Effect

Treatment System on
   Poultry Litter
     Leachate

            Feb, 2010
Need of my research….

Local poultry houses are least interested in safe
disposal of poultry waste.
                  
•odor problem,
•attraction of rodents, insects and other pests,
•release of animal pathogens,
•deterioration of biological structure of the earth
and catastrophic spills
This waste leaches down as run off
and poses threats to under ground as
well as surface water quality problem
in the vicinity.
                 
situation becomes worse when water
from these reservoirs is used for
drinking purpose by the natives
AIM OF RESEARCH:

The aim of present study was to
treat the poultry litter leachate by
integrated system of biological and
ozone treatment to evaluate the
efficiency of these treatments.
Methodology

1. Sample collection

    Leachte formation
Fabricated Leachate Making Unit
2. Biological Treatment:

Leachate was Biological treated

Activated Sludge Process (ASP)
ASP
3. Ozonation

Pre- and Post ozonation was
carried out at varied pH i.e
5,7,9 and time 18, 36, 54
respectively
Ozonator
Parameters:

•Chemical oxygen demand (COD)
•COD Abatement constant (Kcod)
•Color
•Decolorization Abatement constant (Kd)
•Total Dissolve solids (TDS)
• pH
•DO
•alkalinity
•EE/O
Results
•Both color and COD removal were increased
continuously with increasing ozonation.

•Reaction pH also influences on the performance
of the ozonation process
  color
COLOR:
•Color removal for ASP treated ozonated
sample at pH 5, 7 and 9 were 22, 12 and 53
percent respectively. An optimal color removal
was obtained at 9 pH after 54 minutes
ozonation
continued

•For 54 minutes ozonation time, the color
removal at pH 5, 7, 9 and for original pH of the
raw ozonated sample was 29, 46, 29 and 40
percent respectively. An optimal color removal
of 46 percent at pH 7 is evident at 54 minutes
ozone exposure.

ALKALINITY

A regular decrease in alkalinity was
observed during the ozonation process from
18-54 minutes for raw as well as ASP
treated ozonated sample

  Total Dissolve Solids

The increase in TDS was observed after
all the treatments
pH

The trend for pH in this study
decreases after every treatment
 DISSOLVE OXYGEN

Constant increase was Observed
Conclusions

Ozonation of raw poultry leachate
sample showed greater color removal
than COD with increasing ozonation
time. Sample pH also influenced the
performance of ozonation. In this
case, optimal pH appeared to be 9 for
COD and 7 for color.
Continued….

Post ozonation of ASP treated wastewater
resulted in color and COD removal with
 increasing ozonation bubbling time. Varied
pH influence the treatment to a great
 extend.

Maximum color and COD removal was obtained
at 54 min ozone contact time at 5, 7 and 9 pH
for raw and ASP ozonated samples.
Continued….

 Among varied pH maximum COD
and color removal was obtained at 9
pH for raw and ASP ozonated
 samples due to production of
 hydroxyl radicals at elevated pH.

Electrical energy comparison
demonstrated that Integrated
approach is more cost effective and
feasible option than AOPs alone
According to the results, it can be
concluded that integrated treatment
(biological and ozone) are more
effective in COD and color removal
than ozone alone.
RECOMMENDATIONS

Best cost effective treatment option for
poultry leachate sample is the integration of
biological and ozone rather than ozone alone.

Recommended optimum pH is 9 for
integrated treatment of poultry leachate
sample which should be kept in consideration
because above pH 9 decrease in COD and
color removal takes place
Thank you

Effect of Integrated Treatment System on Poultry Litter Leachate

  • 1.
  • 2. Effect of Integrated Treatment System on Poultry Litter Leachate SADAF LIAQUAT Feb, 2010
  • 3. Need of my research…. Local poultry houses are least interested in safe disposal of poultry waste.  •odor problem, •attraction of rodents, insects and other pests, •release of animal pathogens, •deterioration of biological structure of the earth and catastrophic spills
  • 4. This waste leaches down as run off and poses threats to under ground as well as surface water quality problem in the vicinity.  situation becomes worse when water from these reservoirs is used for drinking purpose by the natives
  • 5. AIM OF RESEARCH: The aim of present study was to treat the poultry litter leachate by integrated system of biological and ozone treatment to evaluate the efficiency of these treatments.
  • 8. 2. Biological Treatment: Leachate was Biological treated Activated Sludge Process (ASP)
  • 9. ASP
  • 10. 3. Ozonation Pre- and Post ozonation was carried out at varied pH i.e 5,7,9 and time 18, 36, 54 respectively
  • 11.
  • 13. Parameters: •Chemical oxygen demand (COD) •COD Abatement constant (Kcod) •Color •Decolorization Abatement constant (Kd) •Total Dissolve solids (TDS) • pH •DO •alkalinity •EE/O
  • 14. Results •Both color and COD removal were increased continuously with increasing ozonation. •Reaction pH also influences on the performance of the ozonation process color COLOR: •Color removal for ASP treated ozonated sample at pH 5, 7 and 9 were 22, 12 and 53 percent respectively. An optimal color removal was obtained at 9 pH after 54 minutes ozonation
  • 15. continued •For 54 minutes ozonation time, the color removal at pH 5, 7, 9 and for original pH of the raw ozonated sample was 29, 46, 29 and 40 percent respectively. An optimal color removal of 46 percent at pH 7 is evident at 54 minutes ozone exposure.

  • 17. COD •COD removal for ASP treated ozonated sample (54 minutes) at 5, 7 and 9 pH were 10, 30 and 56 percent correspondingly •For the raw ozonated sample (54 mintues) at original, 5, 7 and 9 pH was 31, 9, 4 and 8.

  • 21. ALKALINITY A regular decrease in alkalinity was observed during the ozonation process from 18-54 minutes for raw as well as ASP treated ozonated sample Total Dissolve Solids The increase in TDS was observed after all the treatments
  • 22. pH The trend for pH in this study decreases after every treatment DISSOLVE OXYGEN Constant increase was Observed
  • 23. Conclusions Ozonation of raw poultry leachate sample showed greater color removal than COD with increasing ozonation time. Sample pH also influenced the performance of ozonation. In this case, optimal pH appeared to be 9 for COD and 7 for color.
  • 24. Continued…. Post ozonation of ASP treated wastewater resulted in color and COD removal with increasing ozonation bubbling time. Varied pH influence the treatment to a great extend. Maximum color and COD removal was obtained at 54 min ozone contact time at 5, 7 and 9 pH for raw and ASP ozonated samples.
  • 25. Continued…. Among varied pH maximum COD and color removal was obtained at 9 pH for raw and ASP ozonated samples due to production of hydroxyl radicals at elevated pH. Electrical energy comparison demonstrated that Integrated approach is more cost effective and feasible option than AOPs alone
  • 26. According to the results, it can be concluded that integrated treatment (biological and ozone) are more effective in COD and color removal than ozone alone.
  • 27. RECOMMENDATIONS Best cost effective treatment option for poultry leachate sample is the integration of biological and ozone rather than ozone alone. Recommended optimum pH is 9 for integrated treatment of poultry leachate sample which should be kept in consideration because above pH 9 decrease in COD and color removal takes place
