonomy from the IT department.
But also work closely with the IT department to ensure a smooth
transition as tactical projects move into production.
The role of the CDO/CAO

Conclusions
Data is being seen as increasingly important to almost all organizations. Those that
don’t recognize the value of data and invest in it risk losing out to those who do.
Attempting to become more data-driven is not without it’s challenges. It is necessary to
invest in organizational and cultural change to generate a culture that embraces data at
the heart of the decision-making process
A solid investment in data governance and data quality enables democratization of self-
service access to data for analysts and scientists while maintaining access controls for
privacy, security, regulatory and data-quality reasons
