Ethanol (CH3CH2OH), or beverage alcohol, is a two-carbon alcohol
that is rapidly distributed in the body and brain. Ethanol alters many
neurochemical systems and has rewarding and addictive properties. It
is the oldest recreational drug and likely contributes to more morbidity,
mortality, and public health costs than all illicit drugs combined. The
5th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders
(DSM-5) integrates alcohol abuse and alcohol dependence into a single
disorder called alcohol use disorder (AUD), with mild, moderate,
and severe subclassifications (American Psychiatric Association, 2013).
In the DSM-5, all types of substance abuse and dependence have been
combined into a single substance use disorder (SUD) on a continuum
from mild to severe. A diagnosis of AUD requires that at least two of
the 11 DSM-5 behaviors be present within a 12-month period (mild
AUD: 2–3 criteria; moderate AUD: 4–5 criteria; severe AUD: 6–11 criteria).
The four main behavioral effects of AUD are impaired control over
drinking, negative social consequences, risky use, and altered physiological
effects (tolerance, withdrawal). This chapter presents an overview
of the prevalence and harmful consequences of AUD in the U.S.,
the systemic nature of the disease, neurocircuitry and stages of AUD,
comorbidities, fetal alcohol spectrum disorders, genetic risk factors, and
pharmacotherapies for AUD.

## Introduction to Eating Disorders
Welcome to this comprehensive presentation on Eating Disorders, a critical and often misunderstood area of mental health. This presentation is designed to provide in-depth knowledge and insights into the various aspects of eating disorders, making it valuable for both postgraduate medical aspirants preparing for the INI-CET and the general public seeking to understand these complex conditions.
### Objectives:
1. **Understanding Eating Disorders**: Gain a clear understanding of what eating disorders are, their types, and their distinguishing characteristics.
2. **Etiology and Risk Factors**: Explore the underlying causes and risk factors that contribute to the development of eating disorders.
3. **Clinical Features and Diagnosis**: Learn about the clinical features, diagnostic criteria, and the importance of early detection.
4. **Management and Treatment**: Review the current approaches to managing and treating eating disorders, including medical, psychological, and nutritional interventions.
5. **Prevention and Awareness**: Discuss strategies for prevention, early intervention, and increasing awareness about eating disorders.
This presentation aims to bridge the gap between academic knowledge and practical understanding, providing you with the tools to recognize, diagnose, and effectively manage eating disorders. Whether you are preparing for a medical exam or seeking to educate yourself or others about these serious conditions, this presentation will equip you with essential information and practical insights.
Let's begin our journey into understanding eating disorders and the significant impact they have on individuals and society.

US E-cigarette Summit: Taming the nicotine industrial complexClive Bates
I look back to 1997 and simpler time in tobacco control, then look at changes in trade, communications, technology and conclude the market is becoming ungovernable
2. The source of health & disease – not material
but spiritual – immaterial life principle
immaterial life principle – coordinated with
body and mind in human organisms
Health & disease – not 2 different states, but
qualitative states.
3. Life provides – body & mind – sensations &
functions
Alteration of sensations & functions –
qualitative state of life principle (not material
plane)
Any agent – some inherent quality to affect life
principle – MORBIFIC AGENT
4. Morbific agent – concrete reality & quality is abstraction
In universe, no quality exists so it embodies some
substance
Comes in contact – organismal body – action & reaction
takes place b/w them
With out interchange of material parts of substance
DYNAMIC ACTION - Qualitative process of
interaction & intercommunication
5. Biologically, this qualitative process –
INFECTION
In this way, the natural morbific agent, drug
produced disease condition in an organism –
alter through a kind of infection
6. Example: magnet – iron
Not by interchange of molecules between them
But transmitting some imperceptible energy & changing
the property of soft iron
Similarly in the case of drug…..
Qualitative interchange takes place b/w drug &
organism
Organism – changed qualitatively pertaining to specific
quality of drug
Distinguishing dynamic action from
mechanical / chemico - physical action
7. Same thing – disease – natural morbific agent
So, disease is not a separate objective entity lying hidden
in the interior of the organism.
It is changed qualitative state of organism
Therefore, ntg can be added out/takem out of the disease
but only state of the health of the ndividual is to be
changed
No materia peccans for diseases
8. DYNAMIC PROCESS-
Disease is produced qualitatively & cure is
effected qualitatively
INFECTION:
Drugs & natural morbific agent – through specific
qualitative power – produce alteration in state of health
9. Altered sensations & functions – unchecked – changes
in structure of bodily organs, secretions & excretions –
both qualitatively & quantitatively
Perceptible pathological changes – end products of
morbid vital process – Disease per se
They are not due to exciting & maintaining causes of
disease
10. Disease process – manifested primarily –
dynamic derangement of vital character.
So, anything which affects the life-principle
must do so qualitatively
Medicine – cures disease – same thing.
11. LIFE: Invisible in itself & only cognisible – perceptible
sensations & functions
DISEASE: altered life, known by perceptible sensations
& functions of org- exposed to senses of observer &
physician
Pure empericism. Basis of medicine of experience
SIMILAR BEGININGS MUST HAVE SIMILAR
ENDINGS
12. DRUGS ARE ADMINISTERED TO NATURALLY
DISEASED PERSON
Morbid vital process --- original normal vital process
Pathological changes --- Physiological changes
Structural/ functional states --- healthy state of
individual
Healthy vital force keeps the organs, tissues, parts of
body in physiological state of working
HEALTH
13. Morbid vital process---- original normal
vital process ---altered tissues ---- normal
tissues
To cure a sick individual
14. Disease – not a thing separate from the living
whole, from the organism & its animating vital
process & hidden in the interior of the organism
Diseases are ntg more then alterations in the
state of health of the healthy individual which
express themselves by morbid symptoms
conclusion
15. Cure – only possible by a change to the healthy
condition of the state of health of the disesed
individual
Medicines – could never cure diseases if they
did not possess the power of altering man’s sate
of health which depends on sensations &
functions.
