  1. 1. 22My Life With GodThe Fourth and Fifth Commandment
  2. 2. INTRODUCTIONJoe has a curfew of 10 PM. He obeys, but pouts and complains. Joes dad always speeds on the way to work and has several tickets and complains everychance he gets about the cops. Joes little sister does everything she needs to for Sunday School, but she tells her mom how much she hates doing it. Joe is nice in public, but tells his little sister that hehates her and makes fun of her in private. Each obeys what is required of them, but they do it reluctantly. Are they breaking commandments or not?
  3. 3. THE FOURTH COMMANDMENT Honor your father and mother, that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth. What does this mean?We should fear and love God that we do notdishonor or anger our parents and others inauthority, but honor, serve and obey themand give them love and respect.
  4. 4. STUDYING GOD’S WORD Who are the people whomGod places in authority over us?
  5. 5. Ephesians 6:1- 2 1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 “Honor yourfather and mother”—which is the first commandment with a promise—
  6. 6. God gives parents or legal guardiansauthority over me. Who are your parents? They are the ones that take care of you, feed you, and clothe you. Often theyare the ones who gave birth to you. Even if you live with a brother or sister, grandparents or foster parents - those in charge of you are your "parents".
  7. 7. Hebrews 13:7,177 Remember your leaders, who spoke theword of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith.17 Obey your leaders and submit to their authority. They keep watch over you as men who must give an account. Obeythem so that their work will be a joy, not aburden, for that would be of no advantage to you.
  8. 8. God gives people in church authorityover me. People hold many different offices in the church. Some of them are pastors, ay school or Sunday School teachers, elders, circuit pastors, etc. While humans serve inthese positions, they are put there by God.
  9. 9. 1 Peter 2:13-14 13 Submit yourselves for the Lord‟s sake to every authority instituted among men: whether to the king, as the supremeauthority, 14 or to governors, who are sentby him to punish those who do wrong and to commend those who do right.
  10. 10. God gives people in government authority over me. There are many levels of government:local, national, police, army, fire fighters - even public schools and those teachers. No matter who the government requiresme to obey, God has placed that authority over me.
  11. 11. God places people in authority over me in the home, my church, and my government.
  12. 12. GOD’S WORD IN MY LIFE Agree or disagree and why?Parents that dont let their kids date untilthey are at least 15 are too old fashion. Agree or disagree and why?George said, "I think its stupid that thegovernment says I have to wear a seatbelt in my car, so Im not going to do it."
  13. 13. STUDYING GOD’S WORDHow does God bless us through those he places over us?
  14. 14. 2 Timothy 4:16 At my first defense, no one came to mysupport, but everyone deserted me. May it not be held against them.
  15. 15. God places people in authority over me in the church to teach me his saving word. (care of my soul). There are many waysthat the people at church care for your soul. Give an extensive list of how your church serves Christians from cradle to grave. Imagine that you were in a country like China or Iran. There would be no churchand no people to feed you with Gods Word. You would be all alone without any help or guidance.
  16. 16. Romans 13:3 For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one inauthority? Then do what is right and he will commend you.
  17. 17. God places people over me in thegovernment to keep law and order. (care of my body). There are countless ways that the government cares for your body: (becreative in your list) - imagine if there wereno police, no fire department, no judges, no public schools. God cares for our bodies through the government.
  18. 18. 1 Timothy 5:8 If anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for his immediatefamily, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.
  19. 19. God places people over my body and soul. At this point in your life, you owe virtually everything to those who God has chosen to be placed over you in your home. Just think about all that they provide for your body. (list) Mostimportant of all, they also tell you aboutyour savior Jesus and provide ways foryou to grow in that knowledge. Imagine you didnt have a home for a moment - no food, no shelter - appreciate your blessings.
  20. 20. God places these people over me toprovide many wonderful blessings both for my body and my soul.
  21. 21. God wants us to obey all of His commands. If our parents or someone else in authority tells us to break a commandment, how would God have us respond?Acts 5:29 - We must obey God rather thanmen! How does this passage help you in your decision?
  22. 22. THE FIFTH COMMANDMENT You shall not murder. What does this mean?We should fear and love God that we do not hurt or harm our neighbor in his body, but help and befriend to them in every bodily need.
  23. 23. STUDYING GOD’S WORDWhy is life so precious and who alone has the right to end life?
  24. 24. Genesis 2:7the LORD God formed the man from thedust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.
  25. 25. Life is a precious gift of God. If the president of the US was to give you aRolex, you would be proud of it, treat it with care so that it is not stolen or broken. You do it because it is expensive and becauseof the important person who gave it - so too with life.
  26. 26. Genesis 9:5-65 And for your lifeblood I will surely demandan accounting. I will demand an accounting from every animal. And from each man, too, I will demand an accounting forthe life of his fellow man. 6 “Whoever shedsthe blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed; for in the image of God has God made man.
  27. 27. If anyone takes a life he has to answer toGod. If I give a bike to my seven year olddaughter, you dont have the right to come and take it. I have the right to take it back, but you have no claim on my daughter‟s bike. God says, "Keep yourhands off of your neighbors life - if you do take it you will have to answer to me the giver of life."
  28. 28. Romans 13:4For he is God‟s servant to do you good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for hedoes not bear the sword for nothing. He is God‟s servant, an agent of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer.
  29. 29. God gives the government the right to take life. It‟s a sin for me to take a gun and shoot another human being. But if I am a police officer and am protecting myself and others from a person that isthreatening life, then the government has a right to end that life. Execution falls under the same category.
  30. 30. Life is so important because it is aprecious gift of God and no oneelse has a right to take it but thegovernment that God appointed.
  31. 31. CHRISTIAN VOCABULARYSuicide - self murder - taking your own lifeagainst Gods will.Murder - taking someones life whetherintentionally or by neglect - cuttingsomeones "time of grace" shortCapital Punishment - the "death penalty"- the governments right as Godsinstrument to punish those who havecommitted crimes worthy of death
  32. 32. STUDYING GODS WORDWhen do people sin against this commandment?
  33. 33. Genesis 4:2-15 2 Later she gave birth to his brother Abel. Now Abel kept flocks, and Cain worked the soil. 3 In the course of time Cain broughtsome of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the LORD. 4 But Abel brought fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. The LORD looked with favor on Abel and his offering, 5 but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast.
  34. 34. Genesis 4:2-15 6 Then the LORD said to Cain, “Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? 7 If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what isright, sin is crouching at your door; it desiresto have you, but you must master it.” 8 NowCain said to his brother Abel, “Let‟s go out to the field.” And while they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him.
  35. 35. Genesis 4:2-15 9 Then the LORD said to Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?” “I don‟t know,” he replied. “Am I my brother‟s keeper?”10 The LORD said, “What have you done?Listen! Your brother‟s blood cries out to me from the ground. 11 Now you are under a curse and driven from the ground, whichopened its mouth to receive your brother‟s blood from your hand.
  36. 36. Genesis 4:2-15 12 When you work the ground, it will no longer yield its crops for you. You will be a restless wanderer on the earth.” 13 Cain said to the LORD, “My punishment is morethan I can bear. 14 Today you are driving mefrom the land, and I will be hidden from your presence; I will be a restless wanderer onthe earth, and whoever finds me will kill me.” 15 But the LORD said to him, “Not so; if anyone kills Cain, he will suffer vengeance seven times over.” Then the LORD put a mark on Cain so that no one who found him would kill him.
  37. 37. By taking another person‟s life. There are many ways that people carry out murder. Sometimes on purpose, sometimes by accident andsometimes they even hire others to kill for them. Sometimes people want to have a doctor kill an elderly parent orspouse or someone suffering. This is called "mercy killing", but it is still murder.
  38. 38. Matthew 27:5 So Judas threw the money into thetemple and left. Then he went away and hanged himself.
  39. 39. By taking your own life (suicide). There is a doctor in Michigan known as doctor death. If a person has a medical disorder and would like to leave this world in a painless manner, the doctor will aid in a suicide. When we commit suicide, we tell God thatour life is not precious and we are in control rather than God. We may leave this lifeeasy enough, but there will be hell to pay inthe next because we die by willfully sinning against God.
  40. 40. ASSIGNMENT FOR NEXT TIMEREVIEWING THE LESSON1. Review your notes; be sure you understand them. Be prepared for a written or oral quiz. Don‟t forget about the vocabulary words!PREPARING FOR THE NEXT LESSONAsk your parents to help you with the following activity:1. Complete the Bible History Worksheet.2. Journal Entry: Pretend you are married and have three kids. In 40-60 words explain how you would raise your children to honor those in authority over them.Time with the CommandmentsMemorize the Fourth and Fifth Commandments along with the "What does thismean?"
  41. 41. 23 My Life With GodThe Sixth Commandment
  42. 42. INTRODUCTIONMovies, TV shows and music are rated forcontent. Why? What does PG -13 usually mean? What does R mean? What does XXX mean? Why do think things that areput out there for viewing or purchase need to be rated? If you told your parents you were going to an R rated movie orpurchasing a "parental warning" CD, whatdo think they would say? Is that telling you something about our society and its obsessions with what sells!
  43. 43. THE SIXTH COMMANDMENT You shall not commit adultery. What does this mean?We should fear and love God that we do notthat we lead a pure and decent life in wordsand actions, and that husband and wife love and honor each other.
  44. 44. STUDYING GOD’S WORDHow did marriage start and what does God want marriage to be?
  45. 45. Genesis 2:21-2421 So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he wassleeping, he took one of the man‟s ribs and closed up the place with flesh. 22 Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man. 23 The man said, “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called „woman,‟ for shewas taken out of man.” 24 For this reason aman will leave his father and mother and beunited to his wife, and they will become one flesh.
  46. 46. Marriage started when God made Eve and gave her to Adam. A so-called "marriageexpert" said that "Marriage developed from a desire of Neanderthal men wanting tohave someone take care of their home for them as they went hunting." Therefore there is no need to stay married forlife, rules change. The expert is no expert at all. She doesnt even know wheremarriage came from or Gods intent in this union.
  47. 47. Matthew 19:5-6 5 and said, „For this reason a man willleave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh‟? 6 So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate.”
  48. 48. God intended marriage to be the union of one man and one woman. If the Milton Bradley Company asked you to create a game, you would have the right to make the rules so that the game is played theway that it is supposed to be played. God created marriage, and he set the guidelines so people would be happy inmarriage. He says only one man and one woman are to participate in a marriage. Any variation thereof is sinful.
  49. 49. God started marriage with Adam andEve and he intended it to be the union of one man and one woman for life.
  50. 50. GOD’S WORD IN MY LIFE Agree or disagree and why? If twomen or two women really love each otherand will be faithful through life, we shouldaccept it as a true marriage.
  51. 51. STUDYING GOD’S WORDHow do married people ruin Gods gift of marriage?
  52. 52. Colossians 3:19Husbands, love your wives and do not be harsh with them.
  53. 53. By treating each other badly instead of aloving companion. If you spent hours upon hours of completing a huge, elaboratepainting, you would be excited about it andwant to show it to someone you loved. How would you feel if instead of praising your work, that person pointed out all of yourmistakes instead of looking at all the good. So too in a relationship - rejoice in good, dont point out bad.
  54. 54. Matthew 19:9 I tell you that anyone who divorces hiswife, except for marital unfaithfulness, andmarries another woman commits adultery.”
  55. 55. Getting a divorce for reasons other than unfaithfulness or desertion. Some people argue that if you are unhappy in a marriage, its better to get a divorce than tobe unhappy. Some even say that if you findanother person who is more to your liking to"go for it." This is totally ungodly and shows that you have no commitment or love for God who is pleased when we love our spouse as ourselves.
  56. 56. 1 Corinthians7:1515 But if the unbeliever leaves, let himdo so. A believing man or woman is notbound in such circumstances; God has called us to live in peace.
  57. 57. Married people break this commandmentwhen they are harsh with each other, commit adultery or desert their spouse.
  58. 58. STUDYING GOD’S WORDHow can someone who is unmarried break this commandment?
  59. 59. Ephesians 5:3-43 But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God‟s holy people. 4 Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving.
  60. 60. We should not even give the impression of sexual immorality. A man and awoman are getting ready to get married and decide to live together. They say that they are not sleeping together. Isthis a God pleasing situation? Why or why not?
  61. 61. Matthew 5:28But I tell you that anyone who looks at awoman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
  62. 62. God wants our thoughts to be pure. A manreasons that looking at pornography on the internet isnt bad because he isnt hurting anybody. A woman reads magazines thatshow men in underwear and tells all about 10 ways to make the guys go wild aboutyou and notice. God wants our thoughts to be pure.
  63. 63. 2 Timothy 2:22 Flee the evil desires of youth, and pursuerighteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.
  64. 64. 1 Corinthians 6:18Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a man commits are outside his body, but he who sins sexually sins against his own body.
  65. 65. God wants us to avoid people and places and everything else that tempts us to sin against this commandment. In order tomake a jug of water red, all you need is onedrop of red food coloring. In order to makea persons whole being pure. Dont look at sexually explicit materials. Dont listen to coarse jokes and music. Dont sexually defile your body in any way.
  66. 66. We break this commandment when we give into sexual thoughts, actions andassociate ourselves with bad company .
  67. 67. GODS STANDARDS1. Avoid all temptation to sexual sin.2. Be clean in what we think and say about sex.3. Use your sexuality in ways that are pleasing to Him.
  68. 68. CHRISTIAN VOCABULARYAdultery - sexual intercourse with someoneother than the person to whom one ismarried; impure words or thoughts inrespect to sexual matters.Sensuality - allowing oneself to have sinfulbodily pleasure.Divorce - to end a marriage officially in acourt of law.Sexual Immorality - acting contrary toGods moral law; a sexual sin with our body
  69. 69. 1 Corinthians 3:18Do not deceive yourselves. If any one of you thinks he is wise by the standards of this age, he should become a “fool” so that he may become wise.
  70. 70. What is this age? Concerning sex and sexuality, do thestandards of "this age" often match Godsrequirements noted above? How are theyalike or different:1. In the movies and on television or theinternet?2. In school?
  71. 71. 3. How are these ideas deceitful?4. What is Gods idea of "safe sex"?
  72. 72. GODS WORD IN MY LIFEEvaluate: Melissa said, "Ill dress theway that I want to. If guys gawk and lustafter me, its their own fault."Agree or disagree and why? Goddoesnt want us to talk about or thinkabout sex.Evaluate: Jeannie said, "The best gift Ican give my husband on my weddingnight is my virginity."
