2. PITUITARY GLAND
• The pituitary gland is a small pea-
sized gland that plays a major role in regulating
vital body functions and general wellbeing. It is
referred to as the body's 'master gland' because
it controls the activity of most other hormone-
secreting glands.
• The pituitary gland is located at the base of the
brain, behind the bridge of the nose.

17. Transsphenoidal surgery
• Transsphenoidal surgery is a type of surgery in
which an endoscope or surgical instruments are
inserted into part of the brain by going through the
nose and the sphenoid bone (a butterfly-shaped
bone forming the anterior inferior portion of
the brain case) into the sphenoidal sinus cavity.
• Transsphenoidal surgery is used to
remove tumors of the pituitary gland.
18. Hypophysectomy
• Hypophysectomy is the surgical
removal of the pituitary gland.
• The pituitary gland can be removed
through the nose, or it can be
removed by opening the skull.
