This document outlines early learning content standards for English language arts in Ohio. It discusses how language and literacy develop dynamically in young children. The research shows that children who enter kindergarten with rich language experiences are ready to learn to read. The key components of effective early literacy programs are identified as: vocabulary and oral language development, phonological awareness, print awareness and knowledge, comprehension, book awareness, and beginning writing awareness. Early childhood educators must provide intentional experiences and curriculum to help children develop proficiency in these areas to establish a strong foundation for literacy.
