Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) allows organizations to exchange standard electronic documents like purchase orders and invoices directly between computer systems, enabling automated processing and cost savings. While EDI originated in the 1960s, the internet boosted its use across many industries. Early EDI used closed proprietary standards, but internet-based EDI now uses international standards, allowing organizations to transact with any partner using the same standard. However, multiple competing standards still present interoperability challenges.
