El Salvador has maintained diplomatic relations with Taiwan for 91 years. Key events in their historical relations include El Salvador establishing a consulate in Taiwan in 1922, Taiwan recognizing the People's Republic of China in 1971 but El Salvador continuing relations with Taiwan, and the two countries signing a Free Trade Agreement in 2007. Currently, El Salvador's main ally is the United States but it also has military, trade, cultural and educational ties with Taiwan. High-level official visits between the two countries have helped strengthen their partnership.
