EDUCATION 3A (Assignment 1) GENERAL FEEDBACK:
CODES:
A = Argument not clearly stated/justified/made
C = Coherency in writing/arguing lacking
CE = Critical engagement with the authors’ views lacking
E = Example/educational practice not clear, as it does not
clarify/illustrate argument/main point
G = Good piece of work
M = Motivation/reasoning is not clear or convincing
O = Own voice/argument not clearly presented/lacking
Q = Question is not answered (read specific question
posed)
R = Relate these views to the specific question
Ref = Reference(s) required/needs attention
S = Structure of academic essay needs attention
SA = Self-assessment not included
T = Text requires attention (editing/language/spelling etc)
U = Understanding: Walker/Halstead not evident /correct
V = Violation/non-violation not adequately addressed
W = Tell me why you claim/argue/state/say this (needs
substantiation or justification of argument)
Additional general comments:
You must answer the specific assignment question: You
had to argue whether one/some/all of the comm.
principles (Walker) violates/do not violate the lib values
(Halstead) and provide reasons for your claim.
The arguments should be based on Walker’s comm.
principles (as listed in the question) and NOT on his view
of Self-determination
Your arguments must be based on Walker and Halstead’s
(as provided in your Reader) views (see essay question)
and not on general views of these concepts. Do not base
your discussions on what other authors have said, as they
may not interpret the concepts in the same way. Clarify
how these concepts violate/do not violate one another
and do not talk about the issues in general/summarise.
This is an argumentative essay, thus it is not acceptable to
state or claim an issue as fact - it MUST be argued! i.e.
when there is trust there will be equality………
When using examples ensure they illustrate your
arguments clearly. The examples must illustrate the
argument/point you are trying to make clearly.
Your voice must be evident in all aspects of the
assignment, not only in the final section. Thus you cannot
merely list what author’s have claimed, but must use
these authors’ views (esp those provided to you) to base
your arguments on (based on your reflections).
i.e. the concept of community as viewed by Walker./
community vs communism???????
PLEASE FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS: Including font, size and
SPACING…. (shows respect if you do!)
Referencing (in-text and post-text) needs to be used
consistently and correctly (NB for exam preparation!!)
GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR EXAMS!!!!!
EXAM PREPARATION:
The exam is an open book exam. All notes/readings/slides
etc relating to Education 3A may be taken into the venue.
All 4 readings should be taken into consideration when
preparing for the exam.
Your interpretation of these readings is more important
than learning the readings (you will have them with you
when writing anyway).
Ensure you understand the readings and what the main
points are in each of them prior to the exam. Request
assistance from the tutors if this is still not clear.
Take all feedback from your test and assignment into
consideration as these were provided with care, in an
attempt to guide you to improve your responses.
Ensure that you are familiar with the correct referencing
techniques, as you will require these in the exam. This
includes in-text as well as post-text (list of references)
referencing techniques. A full list of references for all 4
readings is provided in the back of your reader.
EXAM TIME AND WRITING:
Your exam is scheduled for 3 hours. Please use these 3
hours productively.
You will be required to answer 2 of the 3 questions posed
in the exam paper.
Question 1 is compulsory (Strike). You have a choice
between question 2 or 3 (Include other 3 readings).
You will be required to write an academic essay in each
question, thus please use correct format (introduction,
appropriate sub-sections and conclusion + a list of
references) in both questions.
READ each question carefully and make sure that you fully
understand everything that is required from you.
Underline all components (especially verbs) of the
question and ensure you cover them in your responses.
Please take a few minutes to prepare for each question.
This includes your main arguments as well as the
examples you will be using to illustrate the points you are
trying to make.
Please answer ONLY what is required from the question.
DO not waste time in providing general information from
the texts. USE this information to answer the specific
question posed.
You must ensure that your time management is accurate.
Spend no more than one and a half hour per question.
This will enable you to give equal attention to both
questions within the 3 hour period.
Please write/argue clearly and legibly (I cannot assess
what I cannot read).
Keep to the length restrictions. If required to write 3
pages, please do not write more than 3, as this will not be
assessed or taken into consideration as part of your
response.
You MUST reference any ideas, thoughts, words etc which
are derived from another source (In-text and in a list of
references for each question). You will NOT be able to
pass the exam if this is not done!!
Do not let stress and anxiety be detrimental to your ability
to do your best. Read the question and ‘speak’ to me in
your responses. I know each and every one of you can do
well.
I look forward to seeing you all there. All the best, I know
you can do it!!!!
