Summary
02
Why?
03
How?
When you lead a team, negative feedback is like a brake and positive is like gas
Kim Scott, Radical Candor
01 Definition
We build advanced Web Platforms fueling businesses' growth
Feedback is information about actions returned to the
source of the actions.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feedback_(disambiguation)
Feedback occurs when outputs of a system are routed
back as inputs as part of a chain of cause-and-effect
that forms a circuit or loop
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feedback
01 Definition / Examples of feedback
We build advanced Web Platforms fueling businesses' growth
● checking account balance
● reprimand for being late for an appointment
● receiving a bonus for sales results
● red errors on the test
01 Definition / Feedback loop
We build advanced Web Platforms fueling businesses' growth
The feedback loop is created,
when the level change of one of
the resources affects flows that
change the level of it the
resource itself.
01 Definition / Examples of feedback loops
We build advanced Web Platforms fueling businesses' growth
● furnace thermostat in response
to temperature changes
● increasing the account balance
by the value of interest
● daily standup
01 Definition / Positive & negative feedback
We build advanced Web Platforms fueling businesses' growth
Positive feedback is one that reinforces
direction of changes in the system
● increasing interest on the account
● receiving a bonus for sales results
Negative feedback is one that limits or
reverses the direction of changes in the system
● the body regulates sugar levels
● the thermostat regulates the temperature
level
02 Why
We build advanced Web Platforms fueling businesses' growth
Why?
1. The purpose of feedback is to improve
results
2. Feedback is focused on behavior
3. Feedback is about the future
Main objective
We should only take care about effective action
in the future - not winning discussion
03 How
We build advanced Web Platforms fueling businesses' growth
Observations
precise description of behavior
Consequences
precise description of the effect of behavior
on the system
Expectations
precise description of expected changes
03 How / Observations
We build advanced Web Platforms fueling businesses' growth
Spoken words (different words produce different results)
Body language (avoiding eye contact, knocking on the forehead, covering the face)
The way we speak (tone, tempo, volume)
Work results (quality, speed, precision, quantity, punctuality)
Mimicry (smile, roll your eyes, raising eyebrows)
Written words (content of email, text, message on hut)
03 How / Assessments
We build advanced Web Platforms fueling businesses' growth
Observations vs assessments
Labeling, generalizing, diagnosis - these are
examples of assessments.
We should refer to the facts and describe
what a camera could register.
Examples of assessments:
● you are always late
● you never finish tasks
● you're a mess
● you ignored the problem
03 How / Observation or assesment?
We build advanced Web Platforms fueling businesses' growth
● You really got angry at yesterday's meeting
● I think you work too much. During the meeting with the testers, you punched the table and
said “You are amateurs!”
● You were in the office for 21 hours the last 5 days
● You are a great leader
● You look tired
● You write messy code
● Your teams have the highest retention rate in the company
● You fell asleep at the quarter planning meeting
● Andrzej and Kasia were looking for a bug in the component you wrote for 7 hours
03 How / Reactions
We build advanced Web Platforms fueling businesses' growth
Expect defensive reactions - even the best prepared feedback can generate rapid feedback
Remember the purpose of feedback - only care about effective action in the future and not winning
discussion
Don't waste energy - don’t get caught up in quarrels and debates about the past
Be patient - try not to be discouraged and repeat the same feedback many times
Use system feedback - feedback which concerns the lack of response to feedback
Come up with consequences - system feedback may be associated with serious consequences, e.g.
performance improvement plan
03 How / When
We build advanced Web Platforms fueling businesses' growth
Timing - try to give feedback as soon as possible
Not to late - if too much time has passed since the behavior that we want to change, give up feedback
Monitoring - try not give feedback under the influence of emotions.
Remember to have a good night of sleep before giving feedback!
03 How / Routines
We build advanced Web Platforms fueling businesses' growth
Examples
● I will do 1on1y every week to be able to give precise feedback
● I will create a notebook with notes and I will write examples of positive ones behavior
● I will always leave 10 minutes of free time between meetings for feedback
● I will create a channel on Slack where someone can give someone positive feedback
● I will organize a regular demo so that team members can get feedback about theirs work
● I will organize meetings with sellers to show us the reasons for loosen contracts
● I will teach my managers techniques for giving and receiving feedback
03 How / Routines at Bravelab.io
We build advanced Web Platforms fueling businesses' growth
Our examples
● Daily General & Daily Sales
● 1-on-1’s
● Surveys after dev meeting
● Evaluation Reports
● Retrospectives
● Slack channels (per project)
● Code Review
● People's comments on articles on the Blog
● Officevibe (feedback collection tool - mood testing in a company)
● Quick problem solving, short telco conversations, etc.
03 How / Tools / Get/Need VS Don’t Get
We build advanced Web Platforms fueling businesses' growth
GET DON’T GET
NEED
DON’T
NEED
03 How / Tools / Nonviolent communication
We build advanced Web Platforms fueling businesses' growth
"When you did [X], it made me feel [Y]. In the future, I would recommend that you do [Z]."
Thank you!
