Editor's Notes

  1. Recording & slides will be sent to your professors afterwards
  2. My office is located on the second floor, behind the door marked Collection Management. Your best bet to reach me is via email and/or an appointment. All appointments will be held via Zoom until further notice. You’ll receive the link in an email when you request an appointment.
  3. The Education materials, including the LC Class L books, are located on the 3rd floor. Some materials are still in transition, so please stop by the main desk and request whatever you need! Don’t be afraid to ask if you can’t find something – sometimes things are in closed stacks or other hiding places you might not know about. You can also request items while you are searching the library’s catalog by logging in with your myBelmont information. Requested items can be picked up on the first floor, near the study rooms. The library is open to students. You’ll need to wear a mask when you’re in the building, and it’s card access only after 5pm.
  4. Type in the chat what kinds of sources you think you’ll be looking for in this class! Substantial information Reliable information Also known as… Scholarly resources Journal articles Research studies Newspaper articles Trade publications Newsletters Specific magazines
  5. What makes a source substantial? It’s not automatically going to be anything you find in the library. You shouldn’t automatically exclude anything you find on the web, either! Rather, think about these two areas. Is it credible? The criteria in this area help you determine if this is a source worth pursuing further or worth trying to use in your project. You’re probably already familiar with the criteria listed here, right? Please remember that bias/agenda are important, but don’t get hung up on them. This should be something you consider when you vet the source - is the bias/agenda in the way, or is it acknowledged and/or handled well? Is it useful? The criteria in this area are really focused on whether or not you can use this source in your project. Sometimes you may decide something is useful when you’re doing your research, only to discover that it’s not as useful as you thought when you’re working on your project. That doesn’t mean it’s a “bad” source - just that you didn’t find it useful. Even sources that are not useful can be helpful in focusing your research question or clarifying what you’re looking for. ————————- Evaluating information can be complex. I can’t tell you exactly what a “good” source looks like and a “bad” source looks like because it depends on so many factors. I wouldn’t even say that everything you find in the library is “good” and everything you find on the web in “bad.” You will likely need information from both the library and the web. We recommend evaluating information in two different ways: Credibility test - list of criteria Author - who is the author and what makes them credible? If it’s an organization/website, who are they? Source of publication Date Bias/agenda - important, but don’t get too hung up on this. You could say everything is biased, but that’s not helpful when you’re evaluating information. If you vet the author and source, you should be able to determine bias/agenda. All of these criteria will help you determine if the information is trustworthy, overall How is it useful to you; to the claim you are trying to make, and in what way? This is where the language from BEAM is helpful.
  6. POLL: Where to you usually start your research? – Wikipedia, google, google scholar, library, somewhere else (no wrong answer!) Raise hands to vote
  7. Poll Title: Do not modify the notes in this section to avoid tampering with the Poll Everywhere activity. More info at polleverywhere.com/support Where do you start your research? https://www.polleverywhere.com/multiple_choice_polls/LTE1NzE5OTc5NzI?flow=Default&onscreen=persist

  9. POLL: Where to you usually start your research? - Wikipedia, google, google scholar, library, somewhere else (no wrong answer!) Wikipedia? Encyclopedia; can be unreliable; trouble following up on sources Google? Overwhelming! Not well organized Google scholar? Better, but still not well organized; can’t access everything; outdated stuff first?! Put in the chat: What are some issues you’ve run into while using these to look for sources for your research projects? Library? More reliable; better organized; less overwhelming (slightly)
  10. Before we look at the mechanics of how to use the library resources (where to click, etc.) we are going to talk about how to frame a better search
  11. Keyword searching is what you always do with a search box – type some words in and hope for the best! Subject searching is another way of building more specific searches. Many resources have a thesaurus available to make subject searching easier.
  12. AND works like a plus sign to combine terms for my search. It’s best used for terms that are not synonyms or similar ideas
  13. OR expands my search to include all of the terms that I connect with it. It’s best used for synonyms or similar ideas
  14. I can use them together to make my searches more specific and more efficient (I don’t have to type all the search terms over and over) The more terms I add, the more likely I am to get very few results. Sometimes you have to simplify a bit to find more results. Quotations marks work to keep your phrase together as a phrase. distance education or distance learning or online education or online learning or remote learning or remote education or virtual education or virtual learning or e-learning pandemic or epidemic or outbreak or covid-19 or coronavirus
  15. Thesaurus: Use these to get more exact results specific to a particular database. Controlled vocabulary list of subjects and related terms used to standardize the indexing in the database. You can select and search for synonyms, related, and preferred terms Mix and match thesaurus terms and keywords as search terms
  16. Start at library home page and go to EDU guide Show quick links; databases Off campus access to databases
  17. videos will be updated soon, so check the Education research guide for the most recent videos
