Introductory (For Educators, Facilitators and Faculty)
** Introductory is developed through this primer so that the educators, facilitators and faculty
can convince their respective schools and college to have the series of UN SDGs awareness
and why it is relevant to have such initiative in their places.
The UN SDG # 1 aims to end poverty in all its form everywhere by 2030. Poverty does not in itself
reflect lack of income or having access to resources, it also includes lack of opportunities for
education, inequality and social discrimination. As per the UN SDGs, 22 % of the population is
below the poverty line and every one in five persons in India is poor. SDGs statistics reveal that
every year, diarrhoea kills 188,000 children under five in India and children weakened by
frequent diarrhoea episodes are more vulnerable to malnutrition, stunting, and opportunistic
infections such as pneumonia. In India, public expenditure on health as a share of the GDP
(1.41%) is lower than the world average (5.99%) and sub-Saharan Africa (2.32%). Government
has a target of increasing this to 2.5% by 2020. Institutional births rose to 79% in 2015 from 39%
in 2005. However, the doctor-to-patient ratio of 0.57 per 1000 people is lower than the Asian
developing economy average (1.2%). India is home to 1/3rd of the world’s stunted children.
38.4% of children under 5 years of age are stunted, and 21% are wasted. Malnutrition erodes the

There is growing need to bring down local issues and realities if we as a nation have to succeed in
changing from our current sustainable development status to the agenda 2030 target set.
Children, youth, adults, senior citizens, families and communities must know frame and relate
how these SDGs are relevant to and affect their daily lives, be it with regard to environment,
health and well-being, quality education, fostering peaceful communities, innovation and
infrastructure. Each one of us need to try to relate to SDGs, when this understanding happens,
people of all ages feel empowered, inspired and motivated to take individual actions, resulting in
sustained progress on the 17 goals.
Keeping this introductory as background, hope the schools and colleges in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai
and Thane plan to have awareness and workshop focusing UN SDGs and how they are relevant to
daily lives.
Best Practice for Global Goals
 Plan and create art exhibitions to express student interpretations of the Goal # 1 : no
poverty
 Create a peer to peer learning exchange programme on goal #1
 Plan an outdoor event and engage the kids in distributing food and goodies to the
underprivileged children.

Goal # 1 does not talk only about the global poor, so to say poor does not mean lack of income -
“It includes lack of opportunities for education, inequality and social discrimination
8 – 10 YearsAge Group:
1. Divide the children into uneven group – say for example: 3 in one group, 5 in another
group and 7 in another group and so on….then distribute any food item – biscuits or fruit
unevenly i.e.; do not distribute equal…tell the students this what inequality means.
2. Divide children into 4 groups and give one group more of resources say for example:
stationary, papers, colours and so o+9n…ask them to write, colour or whatever they wish
to do….the group with more resources give quality output….explain through this example
what quality education means…when you give proper resources and create opportunity
children will be able to perform better.
3. Encourage children to talk, interact on this theme in their own way and develop their
understanding.
4. Pledge for the support for No poverty SDG#1 with the placard – children, teachers and
school management (*with children showing their support by drawing star on the chart
paper)

  • 2. “Since today's youth will be the inheritors of the success or failure of the Sustainable Development Goals, their ownership and commitment to the Goals will be critical to success. For this to be so, they must be taught to embrace the 17 Goals as fundamental to their future well-being and sustainability”. Peter Thompson, President of the general assembly of the United Nations, November 2016 Introductory (For Educators, Facilitators and Faculty) ** Introductory is developed through this primer so that the educators, facilitators and faculty can convince their respective schools and college to have the series of UN SDGs awareness and why it is relevant to have such initiative in their places. The UN SDG # 1 aims to end poverty in all its form everywhere by 2030. Poverty does not in itself reflect lack of income or having access to resources, it also includes lack of opportunities for education, inequality and social discrimination. As per the UN SDGs, 22 % of the population is below the poverty line and every one in five persons in India is poor. SDGs statistics reveal that every year, diarrhoea kills 188,000 children under five in India and children weakened by frequent diarrhoea episodes are more vulnerable to malnutrition, stunting, and opportunistic infections such as pneumonia. In India, public expenditure on health as a share of the GDP (1.41%) is lower than the world average (5.99%) and sub-Saharan Africa (2.32%). Government has a target of increasing this to 2.5% by 2020. Institutional births rose to 79% in 2015 from 39% in 2005. However, the doctor-to-patient ratio of 0.57 per 1000 people is lower than the Asian developing economy average (1.2%). India is home to 1/3rd of the world’s stunted children. 38.4% of children under 5 years of age are stunted, and 21% are wasted. Malnutrition erodes the physical and mental health and wellbeing of children. Source: NFHS 4 There is growing need to bring down local issues and realities if we as a nation have to succeed in changing from our current sustainable development status to the agenda 2030 target set. Children, youth, adults, senior citizens, families and communities must know frame and relate how these SDGs are relevant to and affect their daily lives, be it with regard to environment, health and well-being, quality education, fostering peaceful communities, innovation and infrastructure. Each one of us need to try to relate to SDGs, when this understanding happens, people of all ages feel empowered, inspired and motivated to take individual actions, resulting in sustained progress on the 17 goals. Keeping this introductory as background, hope the schools and colleges in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and Thane plan to have awareness and workshop focusing UN SDGs and how they are relevant to daily lives.

Best Practice for Global Goals  Plan and create art exhibitions to express student interpretations of the Goal # 1 : no poverty  Create a peer to peer learning exchange programme on goal #1  Plan an outdoor event and engage the kids in distributing food and goodies to the underprivileged children. “The idea that some lives matter less is the root of all that is wrong with the World” – Dr. Paul Farmer No povertyFocus: Global CitizenshipCategory: Goal # 1 does not talk only about the global poor, so to say poor does not mean lack of income - “It includes lack of opportunities for education, inequality and social discrimination 8 – 10 YearsAge Group: 1. Divide the children into uneven group – say for example: 3 in one group, 5 in another group and 7 in another group and so on….then distribute any food item – biscuits or fruit unevenly i.e.; do not distribute equal…tell the students this what inequality means. 2. Divide children into 4 groups and give one group more of resources say for example: stationary, papers, colours and so o+9n…ask them to write, colour or whatever they wish to do….the group with more resources give quality output….explain through this example what quality education means…when you give proper resources and create opportunity children will be able to perform better. 3. Encourage children to talk, interact on this theme in their own way and develop their understanding. 4.
