Finding and understanding E-Discovery education and education providers, and even perhaps wondering where to get started with E-Discovery education, can be a daunting task. There are many different options; many different organizations; free and paid; with a variety of classroom, online, and conference style forums; vendor and vendor neutral programs, and those having certification examinations as part of their curriculum. When looking at options to enhance your skills one of the first things you will want to take into account is your skill set, experience level, and overall objectives. There are a significant number of education paths that attorneys, paralegals, information technology professionals, electronic discovery specialists, and those new to the industry can pursue to learn the basics or increase their existing knowledge base in e-Discovery. I can't possibly cover every educational program for e-Discovery, and be sure there are other very reputable organizations, nor can I go into every detail of their offerings. The objective of this presentation is to show various organizations with various approaches so the full range of alternatives are shown and can be analyzed to compare against one another, other organizations, and to find the organization or program that best serves you. If you take the time examining each organization, you'll find one that best suits your goals and career path (all of these organizations, while extremely reputable, are not interchangeable and have at least slightly different curriculums and approaches.) Otherwise, there is a risk selecting a program that is either too advanced, not advanced enough, overly legal, or overly technical.
Don't let the name fool you, this organization welcomes everyone that has an interest in or works in the legal industry, specifically in civil litigation and electronic discovery, and isn't just for "Certified" e-Discovery specialists. ACEDS offers educational materials, membership opportunities that give a members access to exclusive content, an intense examination process to become certified as an e-Discovery specialist, and an annual conference that has various panels of experts that cover hot topics in e-Discovery with an exhibition of leading vendors and service providers in the e-Discovery market. ACEDS has also launched ACEDS University that has created significant educational materials to help give students a very strong foundation in e-Discovery. The ACEDS University's interactive, online, self-paced course teaches the basics of e-discovery across the Electronic Discovery Reference Model. The course is professionally designed and gives the student the ability to gauge their overall understanding of each chapter's materials covered by presenting five to ten questions at the end of each chapter. The ACEDS Advisory Board includes prominent attorneys, technology experts, and other notable industry professionals to help ensure a high quality, well rounded organization and program.
The Organization of Legal Professionals is an organization that offers educational content, various classes, certificate programs, certification exams, and membership options that gives a member access to exclusive content and discounts on OLP webinars and other materials. In addition to OLP's strong e-Discovery and litigation support curriculum, the OLP offers additional educational opportunities in other legal related areas. The OLP's classes and webinars are conducted in an interactive web-enabled environment that allows students to interact with the instructor and view the instructional materials. OLP educational options are for beginning, advanced, and expert-level students. The OLP Advisory Board and Board of Directors are made up of an impressive roster of attorneys, consultants, and technologists.Herbert Roitblat Ph.D., Chief Scientist & CTO at OrcaTec and OLP Board of Governors member states, "The OLP's primary goal is to support individuals and the community by helping to increase competence levels with education and to get individuals recognition for the education they have achieved."

The Sedona Conferencehttps://thesedonaconference.org/The Sedona Conference is a nonprofit research and educational organization, founded in 1997 by Richard G. Braman, where contributors discuss how the law should move forward on issues in the areas of antitrust law, complex litigation, and intellectual property rights. Working groups are created and produce principles, best practices, and guidelines for these specific areas of law. The amendments to the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure that include the rules on electronically stored information were based on the Sedona Conference's Sedona Principles. The publications the Sedona Conference generates on e-Discovery and Civil Litigation are well worth getting acquainted with. The Sedona Conference also has a Membership Program for those interested to support the Sedona Conference's mission and interact with others interested in issues in the areas of antitrust law, complex litigation, and intellectual property rights. Electronic Discovery Reference Modelhttp://www.edrm.net/First launched in 2005 and released publically in 2006, the EDRM was developed by a group facilitated by George Socha and Tom Gelbmann to provide a standardized approach to e-Discovery related activities. The Model helps visually depict the movement of electronic discovery components in phases. The EDRM contains nine phases of the e-Discovery process that everyone working in the field should be fairly familiar with. Accessing the knowledge of the EDRM is free and a very worthwhile model to fully understand - - it is the foundation to nearly every component of e-Discovery. EDRM not only covers the nine e-Discovery phases, but also has designed a Computer Assisted Review Reference Model, a Talent Task Matrix, a Model Code of Conduct, and the Information Governance Reference Model.Corporate counsel, corporate IT managers, law firms, consultants & service bureaus, and software providers can join EDRM to share best practices for managing the e-discovery processes from the initial management of electronically stored information all the way to the ultimate presentation of that information as well as to offer insights to others and help improve the e-discovery processes and industry.
Although not exclusively related to the legal or e-Discovery profession, the Project Management Institute has much to offer those in the legal industry. Project management practices can certainly benefit litigation and e-Discovery projects and these practices, with slight modification, can be a perfect fit for Legal Project Management implementation in a law firm or corporate law department. The project management framework can be used in every industry to help increase the success of projects. With the recent worldwide economic events and in-house counsel demanding a more methodical approach to managing matters by outside counsel, with transparency and collaboration, the legal industry can certainly benefit from a more standard and structured approach to project/matter management.PMI is one of the world's largest not-for-profit membership associations for the project management profession, with more than 650,000 members and credential holders in more than 185 countries. PMI has numerous project management certifications available, such as the CAPM (Certified Associate in Project Management), PMP (Project Management Professional), and RMP (Risk Management Professional).More specific to the legal field, PMI has a Legal Project Management Community of Practice that is geared toward the legal industry and generates newsletters, blogs, webinars, and other educational materials specific to the legal market. PMI also has many local city chapters that are engaged in the community and host regularly scheduled events.
ILTA is a membership driven organization that hosts annual conferences; hosts local and regional meetings, hosts webinars and other peer networking events; and publishes a countless number of white papers and surveys each year. Being an ILTA Volunteer City Representative in Pittsburgh PA, I find that one of the best kept secrets up until this point is, IF YOUR FIRM OR ORGANIZATION IS AN ILTA MEMBER, YOU ARE A MEMBER. Find out if you are a member and take advantage of the ILTA membership. Membership gives you access to Peer to Peer, a quarterly published magazine; access to an extensive collection of white papers; access to webinars and teleconferences; access to ILTA's Annual Conference; and much more. Even if your firm or organization is not a member, take advantage of attending free locally sponsored ILTA meetings on e-Discovery. Many cities have local volunteer city representatives that host local meetings and discuss relevant technology, legal topics, and best practices related to e-Discovery.
Finally, there are plenty of free webinars, podcasts, and blogs available, as well. Keep your eyes and ears open for free live and on-demand education sponsored or led by leaders in the industry; such as FTI, Kroll OnTrack, and Fios; free e-Discovery and legal related podcasts that can be easily downloaded via iTunes and The Legal Talk Network and listened to anywhere; and blogs by e-Discovery practitioners.
