3. What is Mixed Reality?
In general: The result of blending the physical world with the digital world
Includes Real Environment, Augmented Reality (AR), Augmented Virtuality (AV) and
Virtual Environment
4. What is Mixed Reality?
Real environment: virtual environments are modeled after real environments such as persons, objects ,
landscapes. E.g. The famous windows XP background
Augmented Reality: AR brings aspects of the virtual word into the real world
Augmented Virtuality: It is best described as the inverse of AR, where
real world objects are layered over virtual environments
Virtual reality: VR is an interactive experience taking place within a simulated environment generated
through a computer
5. An example: Willemen Group
Belgian construction group
First company to use VR to attract employees
Potential employees can virtually visit three construction sites
Project leaders explain what you are seeing during your virtual tour
7. What will Mixed Reality bring about?
Marketing: advertisements could be shown in a three-dimensional thinking where we
could see ads ahead of us or around us.
Real estate business: The possibility to provide virtual tours of different locations instead
of having to visit them. See the example of Willemen Construct Group.
Navigation industry: Eyemaps uses your device’s camera in order to recreate your
surroundings (Augmented Reality) in 3D, also displaying names of rivers, mountains and
historic landmarks
8. What will Mixed Reality bring about?
Health Care Industry: Through VR, surgeons can be trained and tested before they
operate on sombody, preventing dangerous tasks. Applicable to all highly sensitive fields
to ensure employees are qualified.
Disrupt traditional sales strategies: Audi created ‘The Audi VR experience’ using
visualisation technology from Zerolight. By using a VR headset at the dealership,
customers can virtually configure their new Audi before buying their dream car.
In general, MR brings an end to the important factor that people aren’t willing to pay
for something they haven’t tried yet.
9. Gartner
I personally do not agree with the fact that Gartner puts MR in the third
phase of the Hype Cycle. I would put MR in the beginning of the fourth
fase of the Hype Cycle. Why? Because I had to create this presentation, I
have come across a lot of examples where MR was successfully
implemented. Willemen, Eyemaps and Audi are only three examples.
I understand the technology isn’t being used on a large scale, but the
companies that succeeded to do so, have a considerable advantage
towards their competitors.
