Ex 3:13 And Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What is his name? what shall I say unto them?
2. El Elyon!
Ge 14:18 And Melchizedek
<Malkiy-Tsedeq> king <melek>
of Salem <Shalem> brought forth
<yatsa'> bread <lechem> and
wine: <yayin> and he was the
priest <kohen> of the most high
<'elyown> God. <'el>
3. If you have never engaged in a study of the
names of God, I would strongly encourage
you to!
♦ Most conclude that there are no less than
72 to 77 nouns used in reference to God and
as many as 365 verbs.
♦ These many different and unique names of
God each help us to understand Him better,
and to better understand what He is like!
♦ By these we are able to understand “who
God is, & who is God!”
4.
5.
6.
7. How important our names?
♦ How many of us have heard or maybe even said, “I
don't care what you call me as long as you call me
something sweet!”
♦ This may work in general, but are there times
when names are “important?”
♦ What about naming a child?
♦ What about when we are paid?
♦ Three basic reasons for names!
♦ Names show intention!
♦ Names show identification!
♦ Names show importance!
8. Tonight we will be looking at
God as El Elyon!
♦ This name is only used 4 times and all
within 5 verses.
♦ 3 x by Melchizedek (Gen. 14:18,19 & 20)
♦ Once by Abram (Gen. 14:22)
♦ In our lesson we want to notice 3
qualities or attributes of God made know
by this name!
9. I. God is a God of Strength!
♦ How many of you remember the story of Gideon
from (Judges 7) Gideon is called by God to dwindle
down the number from 32,000 to 300 men against a
great multitude!
♦ God wanted Israel to know who was their
strength! Who had the power to win!
♦ This is the same kind of situation we find in (Gen
14)
♦ 4 kings go out to fight 5 and the 4 win!
♦ They take ago Abram’s brother’s son Lot!
♦ Abram goes after them with 318 servants!
10. So we ask, “how was Gideon &
Abram able to win against these
armies?”
♦ The answer is really quite simple, it was
God fighting for them! They went out in the
“strength” of the Lord!
♦ The battle belongs to the Lord!
♦ El Elyon reminds us of the strength of
the Lord, God Most High!
11. II. God is a God of Sovereignty!
♦ How often do we take time to ask, “who is in
charge?”
♦ We sure could save ourselves a lot of trouble by
understanding this principle!
♦ Anytime we put anything or anyone before
God, there will be trouble!
♦ Mt 6:33 "But seek first the kingdom of God and
His righteousness, and all these things shall be
added to you.”
♦ Remember the way the book of Matthew
ends? (Mt. 28:18-20)
12. Because God is sovereign we must
learn to live according to God’s will in
our lives!
♦ Col 3:17 And whatever you do in word or
deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus,
giving thanks to God the Father through Him.
♦ Act 4:19 But Peter and John answered
and said to them, "Whether it is right in the
sight of God to listen to you more than to
God, you judge. Cf. 5:29
13. III. God is a God of Supremacy!
♦ I can remember some years back that a
popular bumper sticker read “God is my co-
pilot” which implies that God is riding with
them, but isn’t it really the case that we must
ride with Him!
♦ I wonder how often we miss out on God
because we only want to drive and not ride?
We want to do things our way or the highway
and we often wonder why they fail and then
ask God why He didn’t help us!
14. We want to go where we want, we
want to have what we want and when it
doesn’t work out we want to blame
God!
♦ Who will always be more qualified to direct our
lives? Us or God?
♦ Pr. 14:12; 16:25
♦ Is. 55:8-9
♦ Jer. 10:23
♦ It is only when we learn to truly submit to God
that we win! (Js. 4:7-8)
15. Conclusion:
♦ Truly God is good to us! We serve an
awesome God!
♦ The difference name sof God help us to
better understand who God is and who is God!
♦ El Elyon! God Most High!
♦ God of all Strength! All Power!
♦ God of all Sovereignty! All Authority!
♦ God of all Supremacy! All Control!
♦ Have you come to know El Elyon?
