More Than Monitoring: How Observability Takes You From Firefighting to Fire P...DevOps.com
For some, observability is just a hollow rebranding of monitoring, for others it’s monitoring on steroids. But what if we told you observability is the new way to find out why—not just if—your distributed system or application isn’t working as expected? Today, we see that traditional monitoring approaches can fall short if a system or application doesn’t adequately externalize its state.
This is truer as workloads move into the cloud and leverage ephemeral technologies, such as microservices and containers. To reach observability, IT and DevOps teams need to correlate different sources from logs, metrics, traces, events and more. This becomes even more challenging when defining the online revenue impact of a failed container—after all, this is what really matters to the business.
This webinar will cover:
The differences between observability and monitoring
Why it is a bigger challenge in a multicloud and containerized world
How observability results in less firefighting and more fire prevention
How new platforms can help gain observability (on premises and in the cloud) for containers, microservices and even SAP or mainframes
Serverless computing allows running applications without managing infrastructure. Google Cloud Platform offers serverless options like Cloud Functions, Cloud Run, and App Engine. Common serverless patterns include publish-subscribe using PubSub, triggering functions from events, and data pipelines with Dataflow. Serverless applications are built using containers, functions, and fully managed services to focus on code and reduce operational overhead.
This document discusses observability and its three pillars: logs, metrics, and traces. It introduces common observability tools like Elastic Stack, Prometheus, and Jaeger. Logs should be aggregated and indexed, metrics can use recording rules and alerting, and traces enable root cause analysis. Best practices include monitoring components, testing configurations, and retaining sufficient log data. Observability provides insight into systems from external outputs and context about internal states.
The document discusses the shift towards cloud native application development. Some key points discussed include:
1. Cloud native originated in customer-facing tech companies and emphasizes building applications in, for, and maximizing the benefits of the cloud.
2. When developing new applications, organizations should focus on functional and non-functional requirements to determine the appropriate architecture, runtime environment, and degree of "cloudiness".
3. Cloud native development requires learning new topics like microservices, DevOps, serverless computing, and distributed systems.

The adoption of container native and cloud native development practices presents new operational challenges. Today’s microservice environments are polyglot, distributed, container-based, highly-scalable, and ephemeral. To understand your system, you need to be able to follow the life of a request across numerous components distributed in multiple environments. Without the proper tools it can feel impossible to determine a root cause of an issue. This requires a new approach to operations. We will review a series of open source observability tools for logging, monitoring, and tracing to help developers achieve operational excellence for running container-based workloads.

AWS re:Invent 2016: Effective Application Data Analytics for Modern Applicati...Amazon Web Services
IT is evolving from a cost center to a source of continuous innovation for business. At the heart of this transition are modern, revenue-generating applications, based on dynamic architectures that constantly evolve to keep pace with end-customer demands. This dynamic application environment requires a new, comprehensive approach to traditional monitoring – one based on real-time, end-to-end visibility and analytics across the entire application lifecycle and stack, instead of monitoring by piecemeal. This presentation highlights practical advice on how developers and operators can leverage data and analytics to glean critical information about their modern applications. In this session, we will cover the types of data important for today’s modern applications. We’ll discuss visibility and analytics into data sources such as AWS services (e.g., Amazon CloudWatch, AWS Lambda, VPC Flow Logs, Amazon EC2, Amazon S3, etc.), development tool chain, and custom metrics, and describe how to use analytics to understand business performance and behaviors. We discuss a comprehensive approach to monitoring, troubleshooting, and customer usage insights, provide examples of effective data analytics to improve software quality, and describe an end-to-end customer use case that highlights how analytics applies to the modern app lifecycle and stack. Session sponsored by Sumo Logic.

Connect Ops and Security with Flexible Web App and API ProtectionDevOps.com
Organizations continue to adopt container orchestration to drive efficiencies in their CI/CD pipelines. Given the current business climate with more employees working from home and consumers transacting more online, how can development and operations teams release at increasing velocity with protection baked in?
Connecting operations and security teams have not always been a smooth process: developers and operations staff are charged with site reliability, availability, and uptime while security staff is held responsible for securing an organization’s always-moving perimeter and valuable web layer assets. But the lines have started to blur between DevOps teams and security: you can’t guarantee uptime without baking effective application security tooling into your processes and infrastructure configurations.
A true next-generation, holistic web application and API protection platform does just that: operations teams can integrate security into their workflows and ensure new infrastructure and app code released to production is both effective and secure. Join application security experts Aneel Dadani and Orlando Barerra II from Signal Sciences to learn how your team can deploy at scale safely while gaining layer 7 visibility in production environments. Attendees will learn:
How to inspect web traffic in containers, at the API gateway, or the ingress
How DevOps teams can scale their application footprint to meet demand while securing your codebase in production
How development teams can gain visibility into how their apps and APIs are being used in production and what vulnerabilities may exist that they overlooked
Demo these application security concepts with Ansible, a simple yet powerful IT automation engine that companies use to accelerate DevOps initiatives, including baking application security into their infrastructure.
The 12-Factor App methodology defines best practices for building software-as-a-service (SaaS) apps. Essentials of Automations: Exploring Attributes & Automation ParametersSafe Software
Building automations in FME Flow can save time, money, and help businesses scale by eliminating data silos and providing data to stakeholders in real-time. One essential component to orchestrating complex automations is the use of attributes & automation parameters (both formerly known as “keys”). In fact, it’s unlikely you’ll ever build an Automation without using these components, but what exactly are they?
Attributes & automation parameters enable the automation author to pass data values from one automation component to the next. During this webinar, our FME Flow Specialists will cover leveraging the three types of these output attributes & parameters in FME Flow: Event, Custom, and Automation. As a bonus, they’ll also be making use of the Split-Merge Block functionality.
You’ll leave this webinar with a better understanding of how to maximize the potential of automations by making use of attributes & automation parameters, with the ultimate goal of setting your enterprise integration workflows up on autopilot.
