01 Christopher Columbus, a great explorer
02 First voyage: The great moment
03 Second voyage: The expedition begins
04 Third voyage: Arriving in paradise
05 Fourth voyage: Sailing the Americas
4. Its beginnings
Genoa, Italy (1451)
He enjoyed watching the
sea, strolling along the
harbor and contemplating
large vessels
His first jobs were as a
craftsman and merchant
He learned the
navigator's trade. He
perfected the making of
maps, observation and
reading of the stars
and astronomy
5. Is the Earth round?
● At that time, the information that we can obtain today with great speed and certainty
did not exist, so when Columbus received this statement, he wanted to verify it by
making a few voyages at sea
● Navigating on the high seas was a very dangerous and difficult adventure, since they did
not have maps or GPS, but had to learn to orient themselves and to use the compass or
the astrolabe, two elements that allowed them to go in the desired direction
● Christopher Columbus saw an opportunity to create a new economic route across the
seas, so he set out on the voyage
7. Presentation of the project
Columbus' project was to
reach Asia, but he needed
money to finance the voyage
Columbus met with the
Catholic Monarchs of Spain
who agreed to help him in
this adventure
He was granted a document
committing him to be
admiral, viceroy and
governor of the territories
he won during his life
8. Santa María, Pinta and Niña
Santa María, Pinta and Niña were the names of his three ships
They left Palos de la Frontera on August 3, 1492
The voyage lasted five weeks, until a sailor sighted land on October 12 of the same year
Thus, he reached the lands that corresponded to the Caribbean territory, but since he did
not know the lands, he called them India, thinking that it was the destination he
had reached
10. Traveling old and new horizons
The Catholic Monarchs of Spain after the return of Christopher
Columbus were very excited, for that reason, they asked the
navigator to go again
He was much better prepared than on his first voyage since he had
great economic support, so he sailed from the port of Cadiz with 17
ships and over 1,000 men
11. The first conflicts appear
● The natives living in that territory were completely
invaded by the people who had come to their land
● Columbus also traveled with ecclesiastics, scholars of
science and men who sought a better quality of life
and to dedicate themselves to research
● Thus, the first settlers decided to stay and occupy the
new lands
13. Is this paradise on earth?
● Between 1498 and 1500, Christopher
Columbus made his third voyage, to the
Indies. He still wanted to find a shorter
route to the riches of Asia
● He did not reach his destination, but he
did reach "paradise on earth", since he
reached a large area surrounded by land
due to the force by which the Orinoco
River flowed into the sea. Based on the
biblical quotations, Columbus was sure
that he had reached paradise as it was
described there
15. The beginning of the end
● In 1502, Christopher Columbus made his last voyage,
leaving 4 ships and more than 150 men to explore what we
know today as Central America, i.e. Honduras, Nicaragua,
Costa Rica and Panama
● These were difficult and dangerous sea routes. This caused
two of their four ships to be lost at sea
● The following year, in 1503, they reached the island of
Jamaica, where they were able to accompany the navigator
with his health problems back to Spain
16. Return to Spain
Upon returning to Spain, Columbus had lost all his benefits assumed in the compromise
agreed in 1492 with the Catholic Monarchs
The only hope he had left was Queen Isabella the Catholic, who died in 1504, leaving him
without any kind of support
His health was getting worse and worse, and his struggle for recognition as the great
explorer was becoming increasingly remote
Admiral Christopher Columbus died in 1506
