SAY and DO
SAY
“The students don’t get support from the university to find a job apart from 2-hour trainings”
“The program doesn’t have incentives to help students get employed”
“Coming from abroad, I am not familiar with the job market and culture in Europe and
America”
“On the job market I feel like a blind kitten ”
“At the beginning of my program, I did not know what I wanted to do after, but now when I
know I don’t have time for job search since I’m busy with my internship”
“Few students stay full-time with the companies they interned at”
“I don’t feel confident enough to apply to the jobs I don’t technically qualify for even if I think I
can succeed in the role”
“It’s much easier for me to find a job in Russia, my home country, than here”
“I don’t know how to present myself to employers”
“The biggest challenge is the feeling of uncertainty”
“The majority of students on my program are from the Netherlands and don’t face the same
issues and choices as international students do”
DO
“We exchange information about companies and openings with other international students”
“I am not very active with my job search at the moment although I know where I want to
apply”
THINK and FEEL
• THINK
– Finding a job in Europe is much harder for international students
than for Europeans
– The program does not have a stake in the students’ success
after graduation
– There is a big difference between recruiting process in Russia
and abroad
– European and American employers do not value experience
obtained in other countries and therefore she is disadvantaged
• FEEL
– Disoriented and a little bit lost
– Insecure about her skills and qualifications
– Alone, with little support from peers and the program
PROBLEM STATEMENT
A smart and diligent graduate student in usability
from Russia studying in the Netherlands, looking for
a job in Europe or America, with two years of
relevant work experience
NEEDS A WAY TO
learn about the job market in her field and the
strategies to succeed
BECAUSE
international students have limited information and
experience and face harder challenges in finding a
job
