Social media can have both positive and negative effects on youth. Positively, it provides easy access to online resources for learning, increases general knowledge, and facilitates political and social movements. However, heavy social media use has been linked to lower grades, reduced work productivity, and privacy and employment issues. Extensive online engagement can also correlate with psychological disorders like depression and anxiety. While social media allows for connection and information sharing, it can be addictive and cause users to lose focus for long periods of time.

public with personal information when online. Most don't
read privacy policies and may be unaware that their
information may be used by third parties, like advertisers,
insurance companies, and the IRS.

bully someone, usually by sending intimidating or
threatening messages) is commonplace online, causes
emotional trauma, and sometimes even leads to suicide.
