3. Mr. Jack
Mr Jack is an undergraduate student studying
Mechanical Engineering for the past 2 years. He
has been studying in the Indian Education
System for the past 18years. He is a very keen
learner and loves to experiment what he learns.
He is very sensitive to his surroundings and
keenly observes small phenomena around him. He
believes in action more than words.
5. SAY
1. “ I’m a person who is really bad at mugging up the textual
content”
2. “ Learning through seeing and by doing, I feel is more
effective than trying to imagine the process while reading
the theory of the process itself”
3. “ I can relate better to things I can see, than the things I’m
asked to imagine!”
4. “ I would love to experiment everything I read if it was
possible to do that.”
5. “I feel the most theoretical subjects like history can be
made interesting by using visuals to teach.”

6. SAY
6. “Mind perceives the idea better when it can see and feel –
you know imagination can be vague.”
7. “During my high school I was always very excited to see
how a gear system worked when our teacher taught us the
gear ratio.”
8. “ As an undergraduate student I still don’t get to
experiment with what I’m learning as a part of my syllabus”
9. “ Education system here focuses more on grades than
actual learning itself”
10. “ I’ve always learnt by science lessons by watching related
experiments or demonstrations of the topic I’m reading
about”

7. SAY
11. “Magnetism was one chapter I hated during my high
school. All I could see were the field lines, apart from that I
could neither see it nor feel it!”
12. “Learning for the sake of learning should be discouraged.”
13. “Interest in a particular subject can spread through logic
and visuals of what you are trying to convey through
words”
14. “ I do realize there are topics where demonstrating a
concept through an experiment is tough, in such cases I
would use pictures and videos. For example nuclear fission
is hard to demonstrate in reality but a video will always do
a better job than asking kids to imagine”

8. SAY
15. “There are a lot of concepts you can observe around
you if you are watchful about your surroundings”
16. “ In days like now where technology has grown to a
large extent I’m sure it’s not hard to find pictures and
videos on your lesson topics!”
17. “Focus on how learning can be made effective using
the existing technology is what the schools have to be
thinking.”
18. “I believe that learning is a continuous process.”

9. SAY
19. “ More lab work helps engineering students
to do better.”
20. “ Mechanical engineering has a lot of
practical lab work to do and that’s why I chose
it!”
21. “ Look around you, you might find things
that amaze you!!”

10. DO
1. He spends time in the lab observing his juniors,
classmates and professors work.
2. Tries to relate to his subject of study what he
observes from his surroundings.
3. Inquisitive behaviour
4. Carries a note book around to note things he
observes
5. Goes back to these written points and tries to
understand concepts behind it’s working.

11. DO
6. Questions the theories.
7. Challenges himself to innovate.
8. Keeps track of his work.
9. Open to learn from everything around him.
10. “Silence”

12. THINK
1. I think Jack has a problem converting every
concept to a form that can be visualized.
2. Jack is uncomfortable with theoretical subjects.
3. Jack wants to always keep learning new things
4. I think subjects only interest him if he can either
‘see’ or ‘feel’ it.
5. Jack is bad at reproducing the textual matter that
he just reads.

13. FEEL
1. Jack feels learning is effective by perceiving
concepts through visual means.
2. Jack also feels that learning is not effective by
just reading a textual content.
3. Jack feels observation can make learning better.
4. Jack feels “mugging” is not the right way to
learn things.

14. INSIGHT
1. Jack has limitation in learning by reading
concepts.
2. He looks forward to “actions” more than
words.
3. Has a preconceived notion that learning is
not effective by just words.
15. PROBLEM STATEMENT
“ Jack needs a way to learn theoretical subjects
effectively because he believes effective
learning happens only through experimental
demonstration of the concepts.”
