This study aims to evaluate the effects of two periodontal treatment strategies on endothelial function and cardiovascular disease biomarkers in subjects with chronic periodontitis. In a randomized clinical trial, 98 subjects will receive either scaling and root planing plus local chlorhexidine (treatment group) or scaling and root planing alone (control group). The primary outcome is flow-mediated dilatation of the brachial artery, measured at baseline and 24 hours and 3 months after treatment. Secondary outcomes include levels of C-reactive protein, blood lipids, glucose, and other inflammation markers. The results of this trial may provide evidence on how periodontal treatment impacts surrogate markers of cardiovascular risk.
