This is a presentation with a purpose of educating school kids (7th grade) about the importance of energy efficiency and also connecting energy usage with the larger picture that is Earth. This is a first of a series of presentations I am doing at Vidyavardhaka school in Mysore. Before the presentation, the students were already aware of the concepts of electricity generation, transmission etc. After the presentation, the kids were able to say that a proportionate amount of coal was burnt every time they wasted electricity. To summarize, I quote one student who said at the end of the presentation, "Sir, why can't they replace the bulbs (incandescant) in Mysore palace with CFLs? That would save a lot of coal from being burnt and prevent a lot of pollution".

ABSTRACT
Mangrove ecosystem should always be preserved in order to keep its ecologycal functions. This study aims to analyze distribution and structure of mangrove in Mempawah District, West Kalimantan Province. This study conducted on November 2014 antil May 2015 with five transects that spread in four districts of coastal area and one in the island which identified through landsat 8 image recording on February 6th 2014 showed that the area of 739,31 hectares grown by mangroved. Each station was conducted research using quadratic transetc methode as with Indonesian National Standard (INS) No.7717 year 2011 about mangrove Surveying and Mapping also Regulation of The Information and Geospatial Agency Leader Number 3 Year of 2014 About Technical Guidelines Geospatial Data Collection and Processing of Mangrove. The study found 13 species of mangrove consisted and included in five tribes which were the main component of mangrove in the district Mempawah, only 51,02% in good conditions.

The transport and establishment of non-indigenous species (NIS) is regarded as one of the greatest threats to the world’s biodiversity, with significant environmental, economic, social and health impacts worldwide. Within the marine environment, shipping is recognized as the most important and prevalent transport vector of NIS, across international and domestic borders at ever increasing rates. By surveying fouling communities on hard substrates in Banda Naira, we will develop a baseline dataset essential to identify any NIS in subsequent surveys/analysis using the Western Australia early-warning system model. The fieldwork will be divided into 4 surveys within 12 months and settlement arrays will be deployed and every 3 months (January, May and August 2016). Species identification will be conducted morphologically and molecularly. Data on commercial and recreational ship traffic will be collected. to determine high-risk vessel types and routes. The recreational vessel questionnaire will be provided to all sailing boats coming to Banda Naira (July/August 2016), which is the main sailing season from Australia. This model biosecurity project and information is expected to later be applied for establishing similar biosecurity approaches in other ports of the Indonesian archipelago. We believe the monitoring of NIS in the Banda Islands to represent an important step to protect marine biodiversity, secure local communities livelihoods and prevent the transport and establishment of potential pest species to other Indonesian regions and to Australia.

The goal of our study was to evaluate the genetic diversity of whale sharks (Rhincodon typus) observed in Cenderawasih Bay, Indonesia, compared with that of whale sharks elsewhere in the Indo-Pacific region using mitochondrial DNA. We collected tissue samples from 31 whale sharks, virtually all adolescent males, in Cenderawasih Bay and then extracted, amplified, and sequenced mitochondrial DNA from the cytochrome oxidase I (COI) gene of the mtDNA COI gene. Genetic diversity of whale sharks in Cenderawasih Bay was low. We detected seven haplotypes and estimated haplotype diversity at 0.187 and nucleotide diversity at 0.002. The average number of pairwise differences was 0.254. These data suggest that the whale sharks that we encountered in Cenderawasih Bay were closely related and less related to whale sharks elsewhere in the Indian Ocean and western Pacific Ocean.
