5. HI STO RY / / / The company was established in 1989
in the Old Town of Fredrikstad, a one man show
gradually developed to 7 people, and in 1997 after
rebuilding all stables in the backyard to workshops
and all lofts to design offices, we had to realise
t hat we had gr own out of t he building, which gave
us no more room for expansion and we had to look
for more space, we found a 7 decare field in the
woods 8 km from the centre of Fredrikstad and in
1998 we made the transition and moved into the
new buildings.

11. LEAN PRO CESS / / / The development of a new
pr oduct is a linear pr ocess, but r at her t han being one
cont inuous line wit h sever al st ops or m ilest ones,
it is a linear process with several parallel lines,

13. CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT /// By hand sketches,
hand made models, computer renderings, 3D modeling
software and photo realistic models, we are able to
visually present concept ideas of alternative solutions
for the coming products adapted to the clients
individual needs for making the correct decision.
The concept phase is the most important stage of the
development process where guidelines of materials,
production processes, suppliers, logistics, volume
brackets and product cost is nailed out.
MODEL SHOP /// The model shop has a main role
in our development process. By testing the ideas
and solutions in real time with working prototypes,
C on cept Development top finish dummies and styling models, the product
can be simulated a long time before being launched
tnempoleveD tpecnoC at the market. We always use models active in
our development process to present early stage
functionality and design. Beautiful and interesting 3D
shapes can only be verified through real hard objects
for the right touch and feel.
14.
15. KOENIGSEGG DESIGN TEAM/// By joining forces
between the Eker Group Companies we can provide a
complete solution from a technology concept idea to
a complete first class show model for a car show as
the Geneva Salon.
We cover the complete process from sketches, Class A
surface modelling, CNC programming, model platform
build, CNC machining, Finishing and painting, detailing
and assembling. All done in a handful of weeks.
HANDCRAFTERS/DESIGNERS/ENGINEERS/
CUSTOMER/// – we all work extremely close together
to bring up new technology and techniques to give
Model Development the audience the best possible result. We force tight
cooperation to get the best possible feedback to the
tnempoleveD ledoM desicion makers while evaluating life or death of the
coming product.
16.
17. 3D ENGINEERING /// By using 3D engineering software
as our main engineering tool, we have gained unvalued
experience in how to use the right tool for the right task.
By having different 3D software tools we can choose the
best for each project in regards to tolerances, advance
surface capabilities, production tool engineering and
production documentation.
Our highly qualified engineers manoeuvres the different
3D software with great speed and elegance, making us
able to design and construct at high speed, while getting
fast and precise results. The 3D engineering software
enable us to have complete control of all the parts in
the product assembly, and we focus on utilizing 100%
of our heavily invested software’s functionality to reach
3D E ngineering our targets. Our aim is always to be faster and more
accurate in the product development process.

CAD SIMULATION /// The use of software simulation
can sort out problems and critical areas, early in the
development-phase. Mold flow analysis and strength
analysis on parts to be molded helps us in the part
design and material choices.
Mechanical Analysis Software: - Ansys designspace

18.
19. THERMAL ENGINEERING /// Already in the early stages of
product design thermal issues are addressed and advanced
engineering solutions brought to the design table. A prototype
has no value unless one can learn something, and apply
that knowledge quickly into the engineering phase. We
run our own thermal lab in which we conduct development
and testing concerning heat-flow and noise. To be able to
create the worlds smallest and most high-tech projectors we
must fit all components tightly together. At the same time
all components must perform their best. This can only be
obtained through continuously development and testing.
SOLUTIONS /// Choosing the right cooling solution is a
complex task requiring the coordination of several factors
and good thermal engineering. Thermal engineering is
Th ermal E ngineering more than a way of controlling heat and temperature rises
in a product. Thermal engineering requires designers
gnireenignE lamrehT to pay attention to every aspect of heat generation and
removal in an electronic- and optical system. It is the
careful selection of parts, materials, components and
design with heat removal in mind. An ideal cooling design
achieves the desired temperatures, is compact in size, low
in cost, and adaptable enough to fit into the product.
THERMAL SIMULATION /// Physical mock-ups and functional
testing go in parallel with simulation software like “EDF
Flotherm” in order to achieve analytic and on-hands test
results. This gives the best approximation to the success of
the end product. The simulation software gives the theoretical
values of airspeed, cooling vectors, dissipated effect, effect
removal and efficiency while the functional mock-up testing
validates the results.
20.
21. PROTOTYPING /// High speed in the development process
is a must, and we are constantly looking for new machines
and techniques to help us further speed up the process, we
know the importance of prototypes, as essential tools in the
engineering phase, and we are able to make all sorts of
prototypes, test samples and working samples, before the
start up of production tools, molds, fixtures, electronics and
optics. These prototypes are used for environmental tests,
approvals, market entrance and end user tests to ensure
our customers high quality products. We also do mechanical
tests, drop tests and repeatability tests to ensure the
mechanical quality of the different parts and products.
3D PRINTING /// To get quick results from our 3D files,
we use a FDM machine, which makes it possible for us to
Prototyping build functional prototypes in different high performance
engineering materials (ABS / PC / PPSF). We can do
gnipytotorP physical tests in an early stage to prove that we’re on
the right track, and sort out errors, which is both time and
cost effective! The FDM models are used to test impact
strength and resistance against corrosive agents, while
the PPSF material is heat resistant up to 200°C and is
used to make High-heat prototypes like lamp holding
devices for our projectors.
VACUUM CASTING /// The MCP machine allows us to
make small series of functional prototypes faster than
ever. Using this technology and our pre-production
facilities, we can speed-up the testing phase of a new
product, allowing tests and design modifications on the
product to continue in concurrence with the final tool
making and production set-up.
22.
23. CNC MACHINING /// Being first can make the difference
between success and failure. Having realized the
importance of cutting down on pre-production time,
we at Eker Design take all the newest technological
advances in use in the production of prototypes. This
includes a 3D high resolution scanner, high tolerance
CMM measuring machine, and high speed CNC milling
centre in combination with the latest high-end computer
software. These elements are also contributors to obtain
parts for smooth and cost effective mass production.
By having the in house CNC capabilities, we can use
the advantage of testing the 3D solutions in “real wood”.
Checking functions and surfaces can only be done by
real objects and the CNC machines delivers us the real
CNC Machining thing as quick as it gets.
gninihcaM CNC CNC Machines: - Deckel Mao DMU 60T - 5 axis
- Zimmermann FZ155 - 4 1/2 axis
PLUGS MOLDS AND FIXTURES /// Plugs and molds for
low volume parts in materials such as carbon fibre, glass
fibre, vacuum formed plastics etc. can be manufactured
directly out of our machine centre with no time waisted.
Fixtures needed for the production processes can easily
be manufactured and assembled in parallel with the rest
of the development process.
24.
25. CMM SCANNING CENTRE /// By using our 3D scanning
equipment we can transform the parts-design from real
world parts back into workable 3D CAD data; also called
“reversed engineering”. This system is useful when
production parts, which originally hasn’t been designed
in 3D already exists – or when scanning 1:1 scale models
or prototypes – going from mock-ups direct to production
tool manufacturing. The system is capable to scan large
size products, such as cars, boats, trains, airplanes etc.
By combining craftsmanship and scanning technology we
are able to obtain the wanted shape and convert it into
3D-files for engineering and product development. By
using CAD Compare we can easily compare the physical
model against the 3D model and find deviations on
CMM complex geometry that is usually impossible to measure.
MMC CMM MEASURING CENTRE /// Keeping full control of
the tolerances is a must when designing high technology
products. At Eker Design we are able to control all
dimensions of all parts during the development phase and
use this knowledge right through to the mass production
phase. This allows us to develop products with high output
performance.

- Laser Scanner
- 3D Tol Win

26.
27. LEAN PRODUCTION /// To be able to have a lean
production, saving both time and cost we involve
ourselves directly at the production site. To achieve the
best results being “lean” in the production phase, our
minds are set already at the very beginning of the design
and construction of the product. Low amount of parts
and both easy & safe assembly methods are two of our
leads in this mindset process.
PRE-PRODUCTION /// Since our minds are set all the
way to the production line, we have great knowledge of
the products assembly methods. We do pre-production of
the first assembled units, managing all file revisions and
Lean P roduction improvements, and at the same time teach the production
personnel, preparing each worker for the tasks of mass-
noitcudorP naeL production. This pre-production process also includes
setting ut the production line, and making fixtures and
jigs for easy & safe mass-production assembly.
28.
29. DOCUMENTATION /// The documentation is the juridical
and practical bonding between the client and owner of the
product, and their future suppliers. The documentation has
to be precise in regards of geometry, tolerances, surface
finish and cosmetic quality. Usually, the documentation
material is the core documentation used in the transfer
process between the development dept. and the operation
dept. Technical documentation for Suppliers, Production-
Sites, Service etc. is very important for the product, both
for production and sale.
We develop several types of documentation:
1. Technical Spec’s: 2D drawings of each part with
detailed information about tolerances and materials,
revisions, etc.
Documentation 2. Exploded Assembly: 2D drawings in Exploded state
for a total view of the assembly included part numbering
noitatnemucoD and details.
3. Exploded Service: Sub-Assembly 2D drawings in
Exploded state to help service-people finding spare
parts and part-numbers.
4. User guides / Service guides: Which explains how to
use and how to service the product.
5. Production guides: Which explains for production how
to assemble the product.
WORK INSTRUCTIONS /// Developing proper and
accurate work instructions secures the transfer process
between development and operations. Together with
a proper line step target of hours and delivery time -
it fulfils the necessary tools to obtain a lean way of
manufacturing the product.
30.
31. TESTING /// In the product development product testing
it is important to get the final product-approval. We
communicate directly with testing institutes around the
world from an early stage in the development process
until the very end. To save time at testing institutes
we build fixtures and do strength-tests, impact tests,
vibration tests and cycle-tests at our own site. Recently
we’ve added an highly advanced pressurized climate
chamber to our machinery equipment.
