Penthesilea was the queen of the Amazons, the daughter of Ares and Otrera. She accidentally killed her sister Hippolyta while hunting, which caused her great grief. She joined the Trojan War to prove the Amazons' strength in battle and appease the gods. Penthesilea arrived in Troy with 12 companions and promised to kill Achilles. She defeated many Greeks in battle, including Telamonian Ajax. However, Achilles ultimately killed Penthesilea in combat, though he fell in love with her upon seeing her beauty.
