Libraries around the world have a long tradition of maintaining authority files to assure the consistent presentation and indexing of names. As library authority files have become available online, the authority data has become accessible -- and many have been published as Linked Open Data (LOD) -- but names in one library authority file typically had no link to corresponding records for persons and organizations in other library authority files. After a successful experiment in matching the Library of Congress/NACO authority file with the German National Library's authority file, an online system called the Virtual International Authority File was developed to facilitate sharing by ingesting, matching, and displaying the relations between records in multiple authority files.
The Virtual International Authority File (VIAF) has grown from three source files in 2007 to more than two dozen files today. The system harvests authority records, enhances them with bibliographic information and brings them together into clusters when it is confident the records describe the same identity. Although the most visible part of VIAF is a HTML interface, the API beneath it supports a linked data view of VIAF with URIs representing the identities themselves, not just URIs for the clusters. It supports names for person, corporations, geographic entities, works, and expressions. With English, French, German, Spanish interfaces (and a Japanese in process), the system is used around the world, with over a million queries per day.

Thomas Hickey is Chief Scientist at OCLC where he helped found OCLC Research. Current interests include metadata creation and editing systems, authority control, parallel systems for bibliographic processing, and information retrieval and display. In addition to implementing VIAF, his group looks into exploring Web access to metadata, identification of FRBR works and expressions in WorldCat, the algorithmic creation of authorities, and the characterization of collections. User surveys of researchers and archivists realized at the EHRI project show that historians often find a significant amount of their archival sources not through finding aids, catalogs and research guides (online or not) but by talking directly to archivists.
In the case of very dispersed archival sources, an additional problem for researchers is to find the archival institution that can help them find useful material. That motivated the EHRI project to integrate an automatic helpdesk in the portal as a partial solution for this problem. This helpdesk should be able to interpret the user needs and compute the relevance of institutions to give help.
Information Extraction on Noisy Texts for Historical Research
This document summarizes an experiment on extracting named entities from historical documents using natural language processing tools. The experiment tested four tools - Alchemy API, OpenCalais, Apache OpenNLP, and Stanford NER - on extracting persons, locations, and organizations from two datasets of historical documents with around 90% OCR accuracy. Stanford NER performed best overall, while Alchemy API did best on organization extraction. Personal names, locations used as other entities, abbreviations, and spelling errors posed challenges. Combining tools and integrating additional knowledge may improve performance for named entity extraction on this type of historical text.

In this lecture I present an experiment comparing the efficacy of several Named Entity Extraction (NEE) tools at extracting entities directly from the output of an optical character recognition (OCR) workflow. The presentation will discuss the creation of a set of test data consisting of raw and manually corrected OCR output, comparing the precision and recall in the extraction of entities of type PERSON, LOCATION and ORGANIZATION against the manually annotated test data.
Active Annotation of Corpora.
Active annotation is a technique that uses active learning to speed up the annotation of corpora. It was used to annotate the LUNA corpus of dialogues. The algorithm starts with a small randomly annotated set to train an initial model. It then automatically annotates the remaining data, prioritizes examples by confidence, and has humans review the lowest confidence examples. This allows the model to iteratively learn from human feedback. Evaluation showed annotation time decreased and error rates improved with each iteration, demonstrating the effectiveness of active annotation for assisting and improving human annotation of large corpora.
Resources for linguistically motivated Multilingual Anaphora Resolution
This document outlines Kepa Joseba Rodríguez's dissertation on developing resources for linguistically motivated multilingual anaphora resolution. It proposes a new annotation scheme that addresses limitations of previous schemes by annotating all noun phrases, distinguishing referring and non-referring expressions, and capturing ambiguity and discontinuous references. The scheme was used to manually annotate English and Italian corpora containing newspaper articles, dialogues, Wikipedia pages, and blogs totaling over 400,000 words. The annotated data aims to provide features for developing improved anaphora resolution systems in multiple languages.

End-to-end pipeline agility - Berlin Buzzwords 2024
We describe how we achieve high change agility in data engineering by eliminating the fear of breaking downstream data pipelines through end-to-end pipeline testing, and by using schema metaprogramming to safely eliminate boilerplate involved in changes that affect whole pipelines.
A quick poll on agility in changing pipelines from end to end indicated a huge span in capabilities. For the question "How long time does it take for all downstream pipelines to be adapted to an upstream change," the median response was 6 months, but some respondents could do it in less than a day. When quantitative data engineering differences between the best and worst are measured, the span is often 100x-1000x, sometimes even more.
A long time ago, we suffered at Spotify from fear of changing pipelines due to not knowing what the impact might be downstream. We made plans for a technical solution to test pipelines end-to-end to mitigate that fear, but the effort failed for cultural reasons. We eventually solved this challenge, but in a different context. In this presentation we will describe how we test full pipelines effectively by manipulating workflow orchestration, which enables us to make changes in pipelines without fear of breaking downstream.
Making schema changes that affect many jobs also involves a lot of toil and boilerplate. Using schema-on-read mitigates some of it, but has drawbacks since it makes it more difficult to detect errors early. We will describe how we have rejected this tradeoff by applying schema metaprogramming, eliminating boilerplate but keeping the protection of static typing, thereby further improving agility to quickly modify data pipelines without fear.
