Jahanara Trading Corporation is a leading exporter of sustainably farmed and high-quality eel fish from Bangladesh, serving customers in Japan, Hong Kong, China, and Taiwan
Shrimp plays an important economic role in Bangladesh and is the second largest export industry. Bangladesh ranks fourth in area of shrimp farming and sixth in production volume globally. Shrimp farming is concentrated in the southwest coastal districts and occurs in enclosures and ponds accessible during tidal cycles. Bangladesh exports shrimp primarily to the US, EU, Japan, and other countries, earning over $500 million annually in recent years. However, shrimp farming also faces challenges such as disease outbreaks, lack of regulations and training, and various social and environmental problems. With increasing global demand, shrimp cultivation remains a key industry for Bangladesh's economy if these issues can be properly addressed.
Aquaculture Revolution in Bangladesh.pdfSadia Nabilah
Bangladesh has one of the largest and most active deltas, nourished by the Padma, Meghna, and Jamuna rivers. This increases the potential for fresh and brackish water capture and culture fisheries. Aquaculture is the fastest-growing enterprise in Bangladesh since the 1980s.
Aquaculture production is unevenly dispersed geographically with Asian countries contributing nearly 90% of global production; where, China is the largest producer in 2018, followed by India, Indonesia, Vietnam, and Bangladesh, respectively (FAO, 2020). According to FAO report The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture 2018, Bangladesh ranked 5th in world aquaculture production. The aquaculture industry has worked out towards creating new possibilities and yet has to face some future challenges due to unwise practices and knowledge gaps.
Employment opportunities in the sector are a boon as well – official statistics show that the fisheries and aquaculture sectors (directly and indirectly) support more than 18 million people. The aquaculture sector has a high potential for the perspective on the economic development of the country.
As with any livestock industry in Bangladesh, there are a number of challenges that can impact the viability of aquaculture initiatives in future. Aquaculture can be no riskier than, say, poultry farming. We have to figure out what these challenges are and how both external and internal challenges can be managed through good project design.
Fisheries play a vital economic role in Bangladesh, contributing significantly to GDP, exports, and employment. Bangladesh has an abundance of inland and marine fisheries resources, with over 300 fish species and 20 shrimp varieties caught or farmed. The fisheries industry lacks modern processing equipment, though there are over 100 processing plants, most located in ports. Upgrading plants with new machinery for tasks like cleaning, scaling, skinning and freezing fish could improve production quality and allow Bangladesh to better meet international food safety standards for its major exports of frozen and dried fish and shrimp to European, US, and Japanese markets.
Role of Coastal & Marine aquaculture in the Blue Economic development of Bang...jubaermolla
The document discusses the role of coastal and marine aquaculture in Bangladesh's blue economy development. It outlines that coastal aquaculture includes shrimp, prawn, seaweed and oyster farming. Shrimp farming contributes significantly to exports and livelihoods. While coastal aquaculture has grown, challenges remain like habitat destruction, soil acidification, and lack of planning. However, there is potential to develop new species and sustainable systems to further contribute to the economy and food security, if issues are addressed. Coastal aquaculture plays an important role in Bangladesh's blue economy that can be expanded.
Shrimp culture has vital role for rising economic success, shaping a more prosperous and sustainable future in Bangladesh, specially in the coastal area but this sector is under threat for various problems, faced by shrimp cultivators. This paper explains the problem, faced by shrimp cultivators in the coastal area of Bangladesh and the solution of those problems with the current attitude of shrimp farmers on shrimp culture. This study has been conducted in three districts, named Bagerhat, Khulna and Shatkhira district of Bangladesh. 200 respondents have been selected randomly who have been cultivating shrimp since several years. A semi-structured questionnaire has been used, four FGDs and three case study interviews have been conducted to identify problems and solutions of those problems and a scale has been used to know their current attitude on shrimp culture. Secondary data have been collected though journal, repots and newspaper. This study has focused on problems, disrupting the shrimp culture constantly and solutions in specific areas of shrimp cultivators but the whole problem of shrimp culture hasn’t been included in this study. This study has identified that shrimp cultivators are facing problems a lot which are eroding the benefit from shrimp culture, including shrimp fry remains sick, comparatively high price of shrimp fry, virus, pollution of water, comparatively low price during they sell shrimp, the price of feed is so high, lack of proper transportation, traditional process of culture and lack of monitoring bodies etc. True, to combat these troubling situations and create new possibilities, cooperation is crucial, including- soft loan, training, NGOs’ help, and Governmental initiatives. So, the Government of Bangladesh must take cognizance and act decisively to determine the barrier of shrimp cultivators and the solution of those barriers to make a suitable place of shrimp culture which will contribute to enrich the economy of Bangladesh.

This document summarizes a project in Bangladesh that aimed to improve nutrition and increase incomes through the production and consumption of small, nutrient-rich fish species. The project worked with 1500 households with homestead ponds and 517 households managing wetlands. It led to more than doubling of fish production and incomes from ponds, and a three-fold increase in wetlands. Consumption of nutrient-rich small fish like mola increased, contributing to improved nutrition. The project demonstrated the benefits of small fish for nutrition, incomes, and disseminated the technologies to other areas.
The Caribbean Regional Fisheries Mechanism (CRFM) has identified aquaculture as a sector with potential to stimulate economic growth, jobs, and food security in member countries. However, aquaculture remains underdeveloped aside from some commercial production. CRFM has developed a five-year action plan for aquaculture development supported by a study confirming its potential economic and social contributions. The growth of aquaculture has been limited by high costs, lack of research and development, policies and legislation, and impacts of weather events. CRFM aims to promote sustainable aquaculture growth through increased investment, improved technology, support services, and policies to increase production and earnings in the region.

Fisheries and aquaculture sectors in Bangladesh: an overview of the present s...Premier Publishers
Fisheries sector in Bangladesh represents as one of the most productive and dynamic sectors in the country. This sector plays a significant role in food security, employment, and foreign exchange earnings in the economy. At present agricultural transformation is taking place in Bangladesh. With the changes of farming system, farmers have started to shift their crop land to aquaculture as they considered it more profitable compared to rice production. The production of inland fisheries represents an increasing trend since 1989-90 with a growth rate of around 5-7%. Similarly, marine fisheries have also shown an increasing trend while a fluctuated growth rate has emerged in this sub sector. The fisheries sector in the 21st century is facing the challenges of food security for the increasing population, habitat degradation, urbanization, and industrial development. Development of responsible fisheries management and optimal use of water bodies can address those challenges. Since fishery is a productive growth sector in Bangladesh, it has high potential to contribute in the socioeconomic development of the country.
Present Scenario and Problems of Aquaculture in India.pptxRajesh Chudasama
- India is the 2nd largest aquaculture producer in the world and aquaculture contributes about 74% of India's total fish production. However, the aquaculture industry faces several social, economic, technological, and environmental problems. This includes issues like high input costs, lack of financial assistance, water pollution from farms, and disease outbreaks affecting production. While India has vast aquaculture resources like ponds, rivers, and reservoirs, current production levels remain low due to these challenges. There is potential to further develop the industry by addressing these problems and utilizing new technologies and schemes under government programs.
Krishna presented on the topic of aquaculture and its role in rural development. Some key points include: (1) Aquaculture is the fastest growing food sector and produced over 90 million tonnes globally in 2012, helping to meet the world's increasing demand for protein; (2) Aquaculture plays an important role in rural development by generating employment, utilizing waste, developing infrastructure, and empowering small farmers; (3) Aquaculture also improves nutrition and food security by providing affordable protein to poor communities through small backyard ponds and fish farming.
This document discusses the use of biotechnologies in post-harvest handling and management in the fishery sector. It notes that annual fish production in Africa is over 7 million tons but that post-harvest losses range from 20-25% due to spoilage. One way to reduce losses is through fermentation, which is an old processing method and most abundant source of animal protein worldwide. The document then examines the fermentation process for fish in Africa, including with salting and drying, with salting but without drying, and provides examples of fermented fish products and their storage periods. Benefits of fermented fish include long storage periods of 6 months to 2 years, high protein content, engaging more people, and being profitable.
The term “sustainability” or also “sustainable development”, often used as nothing more than a catch-phrase, has much more to offer. It is a concept to guarantee a livable environment for all people in the long term, encompassing at least three fundamental components of sustainable development, preservation of a functional environment, economic welfare and social equity. Accordingly, also in the field of aquaculture, aiming for sustainability requires not only the achievement of environmental objectives, but also to provide clear economic advantages for aquaculture farmers in the long term. However, the term “sustainability” is often diluted and weakened , being used by politicians, entrepreneurs and the public, in a general way on numerous occasions, very often in a superficial or misleading way and with an incorrect definition, just to exploit the positive , connotations of the term.

Ghana has potential to increase fish production through aquaculture to meet demand. A study by Dr. Ansah and Dr. Frimpong analyzed the economic impact of adopting best management practices (BMPs) of using commercial floating fish feed in tilapia pond culture. Their research found that commercial floating feed increased fish yields by 100% compared to traditional sinking feed and increased profitability. Modeling adoption rates, they estimated the net present value of widespread BMP adoption in Ghanaian aquaculture to be US$85 million over 20 years, providing economic and social benefits to producers and consumers.
