Editor's Notes
Hi and welcome to a brief presentation and demo about the Catelas Early Case Analytics solution. Catelas was founded in 2007 and is in use by many of the world’s leading consultancies & within Fortune 500 legal & compliance departments. I wanted to start by asking you a few questions to better understand the type of cases you get involved in.How important to you is getting to the facts of the case, early? (scale of 1-7 – with 7 being absolutely critical)How many cases a year would you say it is very important to gain this upfront intelligence? What type of cases – production requests, regulatory inquiries, internal investigations, FCPA, etc
Traditional tools are ill suited to the promise of “Early Case Assessment”. What we are seeing in the market place is vendors rebranding their services around Early Case Assessment and effectively pricing their services around post-culling results and calling that ECA. The point is they are heavily reliant on keywords both for culling the content down to manageable proportions and for the search and review piece. What do you think? Is ECA really doing its job? With keywords you learn as the case progresses, but you are reliant on assumptions at the beginning when everything is new. This leaves counsel open to surprises…. … as important documents are missed and key people ignored until many iterations and much time has past To be of any value Early Case Analytics needs infuse more upfront intelligence into the process and inform counsel of what they don’t already know….. thereby eliminating any possible surprises or “gotchas” later on in the litigation process
Catelas delivers Early Case Analytics – real intelligence about a case VERY early on in the process – literally within a couple of days of the case being opened. What we provide are Intelligent Datapoints very early in the case or “evidentiary support” - that enables counsel to make reasoned strategic decisions and eliminate those downstream surprisesOur mission is to tell you/counsel things you did not already know that will have a material impact on the case.
So how do we do it?Our methodology originates from Law Enforcement. We approach eDiscovery the way the law approaches a crime scene. We focus on the people first – establishing how people are linked to one another, then we look at timelines (ie when were people speaking to one another) and finally we apply keyword searching to the RIGHT people. Our unique differentiation is our ability to derive value from Log Files. We are able to use log files to provide a 100% footprint of a company, before we actually collect or read a single email or document. This provides counsel with critical intelligence, even before collection & review begins, by providing “the cast of characters” – who is involved. We then apply advanced behavioral algorithms to make some sense of the communications data. We GRADE relationships which his important, ie we do not simply count emails which some of our competitors do. Finally the visualization maps paint pictures – making the non-obvious become obvious.Lastly, it is worth noting that we can imports virtually all forms of data at any stage of the EDRM. In fact a lot of our work is “making sense” of large volumes of data – we can import large cases, well in excess of 500GB, and quickly prioritize where to focus the review.
Often when we present to our clients they say. Okay we like the concept, but where do you fit in terms of the EDRM?Good questionThis unique approach allows Catelas to deliver insight early in the EDRM process and consequently significantly improves the outcome for counsel. We focus in 2 primary areas – Identification and Early Case Analytics. By getting the people question right first time we provide a fast, precise and comprehensive solution for preservation & collection – BEFORE a single email is ever collected. This same technology allows counsel to triage a dataset and quickly identify the key players and uncover the hot documents for review by senior counsel. Because its fast it can inform counsel when they need such support the most – at the beginning of a matter.
So in summary…Fast, precise and impactful reports within a few days of a case being opened.Providing Intelligent Datapointsor “evidentiary support” - that enables counsel to make reasoned (or fact-based) strategic decisions and eliminate those downstream surprisesOr as I said earlier - our mission is to tell you things you did not already know that will have a material impact on the case.
