Ellis Island operated as an immigration station from 1892 to 1954 where the U.S. Bureau of Immigration inspected over 12 million immigrants. The island was owned by the federal government. The highest single day number of immigrants inspected was 11,747 on April 17, 1907, and over 3,000 immigrants died while being held in the hospital on Ellis Island.
