In 1895, Sir Jagdish Chandra Bose produced electromagnetic waves between 5mm and 25mm in wavelength, but his work remained confined to the laboratory. In 1896, G. Marconi became the first to establish wireless communication across the English Channel at a distance of 48km. In 1901, Marconi succeeded in transmitting signals across the Atlantic Ocean between Newfoundland and Cornwall. He was awarded the 1909 Nobel Prize in Physics for his pioneering work developing wireless telegraphy, telephony, and broadcasting.
