This document provides an overview of key economic concepts including voluntary exchange, specialization, opportunity cost, and productivity. It uses examples from colonial America to illustrate these concepts. Colonists regularly engaged in voluntary exchange through bartering since they specialized in different skills. Their economic choices resulted in opportunity costs. Productivity increased during the late 18th and early 19th centuries due technological advancements like the cotton gin, steam engine, railroads and assembly lines which boosted manufacturing and mass production.
The document discusses the history of trade and bartering in the early American colonies. It explains that when the colonies were first founded, colonists would trade goods they produced like crafts, farm products or hunted game since not everyone could produce everything they needed to survive. They would voluntarily exchange items through barter to obtain goods from others. The document provides examples of early colonial trades like a woman trading rabbits for milk and eggs. It describes how bartering helped both buyers and sellers meet their needs.
This document provides an introduction to business economics and fundamental economic concepts. It discusses how economics deals with how individuals earn and spend income to maximize gains. Economics studies the economic problems faced by individuals, businesses, society, and globally due to unlimited wants and limited resources. Economics teaches rational decision making to deal with scarcity. The economic problem involves determining what and how goods and services should be produced, and who should receive them, given scarce resources. Opportunity cost is the next best alternative given up when making a choice. Business economics applies economic principles to solve business problems and facilitate decision making.
The document discusses the economies of early First Nations and European settlers in Canada. It describes how First Nations' economies were based on meeting needs through cooperative production and equal distribution of locally available natural resources. Europeans introduced a competitive market-based system focused on accumulating wealth through the production and trade of commodities like beaver furs and lumber. Over time this led to changes in First Nations economies and decline as European trade goods and diseases spread. The concept of economic empowerment in Canada is also introduced.
The document defines key economic concepts including exchange, barter, the three types of money, needs vs wants, economic choice and opportunity cost. It explains supply and demand, scarcity, and what can be done with money by spending, saving or investing it. It also outlines the three types of resources - human, capital and natural - and defines producers, consumers, and economic specialization. Finally, it discusses interdependence and how people and societies rely on each other for goods and services.

The essay discusses the relationship between masters and slaves in William Shakespeare's play The Tempest. It notes that while seemingly strange, the master-slave dynamic can benefit both parties if the slaves have expectations that their masters might fulfill. The relationship is one of perceived power and fear - slaves fear punishment if they do not meet their masters' expectations, while masters wield power over the slaves. This fear and the masters' threats keep the slaves obedient and working diligently.

This document discusses how Native American tribes in the 18th and 19th centuries lost their homelands and faced prohibitions on practicing their cultures and religions as a result of Indian Wars, which caused declines in passing on tribal languages and traditions to new generations. However, Native American cultures are now thriving as tribes work to teach their youth about language, religion, and ceremonial traditions. Hispanic Americans also fought for freedom and faced cultural challenges, though differences existed in traditional gender roles between Native and Hispanic cultures in the past.
This document discusses the global nature of trade and its impact on developing countries. It notes that goods like coffee, tea, and clothing are produced through global supply chains that involve many countries. However, trade has not always benefited poorer countries. The document then outlines problems small farmers in developing countries face, such as low prices, lack of support, and debt. It introduces fair trade as an alternative that guarantees better prices and conditions for farmers through certification. The conclusion encourages supporting fair trade to improve lives in developing nations.

This document provides an overview of chapters 4 sections 4 and 5 which discuss England's economic policy of mercantilism towards its colonies. Under mercantilism, the colonies could only sell raw materials like tobacco and cotton to England. English ships had to be used for trade. The triangular trade route brought slaves from Africa to the West Indies and goods from the West Indies to North America and Europe. Changes in England like the Glorious Revolution inspired colonists to expect similar rights like trial by jury and no taxation without representation. Colonial society included women and Africans playing important roles. The Great Awakening, Enlightenment, and growing cities also influenced colonial life.
Under the economic system of mercantilism in Colonial America, all trade was controlled and protected by Great Britain for its own benefit. Great Britain dominated trade within and outside the colonies, taking profits, goods, services, and currency to increase its own wealth. Colonists could only export goods to and import goods from Britain using British ships and crews.
Colonists earned money through various jobs like farming, crafts like blacksmithing, and professions like law and medicine. Understanding User Needs and Satisfying ThemAggregage

We know we want to create products which our customers find to be valuable. Whether we label it as customer-centric or product-led depends on how long we've been doing product management. There are three challenges we face when doing this. The obvious challenge is figuring out what our users need; the non-obvious challenges are in creating a shared understanding of those needs and in sensing if what we're doing is meeting those needs.
In this webinar, we won't focus on the research methods for discovering user-needs. We will focus on synthesis of the needs we discover, communication and alignment tools, and how we operationalize addressing those needs.
Industry expert Scott Sehlhorst will:
• Introduce a taxonomy for user goals with real world examples
• Present the Onion Diagram, a tool for contextualizing task-level goals
• Illustrate how customer journey maps capture activity-level and task-level goals
• Demonstrate the best approach to selection and prioritization of user-goals to address
• Highlight the crucial benchmarks, observable changes, in ensuring fulfillment of customer needs

price incentives to illustrate historical events.
2. Hi! My name is Mrs.
Econ and today I am
going to teach you about
economics.
Economics is the study
of the making, buying,

3. Barter-Trade When the 13 colonies
were founded, some
people were good
hunters, some were
craftsmen, and some
were farmers.
In order to get things
that a person needed to
survive, one person
might have traded one
item for another item.
This is known as
voluntary exchange.
I have 5 rabbits to
trade. Want to trade
with me?
4. What is voluntary exchange?
People will trade if they
both get something from
it.
The lady trades a jug of
milk and 3 eggs for 5
rabbits.
She needs the rabbits to
make rabbit stew.
She’ll use the rabbits’
skin to make a fur cap.
The man’s family needs

Yes. I will trade

6. Trade was very important after
the Revolutionary War ended.
Under the Articles of Confederation, Congress
had no power to make laws about trade.
This turned out to be a big problem among the
thirteen states.
7. How was this a problem?
•Each state wanted to control their own trade. They
tried to make big profits.
•Each state made their own money. Sometimes they
would not accept another state’s money.
•Most foreign countries would not trade with the United
States because the 13 states could not get along with
each other.
8. How did they solve these
economic problems?
Thanks goodness they
wrote the U.S. Constitution!
The Constitution says that
the federal government
controls trade between the
states and with foreign

The state government
controls trade within its own

Opportunity cost is the value of what
is given up when a choice is made.
Every time you make a choice, you give
up something else.
You might decide to watch TV instead
of washing a neighbor’s car to make
some money.
Your opportunity cost is the money
you could have made washing the car!
15. Making Choices

grow corn instead of
tomatoes.
His opportunity cost
is the tomatoes he
could have grown.
16. Making Choices

friends roller skating.
17. Making Choices
All choices require giving up something
A dad decides to
watch his son’s
soccer game instead

computer.
18. Oh Give Me a Choice
(Tune: Home on the Range)
Oh give me a choice,
Oh, a difficult choice,
And I’ll think about what I could use.
I’ll have to decide,
With my eyes open wide,
What I’ll give up and what I will choose.
Opportunity cost!
It’s the thing you give up when you choose.
It’s the price that is paid
When a choice must be made.
It’s the thing that I surely will lose.
Let’s sing a song about
choice and opportunity
cost.
19. Leaders throughout history have had to
make choices that involved opportunity cost.
The kings and
queens decided to
spend money to
search for a short cut
to Asia. They paid for
ships, supplies, and
manpower.
Their opportunity
cost was the money
that could have be
used for important
things at home or to
trade with other
countries closer to
home.
20. How do price incentives affect
people’s behavior and choices?
A price incentive is used to affect
people’s buying behavior.
Incentives can motivate people to take
action!
An offer for “Buy one pizza, get one
free,” is a price incentive.
A sale where items are ½ price is a
price incentive.
