Labor unions are legally recognized representatives of workers that fight for increased pay, benefits, and workplace safety. They are mostly made up of public sector workers. Some of the earliest and most influential labor unions included the Knights of Labor in 1869 led by Terence Powderly, the American Federation of Labor in 1886 led by Samuel Gompers, and the International Ladies' Garment Workers' Union formed in 1900.
