Kent State University's Cleveland Urban Design Collaborative led a graduate studio focused on the redevelopment of Havana's Nico-Lopez Oil Refinery. Based on information gathered during a one-week visit to Cuba, students generated a holistic vision to transform the 500 acre brownfield site into a viable harbor-front neighborhood. The range of urban design proposals include a public transit corridor, ferry terminal, urban agriculture farm, flood mitigation landscape. public park network, and wastewater biofiltration infrastructure.

The City of Tarpon Springs seeks to revitalize its downtown core areas and encourage redevelopment for a vibrant, thriving, destination with a wide range of travel options. The principal ways proving access to the City's urban neighborhoods are constrained and cannot be widened to meet existing or future demand generated by redevelopment. In addition, existing future land use and zoning regulations are out of touch with the area's traditional urban form.
We present a case study of how Racine, Wis., a coastal city, is using its formerly industrial riverfront as a lynchpin for an ambitious revitalization project that marries the goals of economic redevelopment, environmental improvement, and bringing the public back to the water. This presentation was given by Helen Sarakinos, Policy Program Director, River Alliance of Wisconsin.

Fairplex is starting to reinvent itself. Quaint stores, large open-air plazas, shaded walkways, and a public park.
The Fairplex Park is a mixed-use development with an assortment of interesting stores, retail shops, restaurants, mixed-income housing, neighborhood-serving amenities, some offices, along with a public park. Trees line the walkways and street plazas. People sit down for meals with tables shaded with umbrellas. Others prefer to stroll across the parkways. Customized to the Fairplex community, The Fairplex Park promises to create a pedestrian-friendly mixed-used environment that provides a more meaningful social, leisure and shopping experience and allows a greater opportunity for interaction among families, visitors, and neighbors.

2. EGYPT PROTEST : Friday, january 28th « Day of Rage » Rubber bullets, water cannons: Violent clashes erupt in Cairo Police armed with batons beat pro-democracy leader ElBaradei's supporters The Egyptian capital Cairo was the scene of violent chaos Friday january 28th, when tens of thousands of anti-government protesters stoned and confronted police, who fired back with rubber bullets, tear gas and water cannons. It was a major escalation in what was already the biggest challenge to authoritarian President Hosni Mubarak's 30 year-rule. Police also fired water cannons at one of the country's leading pro-democracy advocates, Mohamed ElBaradei, the Egyptian Nobel laureate and opposition leader, and his supporters as they joined the latest wave of protests after noon prayers. Police used batons to beat some of ElBaradei's supporters, who surrounded him to protect him. A soaking wet ElBaradei was trapped inside a mosque while hundreds of riot police laid siege to it, firing tear gas in the streets around so no one could leave. The tear gas canisters set several cars ablaze outside the mosque and several people fainted and suffered burns. Large groups of protesters, in the thousands, were gathered at at least six venues in Cairo, a city of about 18 million people, and many of them were on the move marching toward major squares and across Nile bridges. They are demanding Mubarak's ouster and venting their rage at years of government neglect of rampant poverty, unemployment and rising food prices. Today january 28th, the Egyptian government has shut down all internet access and text messaging service to try and prevent people from finding out about the protests. And to stop people from finding out about the police brutality which has been going on for decades, as can be read in the Wikileaks Egypt Cables released today « WikiLeaks: Mubarak lets Egyptians suffer to avoid 'chaos' « Here : http://wikileaks.ch/reldate/2011-01-28_0.html Today also 4 french journalists were arrested in Cairo The situation became today harder and show a rare violence against the population ATTENTION : SOME PICTURES CAN HURT
