Mega events the olympics and their strategic uses - guest lecture (22 april 2...Dr. Michael B. Duignan
Michael Duignan gave a guest lecture on delivering Olympic mega-events and their impacts on local communities and businesses. He discussed how mega-events have evolved over time and are now used strategically for urban regeneration, place promotion, and legacy benefits. However, criticisms argue they can displace local residents and businesses through gentrification and limited community consultation. Using the 2012 London Olympics as a case study, he examined the regeneration of the Olympic park area but also the risks small businesses faced from rising rents and limited opportunities to influence plans. The lecture provided perspectives from local policymakers, event organizers, and business owners on exploiting opportunities and challenges of hosting mega-events.
The document discusses Arturo Soria's 19th century proposal for a "linear city" model in Madrid intended to address problems of overpopulation, transport, and sanitation. Soria's design integrated nature into the city with rows of trees and houses having gardens. It included wider streets, detached houses, and green spaces. The linear city was surrounded by nature with a central area for services. While the project began construction, economic difficulties and rising land costs prevented its full realization, though some elements like a main street remain today in northern Madrid.

The document summarizes the key aspects of the Cerdá Plan from 1859 for expanding Barcelona. It laid out an egalitarian design with straight, perpendicular streets and blocks surrounded by gardens and trees for sanitation. Each block would have a central garden and multi-family buildings around its perimeter to provide light and ventilation to all homes. The plan aimed to balance urban and rural values but speculative development later eliminated gardens and increased building heights and densities against Cerdá's vision.
This document outlines plans for a smart city project in the Porta Romana/Vettabbia district of Milan. The project aims to retrofit buildings, install smart lampposts and an electric vehicle sharing platform, and create a microgrid to make the area more connected, sustainable, and socially inclusive. Key goals include saving 198,1007 kWh of energy annually and reducing CO2 emissions by 388 tons per year through building retrofits. The project also hopes to replace 1% of vehicles with EVs to reduce NOx and PM10 emissions and save on mobility costs.

It finds that central Vancouver displays many typical CBD features, such as distinct land use patterns, concentration of public buildings and retail outlets, vertical zoning, and high population density. It also has very tall buildings, high land values, and attracts people from outside the city to work and spend money.
This document provides an overview of various location theories and models of urban structure. It discusses Weber's location theory which considers transportation, labor, and agglomeration costs. Weber's location triangle is described as a way to find the optimal location that minimizes these costs. Hotelling's model of linear markets and Losch's zone of profitability model are also mentioned. The document then covers central place theory and Christaller's hexagonal hierarchy of central places. Classic urban models like the concentric zone, sector, and multiple nuclei models are summarized. Characteristics of cities in different world regions like Europe, Eastern Europe, Latin America, Africa, and Southeast Asia are outlined.
The speaker discusses the competitiveness of the Basque Country region over the past several decades:
- The Basque Country has experienced significant economic growth since the 1980s, driven by deliberate economic policies as well as external factors like European integration.
- Key policies and institutions that supported growth included establishing a new institutional framework in the 1980s, investing heavily in public spending and policies in the 1980s, and integrating into the European economic community.
- However, poor macroeconomic policies in the 1980s exacerbated an economic crisis in the early 1990s that led to substantial job losses. Conversely, favorable exchange rates ahead of the euro helped triple exports and drive strong employment growth in the late 1990s.

Shi Nan. Central government's role in planning moscowuforum
The changing role of the Chinese central government in urban and rural planning is discussed. Decentralization occurred historically due to factors like fiscal decentralization and public participation reforms. Centralization is now occurring through regional planning, planning supervision systems, and central approval of major city plans. There is debate around the appropriate division of power between central and local governments with arguments on both sides. The conclusion is that national interests should be identified and required in local plans rather than central governments directly drafting plans.
