a bit about MOOCs: past, present and future
MOOCs began in 2011 with large enrollments but issues with assessment and accreditation. While they provide benefits like brand awareness and education democratization, their sustainability is unclear given high production costs of hundreds of hours per hour of video content. MOOCs reach massive scales but face-to-face education is also massive globally. Reusing MOOC material in blended learning shows promise. Learning analytics must address student heterogeneity across courses and institutions.

Communication is an integral part of our life. We use our communication skills while reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Almost the whole day is spent in communicating with others. Communications with others is critical. None of our day to day activities whether personal or professional can be completed without communicating. We keep communicating may be verbally or through writing to our friends, family members or professional colleagues. However, has it ever happened with you that someone to whom you were communicating asked you a question, “What do you mean” or “What you want me to do”? Sometimes you must have found yourself saying, “But I mean to say”, or someone who is talking to you says, “No, No, what I wanted to say”. Have you ever found yourself saying to your superior about your subordinate, “Sir, I told him several times, but I don’t know why he does not listen? Or “I don’t know why he does not do it”? All these questions and statement point out only one thing and that is, “Communication is not as easy as we think it is”.
It is very rightly said, “Communication is done by the listener”, as whatever the other person makes out of the message only that can be considered as the message communicated by the speaker. Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
