Nikola Tesla was born in 1856 in Croatia and became fascinated with electricity from a young age. He was an excellent student and studied engineering. Tesla immigrated to New York where he met Thomas Edison and George Westinghouse, pitching his idea of an alternating current electric system. Westinghouse supported Tesla's development of AC power, which was demonstrated at the 1893 Chicago World's Fair. Tesla registered over 700 patents in his lifetime and made breakthrough discoveries, but also struggled with financing later projects and lived in poverty for his final years.
