Frank O'Connor presented at the "Making Business Sense of Sustainable Development" conference on conflicts between economic, social and environmental aspirations. He discussed how ecodesign, which aims to reduce environmental and social impacts through design, requires considering a product's entire lifecycle. However, there are conflicts because sustainable development is not always a priority in our globalized economy that promotes over-consumption. Ecodesign that considers the full lifecycle is good business practice and the only sustainable path for businesses in the long run.

8 million tonnes of plastic leak into the oceans each year, and more than 80% is from Asia! If we don't act now, there will be more plastic in the oceans than fish by 2050. It is time for individuals, companies and governments to rethink waste, especially in Asia. Today's linear ‘take, make, dispose’ economic model relies on large quantities of cheap, easily accessible materials and energy, and is a model that is reaching its physical limits. Today 80–120 billion USD of plastic materials is lost to the economy every year (plastic which is used just one time and then incinerated, landfilled or leaked into ocean). This is not just a business loss, but one of the biggest environmental challenges of our time.
An attractive and viable alternative that governments and businesses are exploring is the Circular Economy. This session - specifically focusing on plastic - brought insights from global business leaders, to social entrepreneurs and waste pickers who are all beginning to see waste not as trash, but as a resource. In emerging countries, managing waste has even become a solution to uplift people out of poverty. As the issue keeps growing, new regulations (such as Extended Producer Responsibility) have started to come into effect across Asia, making brands & producers responsible for recycling their post-consumer waste. Our speakers shared what it implies for big brands and each of us.

The workshop in Arusha explored the East African/Tanzanian environment for village energy, local case studies, challenges and opportunities, with a view to formulating policy recommendations for policymakers, funders, NGOs and other stakeholders the region. An important part of the workshop, and indeed the whole Smart Villages initiative work programme, was to gather evidence from existing projects that have provided or facilitated sustainable off-grid energy solutions in the developing world.The workshop gathered more than 50 experts, including policymakers, NGOs, off-grid energy entrepreneurs and others to look for solutions to providing energy to villages off the grid.

This document discusses using eye movement data to infer image relevance in a content-based image retrieval system. An experiment was conducted where 10 participants viewed images from 101 categories to perform image searching tasks. Eye movement data including fixation duration, fixation count, and number of revisits was analyzed. The results show that fixation duration and count were significantly higher for positively relevant images compared to irrelevant images. This suggests eye movement data could provide an implicit form of relevance feedback to improve image retrieval systems.
A decision tree was then developed to predict user feedback during the tasks based on the eye tracking measures. It achieved over 87% accuracy, demonstrating the potential of using natural eye movement as a robust source of relevance feedback to bridge the semantic gap in

Designing plastics circulation
Presently most electrical/electronic equipment (EEE) is not designed for recycling, let alone for circulation. Plastics in these products account for 20% of material use, and through better design, significant environmental and financial savings could be gained.
Technological solutions and circular design opportunities already exist, but they haven’t been implemented yet.
Some challenges, such as ease of disassembly, could be resolved through better communication and by sharing learnings across the value chain.
Instead of WEEE, we should focus on developing CEEE: Circular Electrical and Electronic Equipment.
The case examples of this report show how different stages of the lifecycle can be designed so that plastics circulation becomes possible and makes business sense.

Ecodesign, also known as design for environment, involves designing products and services to reduce environmental impacts across their lifecycles from material sourcing through end of life. Over 80% of a product's environmental impacts are determined during the design stage. However, barriers like lack of awareness, resources and competing priorities sometimes prevent companies from adopting ecodesign. The government and Ecodesign Centre Wales seek to address these barriers and facilitate knowledge sharing to promote ecodesign in Wales.

Co-design Workshop
The Ecodesign Centre (EDC) was established in September 2006 through funding from the Welsh Assembly Government to build capabilities around ecodesign in industry, public sector organizations, and higher education in Wales. The EDC delivers ecodesign initiatives and develops expertise on ecodesign for Wales through applied research, demonstrations with industry, knowledge sharing, communications, training, and international partnerships. Orangebox has challenging environmental goals like zero landfill waste and using 50% recycled materials in products, with perceived benefits including innovation, cost savings, and improved brand perception. However, some companies do not adopt ecodesign due to barriers such as lack of resources, awareness, competing priorities, and uncertainty around benefits.
