Editor's Notes

  1. November 2010 If using the remote then click to advance to next slide or if just using keyboard then hit Enter to advance to next slide. The text shown in this script in red italics is not meant to be read aloud.
  2. Thank you for inviting me to speak about what APWA membership can do for you. [click/enter, to next slide]
  3. Before I talk about the solutions we provide, I want to take a few moments to explain what APWA is. [click/enter, to bring up description] It’s an educational and professional association of people from cities, towns, counties, states or provinces, federal agencies, along with those from the companies providing products and services to those agencies, all dedicated to providing high quality public works goods and services. [click/enter, to bring up next phrases] APWA is YOUR comprehensive public works SOLUTIONS network. It is THE preferred choice for professional membership! [click to next slide]
  4. So what does that really mean? Who are we? APWA consists of more than 28,500 members. The blue oval here represents our membership. All are members of one of our 64 chapters in the United States or Canada. And some of those chapters also have branches to make the relationship even more localized. Let me explain how the organization is set up. The 64 chapters each have a delegate which is appointed by the chapter’s Executive Committee. Delegates serve as liaison between all chapters of the Association; between chapters and their branches; and between chapters, their regional director and the Board of Directors. The House of Delegates (all 64 delegates) also acts as “think tank” for developing issues. The association is governed by a board of 17 members – the President, the President-Elect, the immediate Past President, plus the 9 Regional Directors and 5 At-Large Directors. The 9 Regional Directors are elected by the membership in the region. Each Regional Director represents 4 or more chapters. The 5 At-Large Directors cover specific topics related to public works. They are elected by the membership. The President-Elect is elected by the membership and he or she then moves into the President position the following year. An 8-member Board, one appointed from each chapter in Canada, guides the federal advocacy activities of the Canadian Public Works Association. And all are served by APWA staff at the headquarters in Kansas City, Missouri, and in Washington, DC Conversation and services are free-flowing with members able to communicate directly with their local chapter or branch, the Directors, or the national staff. [click/enter, to next slide]
  5. Also add into the mix various committees, councils, task forces, forums and other groups. Some of which you see listed here. [click/enter, to next slide]
  6. All those volunteer leaders and staff are guiding the organization and working together to develop programs and products for topics like [click/enter, to bring up bulleted list – read a few from list which are most applicable to the audience you are speaking to, then say … ] … and others you see on the list here. [click/enter, to next slide]
  7. Providing a comprehensive approach to professional development and continuous learning in public works is a primary focus for APWA. We do that with face-to-face and online learning opportunities. Face-to-face programs are offered at various locations across the continent by either the national association or a local chapter or branch. Some are very topic-specific, like our Fleet Management Workshop and our Construction Inspection Workshop. Most APWA programs offer CEU or PDH credits and, since APWA is an IACET authorized provider, [click/enter, to bring up more text] our courses often count for those states which have mandatory continuing Professional Competency Requirements. A full schedule of upcoming events is available on our website under events. [click/enter, to next slide]
  8. Another opportunity for face-to-face learning comes via our Public Works Institutes. These are standardized programs which concentrate on management and leadership development. [click/enter, to bring up more text] Core areas of study include: Supervisory Techniques and Skills  Basic Management Skills  Communication Skills  Leadership Skills  Community Service/Customer Orientation Skills  Legal Understanding  Fundamentals of Government  Finance  Resource Management Skills  Public Works Operations These programs are excellent for first-line supervisors and up, and for anyone aspiring to become a leader within the profession. Here you see a list of states where Public Works Institutes are currently available. In some locations they offer a combination of face-to-face and online institute programs. For specific info about any of these Institutes, visit the APWA website and click on Education, then on Public Works Institutes. [click/enter, to next slide]
  9. Our biggest face-to-face event is the annual national meeting and trade show. We call it the International Public Works Congress and Exposition or “The Best Show in Public Works.” In 2011 it will be held in Denver, Colorado. The International Congress and Exposition provides excellent opportunities to connect with other public works professionals from across the continent, explore the latest innovations, and talk shop. More info is available at www.apwa.net/Congress. [click/enter, to next slide]
  10. A couple of other annual national events offer those opportunities to connect, explore and learn, but they are more topic-specific. [click/enter, to bring up Snow Conf text & graphic] In April 2011 we will hold our North American Snow Conference in conjunction with the Pacific Northwest Snowfighters’ Conference in Spokane, Washington, and [click/enter, to bring up Sustainability Conf text & graphic] in June we’ll have the Sustainability in Public Works Conference in Portland, Oregon. More info about those conferences can be found on the APWA website. [click/enter, to next slide]
  11. Traveling away from your own locale for a face-to-face event isn’t always possible, so APWA has also developed learning opportunities which you can take advantage of anywhere you have an internet connection and a telephone. You can even share the training with other staff and pay just one registration fee. Programs are available on CD, after the initial broadcast, giving you more flexibility in fitting the training into your schedule. [click/enter, to bring up more text] We have 2 types of these online training opportunities – one is our Click, Listen and Learn programs, and the other is called Web-based Training. Web-based training programs are typically more technical and in-depth. CEUs or PDHs are available for both types of programs. To see a schedule of upcoming programs, visit the APWA website and click on Events. Or for more information about equipment needed or content provided, click on Education. [click/enter, to next slide]
  12. APWA also has business alliances with other training providers, which means as an APWA member you save money when using their programs. [click/enter, to bring up more text] Vista –promotes workplace safety by providing training products on general safety and heavy equipment operation. Products include pre-operation inspection checklists, instructor kits, videos, CD-ROMs and print materials Excal Visual - produces video training packages for environmental, health and safety compliance training including Stormwater, Facility Security, Environmental Management Systems, and more The Public Works Project Management Bootcamp offered by PSMJ Resources is the premier program where one can get a solid understanding of project management methods that have proven to work in both the private and public sectors. [click/enter, to bring up more] Visit the APWA website and click on Education, then on Business Alliances for complete details. [click/enter, to next slide]
  13. We recently established the APWA Center for Sustainability [click/enter, to 1 st bullet] which creates a foundation for sustainability action. The Center supports and intensifies members’ capacity to integrate current and future social, economic and environmental outcomes into local public works management. [click/enter, to bring up 2 nd bullet] The online mentoring programs are another new program from APWA. They are FREE online live discussions which are also recorded and made available for download afterwards, again free-of-charge. Visit www.apwa.net/About/Mentoring for more information. [click/enter, to bring up 3 rd bullet & graphic] We also have the Emerging Leaders Academy which provides intensive leadership and management training within the context of public works. It encourages professional growth through a strong network of peers, and offers an in-depth introduction to APWA at the national, chapter and branch levels. [click/enter, to bring up last bullet & graphic] The Master’s in Public Administration with an emphasis in Public Works programs at Norwich University and at the University of Nebraska-Omaha are new online programs offered in partnership with APWA. Additional information about these Master’s programs is available in the Education section of the APWA website, under Graduate Studies. [click/enter, to next slide]
  14. In addition, as a member, you’ll receive the monthly issue of the Reporter magazine which contains association and professional news and information. We also have a wide variety of books, videos, and logowear and merchandise available through our Public Works Resources catalog and the online bookstore. [click/enter, to next slide]
  15. APWA also provides opportunity for you to exchange success stories, news, lessons learned, and questions with other APWA members. If you have a public works problem, chances are someone else has dealt with a similar situation and can help. The “combined years of experience” available through this type of electronic networking is really phenomenal when you think about it! There are 15 subject areas: Management, Administration and Finance Operations Transportation Fleet Emergency Preparedness Design Engineering and Construction Environment Government Affairs Infrastructure Protection and Right-of-Way Management Rural and Small Communities Issues Urban Forum Education and Training Canadian Public Works Progressive Women in Public Works Public Works History Messages are via e-mail and the member has full control over which subject areas to participate in and how to receive the e-mails – can receive messages instantaneously as they are submitted or the next morning as a collection of the previous day’s messages. And best of all, it’s all FREE as an APWA member benefit. [click/enter, to next slide]
  16. There are several other social networking and collaboration tools APWA is using. [click/enter, to bring up first 3 bullets & graphics] The three you see here are open to the general public, in other words they can be viewed and used by non-members and your city’s general population as well as by APWA members. I encourage you to take a look at wearepublicworks.org and consider subscribing. You might also consider following us on Twitter, if you like how that system works. Or becoming an APWA fan on Facebook. [click/enter, to bring up the last bullet] Of course the best way to build your public network will always be thru face-to-face interaction. Your local chapter events provide a great way to meet other public works professionals and those providing products and services to them. Visit the Events section of the APWA website or your chapter’s website for more info about upcoming activities. [click/enter, to next slide]
  17. APWA is also a great source for career information. The APWA WorkZone, and CPWA WorkZone for those in the Northern part of the continent, provide job seekers with listings and e-mail notifications to streamline the job search. And for employers we’ve made posting of job openings quick and easy and employers can run the announcement in the Reporter magazine too for increased exposure. 19. If you’re looking for a larger scale recognition of excellence, let’s say to verify the quality of your public works agency, division or special district, then Agency Accreditation is the program to pursue. [click/enter, to bring up rest of slide] Accreditation begins with a self-motivated assessment of agency policies, practices and procedures compared to those determined to be consistent practices for all agencies. Over 540 individual practices are reviewed, documentation is completed, application is submitted, then a 3-year window opens for your agency to complete any necessary improvements and/or develop any necessary documentation. Then an on-site evaluation is conducted by a team of APWA sanctioned public works peers and either accreditation or an extension of time for further improvement is awarded. As of late 2010 there were 66 agencies, serving both large and smaller municipalities, which had completed the process and achieved Accreditation. [click/enter, to next slide]
