        EDLD 5362
      Lamar University
        L20284840
Mission
    To empower all students to make educated choices and
meet challenges of the future as productive citizens.
    (Sallisaw ISD Technology Plan, 2012)
 A focused technology plan “calls for advanced
technologies used in our daily lives to our entire
education system to improve learning, accelerate the
adoption of effective practices, and use data for
    continuous improvement” (US Department of
    Education, 2010)
Vision
 We believe that people are empowered by their
independent use of technology and the
    opportunities to share resources and
communicate in our local and global
communities. It is critical that our students
become familiar with the tools of information
technology, given the rapid pace of technological
change, and the growth of information
technologies in all aspects of our lives. (Sallisaw
    ISD Technology Plan, 2011)
Vision
 We as educators must integrate technology tools with
new models of teaching that meet each student’s
individual learning style and help ensure that each
student has an opportunity to become a lifelong learner.
    (Sallisaw ISD Technology Plan, 2011)
 The technology plan will supplement the current
    district School Improvement Plan.
 A committee will work together to develop the
    Technology Plan, keeping in mind,
 The use of technology will be curriculum driven and should
be integrated into the total schools environment.
Overview
 Form a committee
 Assess Needs/Evaluate Current Plan
 Research
 Model National Education Technology Plan
 Plan Infrastructure
 Plan Professional Development
 Budget
 Implement Plan
 Evaluate Plan
Mission of Sallisaw ISD Technology
                Plan
 Sallisaw ISD will provide up-to-date technology
    so that students can:
 Improve their critical thinking and problem solving
      skills
 Expand their knowledge base to compete in a global
      society
 Work ethically and independently with a diverse
population within the classroom and beyond
 Access, analyze, evaluate and communicate
information in quick, efficient, and creative formats
Mission of Sallisaw ISD Technology
                Plan
 Sallisaw ISD will provide up-to-date technology so that
    staff can:
 Accurately and efficiently assess, monitor, and communicate
        student progress
     Continually improve professional skills
 Share skills and resources with colleagues, both within the
        local school system and beyond
 Improve instructional strategies to increase student
        achievement
 Demonstrate leadership and vision in the use of technology
to increase student achievement and staff productivity
Form a Committee
 A committee is critical to the success of a new
technology plan. The following steps will be
    taken to form a committee:
 Members will represent each campus and will
include a cross section technology knowledge as well
as diverse members of the community
 Members will bring expertise ranging from:
      curriculum, planning, budgeting, technology
      hardware/software, and professional development
Needs/Evaluate Current Plan
 Because the State of Oklahoma is converting to the Common
core Curriculum, technology must be evaluated to allow the
district to effectively engage all student, track all student data and
develop/update a plan that prepares all students for success.
 Current needs:
 Inventory: Infrastructure, hardware, software, and other technology tools
 List of needs, including updates and repairs will be made
 Staff/Student surveys to determine the levels of technology integration
that exists in the learning environment
 Test scores from benchmarks, Common Core and other student
evaluations will be examined to determine specific areas of concern
 Infrastructure's stability, reliability and level of connectivity will be
         determined
Needs/Evaluate Current Plan
 Evaluate Plan
 The Sallisaw ISD technology plan at the beginning
of the 2012 – 2013 school year should focus on
updating the infrastructure of the entire district
 Plans to increase bandwidth and reliable wireless
connectivity throughout district should be discussed
Research
 The committee members will research other
schools similar in size and make-up to our
district to determine future technology steps and
    purchases
 Findings will be presented to the committee and
    improvements will be discussed
Model National Educational
             Technology Plan
 The National Educational Technology Plan
    presents five goals;
 “Addressing one of the five essential components of
        learning powered by technology: Learning,
        assessment, teaching, infrastructure, and
productivity” (US Department of Education, 2010)
Model National Educational
           Technology Plan
 By using the National Educational Plan and the
    International Society for Technology (ITSE)
    NETS*S (students), *T (teachers), *A
(administrators) will be one of the guiding
    factors of the committee.
 “Technology standards are the roadmap to
    teaching effectively and growing professionally
in a digital world” (ITSE, 2011)
Infrastructure
 Steps to overhaul/update the existing
    infrastructure include:
     Increase bandwidth
     Provide reliable wireless connectivity

     Provide dependable/timely technical support
Professional Development
 “All professional educators are well connected to the
content and resources, data and information, and peers
    and experts” (Nagel, 2010)
 Professional development should be designed in order
for teachers to successfully apply technology to meet
    instructional needs of the students
 Professional development will be scheduled over the
summer and on dates throughout the school year
 Budget to devise a plan to compensate teachers for the
professional development conducted during summer and
other non-scheduled district wide professional development
        dates.
Professional Development
 Training will be hands-on and support will be
available from the technology director and other
members of staff that demonstrate the ability to
    effectively teach other teachers
 Online training and access to experts will be
    made available throughout the year
Budget
 All district improvements in technology are
directly connected to the availability and amount
    of the budget
 Every effort will be made to provide
        hardware/software at a reduced cost
          Shareware
          Freeware

          Open source

          Hardware at reduced prices
Budget
 It is important, “when considering which
technology your school district is going to
implement, you must consider the potential
return on investment, as it relates to student
learning and your district’s strategic goals”
    (Moore, 2006)
Budget
 Considerations
     E-Rate contributions/discounts
     E-Rate approvals

     Grants

     Donations

     School Board approval

     State approval
Implementation
 To get the ball rolling:
 Obtain support/involvement from all administrators
     Update/building technology infrastructure
     Updating classroom/campus technology
     Implement training
 Provide opportunities for teachers to collaborate with peers/
        experts to share best practices
          School/Teachers Wikis and Blogs
 Technical support must be readily available
     Engage students
     Facilitating improved student learning
Implementation
 “The power of technology to support
    continuous and lifelong learning” (Duncan,
    2010)
 Must be the all-encompassing goal when the time
        comes to implementing the plan.
Evaluations
 How long will the plan be effective?
 How is the plan impacting all student learning, including
    technology skills.
 Conduct teacher surveys at the end of each school year to assess
the effectiveness of professional development, and delivery of
    instruction
 “Effective technology plans are short term, not long term” (See,
    1997).
 Must keep this in mind as we evaluate the plan
 Communicate with all share holders the successes and failures, as
well as the future technology advancements for the coming year
Solutions
 After the plan has been evaluated, committee
members must be prepared to brainstorm new
    ideas based on emerging technology
 Staff and students should be consulted through
surveys to determine areas for solutions
Possible Solutions
 Create new computers labs to supplements old
    ones at each school campus
 In the future Sallisaw ISD would like to become
    a 1-to-1 school
 Provide a laptop for each student enrolled at Sallisaw
        Public Schools
