Exploring the adoption of building information modelling (bim) in the malaysi...eSAT Journals
Abstract The construction industry believes that Building Information Modelling (BIM) is a platform that has the potential to promote collaborative activities in the construction industry. Thus, clients are gradually enforcing the use of BIM in their projects, resulting in many construction companies investing in BIM technology in order to fulfill clients' needs. Therefore, the goal of this study is to explore the process and the level of BIM implementation in the Malaysian construction industry. This study was conducted as an exploratory study through literature review and interviewing the organisations that have had BIM experience. The result reveals that Malaysian construction industry players are having difficulties to implement BIM because they do not know where, when and how to start as there is no national BIM standard and guideline for them to follow. Lack of government involvement worsens the current situation besides having the resistance to change from people. To reduce the resistance from people, most of the companies came out with their own strategy such as developing new BIM unit, developing training and education program, changing management style and developing new roles and responsibilities. These activities could facilitate people and the organisations in adopting BIM because BIM is not only a technology but it is also involved in changing the current practices and processes including changing managerial function and hierarchy, including roles and responsibilities. Small to medium scale pilot projects can be described as the best practice to adopt BIM in reducing the risk when migrating from the traditional approach to a new approach. This study also identified that BIM Level in the Malaysian construction industry is between Level 0 and 1. Index Terms: Building Information Modelling (BIM), Malaysian Construction Industry, Government Roles, National BIM Standard, Training and Education, Change Management.

Hierarchical Digital Twin of a Naval Power SystemKerry Sado
A hierarchical digital twin of a Naval DC power system has been developed and experimentally verified. Similar to other state-of-the-art digital twins, this technology creates a digital replica of the physical system executed in real-time or faster, which can modify hardware controls. However, its advantage stems from distributing computational efforts by utilizing a hierarchical structure composed of lower-level digital twin blocks and a higher-level system digital twin. Each digital twin block is associated with a physical subsystem of the hardware and communicates with a singular system digital twin, which creates a system-level response. By extracting information from each level of the hierarchy, power system controls of the hardware were reconfigured autonomously. This hierarchical digital twin development offers several advantages over other digital twins, particularly in the field of naval power systems. The hierarchical structure allows for greater computational efficiency and scalability while the ability to autonomously reconfigure hardware controls offers increased flexibility and responsiveness. The hierarchical decomposition and models utilized were well aligned with the physical twin, as indicated by the maximum deviations between the developed digital twin hierarchy and the hardware.

Immunizing Image Classifiers Against Localized Adversary Attacksgerogepatton
This paper addresses the vulnerability of deep learning models, particularly convolutional neural networks
(CNN)s, to adversarial attacks and presents a proactive training technique designed to counter them. We
introduce a novel volumization algorithm, which transforms 2D images into 3D volumetric representations.
When combined with 3D convolution and deep curriculum learning optimization (CLO), itsignificantly improves
the immunity of models against localized universal attacks by up to 40%. We evaluate our proposed approach
using contemporary CNN architectures and the modified Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR-10
and CIFAR-100) and ImageNet Large Scale Visual Recognition Challenge (ILSVRC12) datasets, showcasing
accuracy improvements over previous techniques. The results indicate that the combination of the volumetric
input and curriculum learning holds significant promise for mitigating adversarial attacks without necessitating
adversary training.

ADDRESS
DR P V UNNIKRISHNAN
Member Secretary, Kerala Development
Innovation Strategy Council
KEYNOTE SPEAKER
I emphasize the importance of the Knowledge Economy
Mission and how it covers all the needs of society in the
rapidly evolving modern economy. The creation of Centers
of Excellence in Higher Education as part of the Knowledge
Economy Mission’s goal will help the educated unem-
ployed find gainful employment, perhaps ushering in a
digital change across all economic sectors and fostering
innovation.
He then said that, continuous improvement is necessary to keep up with changes in the technology
landscape and products, systems, and processes everywhere else. Skill must address each of these.
Digitally prefabricated building construction includes integrating, designing the components, plan-
ning for that integration at the factory, looking at the logistics, and finally completing the construc-
tion of the building. The building construction business, he continued, has undergone such radical
change both in the state and the nation. Unfortunately, our local industry was unable to adapt.
He expressed his joy that BIMLABS had taken the initiative to advance this programme for develop-
ing new skills and connecting local academic institutions that could do so, and that BIMLABS had
made the appropriate connections with the Sector Skill Councils to carry out their mission. In the
Strategy Paper for the Knowledge Mission, construction technology is stressed as a major source of
new business opportunities.
He is delighted to collaborate with BIMLABS on a global basis through its’ skill partners, ICT Academy
of Kerala, ASAP Kerala, and KASE, in support of the Knowledge Economy Mission. Additionally, he
stated that he would be delighted to start conversations on behalf of BIMLABS regarding potential
partnerships with ULCCS and other relevant institutions and organisations.
The Knowledge Economy Mission is attempting to interact with the NSDC Sector Councils to
increase possibilities for young people in the State.

5. NARENDRA DESHPANDE
CEO, Construction Skill Development
Council Of India
KEYNOTE SPEAKER
With the present economic speed, the projected number
of openings in the sector would be over 8 crores today on
the ground. With the pace of growth of the various Central
Government development programs, in the next five years
the demand for employment is going to grow from the
current 50% manpower shortage to around 15 crores. This
is our estimate, based on our secondary research.
He said that, the Construction Skill Development Council was established in September 2013 to
serve the construction industry. It now includes three other councils that were suggested by the
Sarada Committee Report: SSCs for plumbing, painting and coating, and infrastructure. As a process
of rationalisation, these councils are currently proposing to merge. The main goal is to bridge the
gaps between the concerns of the academic community, the business community, and the industry,
which also includes the training aspect.
The demand for construction and civil engineering will continue to be high and is the only discipline
connected to any other industry. The industry and academia should collaborate, so he requested to
make BIMLABS the Council's Affiliated Training Partner so that there will be a lot more happening
in the coming days, especially in new courses like BIM.
He discussed the difficulties he has had in finding BIM-trained employees. The industry is confused
about who to recruit, whether a BIM Moduler or someone with any of the BIM skill sets that will help
the organisation reach its objectives. The CSSC is on a quest to do BIM occupational mapping. The
industry would then be able to easily comprehend the numerous duties that are necessary for vari-
ous forms of BIM activity. As a result, BIM professions will be given a formal definition, creating new
career prospects. Clarity will be made around the type of BIM training that employees get.
He promised complete support for any efforts by the State Government to launch anything similar
to India Skills-State specific - the CSSC would be more than pleased to associate themselves and
contribute all necessary assistance in terms of funds and a healthy environment that would encour-
age skills. CSSC exists to help not only BIMLABS's initiatives but also the ambitions of everyone,
including an aspirant wishing to qualify as a trainer or to qualify for a job.

6. PRESENTATIONS BY
SKILLING AGENCIES
SANTHOSH C KURUP
CEO, ICT Academy of Kerala
SPEAKER
The mission of the ICT Academy is to empower youngsters with
employment skills in the field of information and communication
technology. According to a survey by the Times of India, on aver-
age, a pupil is taught, instructed, or made aware that there are
just seven professional alternatives accessible to them. BIMLABS
would face similar challenges and worries because employment
opportunities in the digital building were unknown to Engineer-
ing Colleges and other institutions. This conference will focus on
these concerns.
ICT Academy is happy to collaborate with firms such as Bimlabs, where we wanted to work on
Enterprize systems- these are system tools, and technologies that are functional but have applica-
tions outside of the tech industry. Collaboration with ICT Academy and Bimlabs will aid in deter-
mining whether digital construction is a marketable skill. Without a doubt, technology is becom-
ing more of a horizontal that works across verticals. It is critical to grasp and implement technolog-
ical abilities that will be game-changers for the country and the planet in the coming years and
decades.

SPEAKER
The construction industry is based on highly advanced opera-
tions. Slowly, a transition is taking place with the NSQF standard-
izations, which are industry-driven—people from industry and
academia collaborate to design a curriculum that makes
students more employable. He described the many courses given
by the Indian Institute of Infrastructure & Construction (IIIC) at
Chavara, an institution established by KASE and owned by
ULCCS. There are three levels of programmes available: techni-
cian, supervisory, and managerial. In these parts, many debates
take place in IIIC, and we want him to have some communication,
customer service, and leadership abilities as well.
Construction, specifically BIM structure, is done as part of a project and beyond. He also stated
that most skilling agencies, including KASE, will be collaborating with BIMLABS to capitalise on
the prospects, and he stated that he was looking forward to collaborating and working with BIM-
LABS and other skilling agencies.

The panel discussion highlighted the potential and challenges within
the sector during the recruitment and upskilling processes to prepare
personnel for project execution.
BIMLABS is taking advantage of the chance to share its knowledge and understand what is happen-
ing in the industry, making this a fantastic opportunity for all of us to connect, exchange, and learn
about what is happening in their business. The discussion covered the expectations of the indus-
tries and how students might approach them.
Shri Babu Gopalakrishnan, General Manager,
India Eurosia, discussed the various career
opportunities existing in the sector. There are
opportunities for Programme Managers who
should be familiar with the laws and norms
governing the US and European construction
industries and use BIM as a technological
service for any needs the customer may have.
There are opportunities for team leaders,
coordinators, and entry-level jobs for BIM
Modelers who work in the structural areas
and the MEP areas. He also pointed out that,
a realistic understanding of current concerns
in the sector is required, and the organisation
must connect with the sector regularly to
achieve this. The possibilities for BIMLABS are
in trying to bridge the gap between industry
and academia so that the ecosystem is more
hospitable for both.

10. Launch of our new Business
Initiative
The discussion was followed by a Q&A session where the panellists interacted with the participants.
According to Shri. Narendra Deshpande, CEO, CSSC, Sridhar Vembu's theory can be used to identify
abilities. His approach was to find someone with the correct aptitude who fits the framework, and if
one can't find the talent they are looking for, train them and develop the skill. The occupational
mapping and the job roles of the BIM industry are getting defined soon. BIM is a kind of technology
that gives you a life cycle in the entire virtual mode. Mr Arun Alex, the IAC Coordinator at KTU, point-
ed out that businesses like BIMLABS have the chance to address this gap in the ecosystem. The
industry cannot handle everything, so our first responsibility is to take care of our clients and cus-
tomers.
Our new initiative, Bzigns from BIMLABS

12. Mr Arun Alex, IAC, Coordinator, KTU, said that KTU has given the sector the chance to provide a
three-credit elective, which would take 40 to 45 hours to complete. Industry can create the curricu-
lum, administer the programme, and evaluate the students. The mode of delivery is not required to
be traditional; it can be online or a combination of both. We are going one step further and mandat-
ing a two-month internship after the second semester for MTech students, followed by a full year of
dissertation work in the industry. This implies that they would only receive classes in the first year
and would have to work in the field the following year. It all comes down to the fact that we need the
business community to plan, deliver, and evaluate to guarantee that these students fully satisfy
business expectations. It is entirely up to the students to decide whether or not they want to pursue
a career in a particular industry, and it is equally up to the industry to determine prerequisites if nec-
essary to identify students to whom they would like to offer this industry elective. This is a win-win
model. According to him, a publicly financed university with this many associated colleges would be
the first in the nation to offer a course with a full year of industrial field experience. KTU is attempting
to integrate the skilling component with the credit because it has been observed that students are
not either taking it seriously or understanding the value of it when they are studying for their engi-
neering degree courses when skilling is provided separately without any academic intervention.
Prof Sarif M, Asst Professor, CET, said that
there have been numerous talks on gradu-
ates' diminishing employability skills during
the past ten years. The main issue at hand is
whether or not we ought to be developing a
curriculum that complies with industry
norms. Producing graduates with critical
thinking and lifelong learning skills should
be the primary tenet of education delivered
in a higher education institution. To ensure
that software is naturally included in the cur-
riculum, we must consider integrating it
with the theoretical courses rather than
having separate areas for it.
Dr Cini Hod, IIIC, Chavara, said that even
while the IIIC is making every effort to close
the gap between industry and academia, the
main obstacle is a lack of understanding of
the significance of developing these skills.
Shri. Narendra Deshpande, the CEO of CSSC, explained the concept of Recognition of Prior Learning
and pointed out that RPL is an effective tool if used judiciously and it should not be misused for issu-
ing certificates for issuing sake. He also stated that technology is merely an enabler or a facilitator in
and of itself. It's not about learning—you pick up a specific tool or piece of software and join BIM-
LABS. However, your chances of landing a job only improve when you know when, where, how, and
where to use a tool to best utilise the primary domain talents you already possess. A tool is merely a
facilitator to add to your CV to provide you with more prospects; it won't get you a job.
