The Battle of Angamos took place on October 8, 1879 between the Peruvian ironclad Huáscar commanded by Miguel Grau and the Chilean squadron formed of the ships Cochrane, Blanco Encalada and Covadonga commanded by Galvarino Riveros. It was the last naval battle of the War of the Pacific (1879-1883). The Peruvian ships were navigating from south to north in the early morning when they spotted Chilean ships and turned northeast, but later saw three more enemy ships. The Battle of Angamos marked the end of the maritime phase of the War of the Pacific, after which the Chilean fleet controlled Peruvian waters and a month later
