Donna Little is a 39-year-old Indian woman who has a history of substance misuse and has struggled with reunification with her adolescent children over the last 6 years. She was in residential school from the age of 6 to 16 years old. She has a history of domestic violence in her previous relationships. Donna was the youngest of four children in her family. Her parents, siblings, and herself were raised in the same small northern reservation. Both her parents had gone to residential school in the early 1950s, as did her grandfathers and grandmothers on both sides of her family system in the late 1910s. Donna was raised in an environment of violence and mayhem in her early childhood, which she has talked about quite extensively in counseling. Although her parents abused alcohol, she emphasizes repeatedly that her family was quite ceremonial and participated in the big drum feast and singing within the community. When Donna was 6, an Indian agent wearing a red, white, and black checkered jacket gave her candy and took her to the residential school. She never had the opportunity to say good-bye to her mom and dad, who died of tuberculosis while she was in the residential school. Donna reflects on her residential school experience with a despondent look. While in the residential school, she had only one friend she could count on. Her siblings, who were also at the school, were older and thus not allowed to play with her or sleep near her at the residence dorms. This created an incredible loneliness that Donna did not know how to fill, and often she would use alcohol to help numb that pain. She did not like to drink, but it helped her to stop her thinking badly about the past. Donna was a victim of sexual abuse in the residential school, primarily by the Roman Catholic priest who was in charge. The first time she was assaulted she was 7; the last assault occurred right before she ran away at age 16. When Donna had attempted to tell the head nun in charge of her dorm what was happening to her, she was beaten severely, to the point of unconsciousness. Donna recalls it was her friend, Sue, who nursed her back to health. Donna describes her life as difficult. She went home to her community, only to find a partner who turned out to be as violent toward her as her father was to her mother. She loves her children and cares for them deeply. She breast-fed her three children and still today can feel that connection to them. When her children were taken from her home after the last time her husband beat her, she spiraled out of control. Case Study: Alana
Alana is a 10-year-old female and is in the 4th grade. Before this school year began, you heard about Alana in the staff lounge from teachers who had worked with the child and her family previously. You read Alana’s file and learned that her parents divorced 3 years ago. Alana has attended and left your school and now is back for the third time. The school nurse shared with you that Alana was born premature, weighing 4 pounds, and was diagnosed with fetal alcohol syndrome disorder. Alana suffers from occasional petit mal seizures, for which she is on medication. She is still small for her age, has a low second grade vocabulary, and minimal math skills. A resource aide spends 2 hours each day in the classroom assisting her.
During the first few weeks of the school year, the teacher attempted to phone the house to speak with Alana’s mom and the phone calls were not returned. The resource aide went to the home one time and said that although loud music was playing inside and there were “young hoodlums” on the steps of the home, the mother did not answer the door. The boys said she is sleeping and will not come to the door. The aide reported that the boys said Alana is the only child, they are cousins, and they go to school when they want to because there is no adult around during the day to make them do differently. The boys said they sometimes watch Alana at night when the mom has to go out.
It is now November and the teacher and resource aide are more worried about Alana. Case study 1:
Brandy is a Caucasian girl, who just celebrated her sixth birthday, and is one of the youngest kids in her
first-grade class. Most of the school year has gone fairly well, but she lately has been having trouble at
school. Last week she disrupted class and threw her pencil across the room.
The teacher explained to the parents that she has been a bit “emotional” lately, but did not know why. Her
mom wondered if it was because she has recently transitioned from graduate school to a new job that
keeps her away from home a bit more than before.
Brandy generally likes school, but gets pulled out once or twice a week for special speech therapy as she
occasionally has some problems with a lisp. Her parents were hesitant about Brandy being pulled out of
class, but when she reported she was getting picked on at school by some classmates, they agreed to the
speech therapy.
At home, she has a supportive family and siblings (younger and older) with whom she gets along well.
Occasionally she will get into trouble for lying, but most often feels pretty badly about it once she is caught.
Her father also has a master’s degree with a full-time job, and she and her siblings attend an after-school
daycare program for a couple hours. She plays with the neighborhood kids and her siblings; however
sometimes Brandy has communication struggles with others due to her lisp. She loves sports, and just
finished playing soccer and is set to start t-ball within the next week or two.
Case study 2:
Brandon is an African-American eight-year-old child in third grade, who is in danger of having to repeat the
grade. He continues to struggle with being able to concentrate in class, and says he is “bored” when
students have to just sit and read; sometimes he talks and walks around the class and other times he draws
pictures and pays no attention at all. He frequently gets sent to the principal’s office for this behavior, but
does not seem to mind because the principal lets him play and gives him snacks (as he always complains
about being hungry). Often the principal compliments him on his artwork.
When his parents were told about his behavior, they were exasperated. The parents said he behaves even
more poorly at home, stealing and breaking his siblings’ things and sneaking food into his room. He even
has nightly bed-wetting accidents on a fairly regular basis (the doctor has ruled out physical problems as a
reason for these).
His mother works a part-time job at a local gas station when the kids are in school. His father used to come
home around dinnertime and was often tired; but he was recently laid off and is depressed and spends a lot
of time in bed.

Discussion 1: Classism
Income and wages are measurable indicators of how prosperity is distributed amongst social class. Wealth, often determined by an individual's net worth (assets minus liabilities), is another indicator that is used to determine class. Wealth for working class families is measured by their cars, savings, and home. As people improve their social and economic standing, wealth may include things like stocks and bonds, commercial real estate, and expensive jewelry.
Wealth is an important indicator because it spans past, present, and future generations. For example, compare the children of parents who can save money and leave an inheritance with children of parents who economically struggle and have few assets to pass on to the next generation. Historically, the creation and accumulation of wealth provides evidence of the legacy of racism, sexism, and discrimination and their role in determining class. Black/African Americans, women, and Hispanic/Latinos have historically been denied the means to obtain assets and grow wealth. Consider the impact of chronic marginalization on the Black/African American community's ability to build wealth. While the income gaps between various ethnic groups may be decreasing, the gap between assets remains wide. Data from the Pew Research center show that the median wealth of Caucasian households is 20 times that of Black/African American households and 18 times that of Hispanic/Latinos households in the U.S. (Pew Research Center, 2011).
Class extends beyond wealth and other financial indicators. Class also includes details like the amount of free time you enjoy (because you are not working three jobs to make ends meet) or feeling like there is a "right" way to speak and act in order to be heard. For this Discussion, analyze how classism has impacted your life.

At a primary school at which I substitute I asked an English teacher if there was a project I could do with an individual or a group. Later in the day she told me there was a 4th grader named Daniel who had joined the school after the start of the year, and also joined a class where the teacher had a leave of absence. I was actually Daniel’s substitute teacher a few days, and I know more about substitute teaching now. I was unaware he was having problems. The teacher told me Daniel was seeing a speech therapist later in the week, but she would let me work with him to test one of the hypotheses they had about him. This was that he was unusually weak in phonics, which is the relation between sounds and letters. She gave me some books and pages of materials to look at. I came back the next day and was introduced to him in an empty classroom. We got a couple of chairs and sat at the corner of a table so that he was next to me but around the corner. Behind us was a row of windows which was nice because some of the classrooms had no windows. The sun was shining in. He seemed shy. He didn’t know me. He didn’t know why this was happening.

When difficult issues or conflicts arise, it can be challenging to communicate effectively and reach an outcome that honors each person's perspective. Professionals who work with infants, toddlers, and their families can benefit from practicing dialogue skills to become more confident and receptive when challenging issues emerge. As you read the following scenario, think about each individual's perspective and reflect on the information you have read about communication this week.
Danna is 11 months old and has been coming to this childcare center since she was 4 months old. She has adapted well to the program from the beginning, and enjoys all times of day, including naptime.
One morning, Danna arrives at the center carrying a well-loved blanket bunny (a small blanket that has the head of a bunny attached to it). This is the first time Danna has brought the blanket with her to the center, though it looks like she has carried it around quite a bit at home. Maria, Danna's mother, wants to talk with Danna's primary caregiver, Joelle, about the blanket but several families have arrived at the same time and Joelle is very busy. Maria knows that many children need comfort objects and thinks that Danna may need some extra nurturing today because she has been spending more of her time at home caring for an elderly family member and has not been able to spend as much time with Danna. It is difficult to leave, but she cannot stay any longer.
Joelle notices that Danna's movements around the center seem more unsteady with the blanket in tow, and also that the blanket is getting dirty. As Danna pulls to a stand, she holds the blanket bunny between her teeth, sucking on a place where it is very dirty. This concerns Joelle and so a few times throughout the day, Joelle suggests to Danna that she leave her blanket but Danna becomes upset.
Concerned that this is a health and safety issue and aware that she has never seen this blanket before, she decides to talk with Maria about the blanket bunny when she arrives to pick up Danna.
As Maria heads to the center to pick up Danna, she is hoping to learn how her daughter's day went. She wonders if Danna needed extra nurturing, and if the blanket helped.

A 4-year-old girl named Wadja, who is a recent immigrant from Afghanistan, recently enrolled in the early childhood care center near a U.S. military base. Wadja will be placed in Miss Shauna’s class. Miss Shauna has read about Afghanistani culture, has seen many acts of violence on the news taking place in Afghanistan, and is worried about the class accepting Wadja and how she will adjust to her new environment.
Upon meeting the family and Wadja, Miss Shauna realized that she was very well adjusted, a bit shy, but was becoming more curious about the other children. After a few weeks, Miss Shauna noticed that Wadja started to take her headscarf off after her parents dropped her off in the morning. Wadja also seemed a bit self-conscious about the food her parents packed for her, resulting in Wadja sitting alone or sometimes saying she was not hungry and did not want to eat.
Many of the children in Miss Shauna’s classroom have relatives who are serving in the military, with some stationed in Afghanistan. One boy in class told Wadja that his uncle killed people in Afghanistan. One of the other children recently made a comment directed toward Wadja that “all Muslims are bad.” He later revealed that he had heard his grandfather say this a few times recently.

Diversity in Early Care and Education by Janet Gonzalez-Mena is a published book that is helpful to individuals partaking in courses related to education and human services. In chapter 1, Perceiving and Responding to Differences, the author gives us the opportunity to understand our culture and its effect on our children. She also offers several examples of teachers’ actions eachers do that unconsciously affect culture. For instance, Maria Danna’s mother believes that many children need comfort things hence gives Danna a blanket yet without communication (Gonzalez-Mena & Gonzalez-Mena, 2008). It indicts a conflict since Joel the caregiver feels the blanket is dirty and might affect Danna’s health. In chapter two, Communicating across Cultures, the author stresses on the fact that we supposed to get a bigger picture, have the understanding of every culture and get educated on cross-culture communication without forgetting our philosophies (Morrison, 1988). Working With Children and Adolescents: The Case of Dalia
Dalia is a 14-year-old, biracial female of African and Irish American descent who resides with her parents in a middle-class suburb. She is the youngest of three children and is currently the only child remaining in the home. Dalia’s parents have been married for 25 years. Dalia’s father works in the creative arts field with a nontraditional work schedule that has him gone overnight and sleeping late into the morning. Dalia’s mother is an executive who works long hours. Dalia was diagnosed with sickle cell anemia in early childhood and was hospitalized multiple times. At present, Dalia’s health is stable with the last serious episode occurring 2 years ago.
Dalia’s parents reported that until middle school, Dalia was an easygoing, good-natured youngster who enjoyed singing and participating in activities with her peers and family. Dalia denied any problems with drugs or alcohol but admitted to drinking with friends. Dalia described her family relationships as tense, stating, “My dad lets me do what I want” and “My mother is always trying to control me.” Dalia described her relationship with her older brother, who lives in another state, as “cool,” and her relationship with her older sister, a college sophomore, as “not cool.”
Dalia’s parents sought out counseling services for behavioral issues on the recommendation of her school. The issues included argumentative behavior with authority figures, physical altercations with peers, poor concentration in class, irritable mood, verbal combativeness when confronted, truancy, and highly sexualized behavior with male peers. At home, Dalia had become more argumentative and physically threatening. Her parents had discovered that she and her friends drank alcohol in their home. Dalia’s parents also reported that she was up most of the night and slept most of the day. They also reported that her mood was highly irritable and that she was extremely impulsive. She had no interest in getting involved with any extracurricular activities, stating that those things are “corny and boring.”
In the first meeting, Dalia and her mother both appeared agitated with each other and became argumentative when going through the intake information. Dalia quickly told me that she was not planning to talk about anything because this meeting was her parents’ idea. She stated, “I don’t have any problems, my parents do.” Soon into this first visit, Dalia blurted out that her mother was upset with her because she had just shown her a tattoo she had had done recently, purchased by using a fake ID. I acknowledged her news and asked if this was the way that she usually shared important information with her mother. Dalia shrugged and stated, “I don’t know. I figure I better her tell her now.

Perhaps she had neglected Brandi or missed important warning signs. She would ground Brandi, but more importantly, she would pay much closer attention to whom she befriended and where she went. Natalie decided she would establish a schedule where she would help the girls’ do their homework.
Natalie felt tired. After all the years of guidance and parenting, how could “two stupid tweens” undo all her hard work? She felt she had worked hard teaching Brandi and Jenny how to make good decisions and to know right from wrong. She worried what the next ten years would bring. She pondered the possibilities of other peer influences, alcohol, drugs, and boys.

Nine-year-old Wanda's teacher notices that for the past few weeks, Wanda has not been talking to her friends and is always sitting alone in a corner. After talking to Wanda's friends, the teacher finds out that Wanda's sixteen-year-old brother was killed in a gang fight two months ago and her parents have since separated. The teacher talks to her friend Daphne, a counselor, to see if there is anything she can do about Wanda. She wants to know if there is any way in which children and families affected by exposure to violence can be assisted with emotional impact of these events. The teacher also asks Daphne, in the role of a counselor, to call Wanda's parents to see if they would be willing to talk with her about the death of their son, their separation, and Wanda's behavior at school. Daphne is not employed or affiliated with the school.

Case Study of Donna Little - Chapter 5
Donna Little is a 39-year-old Indian woman who has a history of substance misuse and has struggled with reunification with her adolescent children over the last 6 years. She was in residential school from the age of 6 to 16 years old. She has a history of domestic violence in her previous relationships. Donna was the youngest of four children in her family. Her parents, siblings, and herself were raised in the same small northern reservation. Both her parents had gone to residential school in the early 1950s, as did her grandfathers and grandmothers on both sides of her family system in the late 1910s. Donna was raised in an environment of violence and mayhem in her early childhood, which she has talked about quite extensively in counseling. Although her parents abused alcohol, she emphasizes repeatedly that her family was quite ceremonial and participated in the big drum feast and singing within the community. When Donna was 6, an Indian agent wearing a red, white, and black checkered jacket gave her candy and took her to the residential school. She never had the opportunity to say good-bye to her mom and dad, who died of tuberculosis while she was in the residential school. Donna reflects on her residential school experience with a despondent look. While in the residential school, she had only one friend she could count on. Her siblings, who were also at the school, were older and thus not allowed to play with her or sleep near her at the residence dorms. This created an incredible loneliness that Donna did not know how to fill, and often she would use alcohol to help numb that pain. She did not like to drink, but it helped her to stop her thinking badly about the past. Donna was a victim of sexual abuse in the residential school, primarily by the Roman Catholic priest who was in charge. The first time she was assaulted she was 7; the last assault occurred right before she ran away at age 16. When Donna had attempted to tell the head nun in charge of her dorm what was happening to her, she was beaten severely, to the point of unconsciousness. Donna recalls it was her friend, Sue, who nursed her back to health. Donna describes her life as difficult. She went home to her community, only to find a partner who turned out to be as violent toward her as her father was to her mother. She loves her children and cares for them deeply. She breast-fed her three children and still today can feel that connection to them. When her children were taken from her home after the last time her husband beat her, she spiraled out of control. Donna has had long periods of abstinence, has a home in her community that is well cared for, and now has a partner who loves her deeply. Case Study: Alana
Alana is a 10-year-old female and is in the 4th grade. Before this school year began, you heard about Alana in the staff lounge from teachers who had worked with the child and her family previously. You read Alana’s file and learned that her parents divorced 3 years ago. Alana has attended and left your school and now is back for the third time. The school nurse shared with you that Alana was born premature, weighing 4 pounds, and was diagnosed with fetal alcohol syndrome disorder. Alana suffers from occasional petit mal seizures, for which she is on medication. She is still small for her age, has a low second grade vocabulary, and minimal math skills. A resource aide spends 2 hours each day in the classroom assisting her.
During the first few weeks of the school year, the teacher attempted to phone the house to speak with Alana’s mom and the phone calls were not returned. Case study 1:
Brandy is a Caucasian girl, who just celebrated her sixth birthday, and is one of the youngest kids in her
first-grade class. Most of the school year has gone fairly well, but she lately has been having trouble at
school. Last week she disrupted class and threw her pencil across the room.
The teacher explained to the parents that she has been a bit “emotional” lately, but did not know why. Her
mom wondered if it was because she has recently transitioned from graduate school to a new job that
keeps her away from home a bit more than before.
Brandy generally likes school, but gets pulled out once or twice a week for special speech therapy as she
occasionally has some problems with a lisp. Her parents were hesitant about Brandy being pulled out of
class, but when she reported she was getting picked on at school by some classmates, they agreed to the
speech therapy.
At home, she has a supportive family and siblings (younger and older) with whom she gets along well.
Occasionally she will get into trouble for lying, but most often feels pretty badly about it once she is caught.
Her father also has a master’s degree with a full-time job, and she and her siblings attend an after-school
daycare program for a couple hours. She plays with the neighborhood kids and her siblings; however
sometimes Brandy has communication struggles with others due to her lisp. She loves sports, and just
finished playing soccer and is set to start t-ball within the next week or two.
Case study 2:
Brandon is an African-American eight-year-old child in third grade, who is in danger of having to repeat the
grade. He continues to struggle with being able to concentrate in class, and says he is “bored” when
students have to just sit and read; sometimes he talks and walks around the class and other times he draws
pictures and pays no attention at all. He frequently gets sent to the principal’s office for this behavior, but
does not seem to mind because the principal lets him play and gives him snacks (as he always complains
about being hungry). Often the principal compliments him on his artwork.
When his parents were told about his behavior, they were exasperated. The parents said he behaves even
more poorly at home, stealing and breaking his siblings’ things and sneaking food into his room. He even
has nightly bed-wetting accidents on a fairly regular basis (the doctor has ruled out physical problems as a
reason for these).
His mother works a part-time job at a local gas station when the kids are in school. His father used to come
home around dinnertime and was often tired; but he was recently laid off and is depressed and spends a lot
of time in bed.

Discussion 1: Classism
Income and wages are measurable indicators of how prosperity is distributed amongst social class. Wealth, often determined by an individual's net worth (assets minus liabilities), is another indicator that is used to determine class. Wealth for working class families is measured by their cars, savings, and home. As people improve their social and economic standing, wealth may include things like stocks and bonds, commercial real estate, and expensive jewelry.
Wealth is an important indicator because it spans past, present, and future generations. For example, compare the children of parents who can save money and leave an inheritance with children of parents who economically struggle and have few assets to pass on to the next generation. Historically, the creation and accumulation of wealth provides evidence of the legacy of racism, sexism, and discrimination and their role in determining class. Black/African Americans, women, and Hispanic/Latinos have historically been denied the means to obtain assets and grow wealth. Consider the impact of chronic marginalization on the Black/African American community's ability to build wealth. While the income gaps between various ethnic groups may be decreasing, the gap between assets remains wide. Data from the Pew Research center show that the median wealth of Caucasian households is 20 times that of Black/African American households and 18 times that of Hispanic/Latinos households in the U.S. (Pew Research Center, 2011).
Class extends beyond wealth and other financial indicators. At a primary school at which I substitute I asked an English teacher if there was a project I could do with an individual or a group. Later in the day she told me there was a 4th grader named Daniel who had joined the school after the start of the year, and also joined a class where the teacher had a leave of absence. I was actually Daniel’s substitute teacher a few days, and I know more about substitute teaching now. I was unaware he was having problems. The teacher told me Daniel was seeing a speech therapist later in the week, but she would let me work with him to test one of the hypotheses they had about him. This was that he was unusually weak in phonics, which is the relation between sounds and letters. She gave me some books and pages of materials to look at. I came back the next day and was introduced to him in an empty classroom. We got a couple of chairs and sat at the corner of a table so that he was next to me but around the corner. Behind us was a row of windows which was nice because some of the classrooms had no windows. The sun was shining in. He seemed shy. He didn’t know me. He didn’t know why this was happening.

When difficult issues or conflicts arise, it can be challenging to communicate effectively and reach an outcome that honors each person's perspective. Professionals who work with infants, toddlers, and their families can benefit from practicing dialogue skills to become more confident and receptive when challenging issues emerge. As you read the following scenario, think about each individual's perspective and reflect on the information you have read about communication this week.
Danna is 11 months old and has been coming to this childcare center since she was 4 months old. She has adapted well to the program from the beginning, and enjoys all times of day, including naptime.
One morning, Danna arrives at the center carrying a well-loved blanket bunny (a small blanket that has the head of a bunny attached to it). This is the first time Danna has brought the blanket with her to the center, though it looks like she has carried it around quite a bit at home. Maria, Danna's mother, wants to talk with Danna's primary caregiver, Joelle, about the blanket but several families have arrived at the same time and Joelle is very busy. Maria knows that many children need comfort objects and thinks that Danna may need some extra nurturing today because she has been spending more of her time at home caring for an elderly family member and has not been able to spend as much time with Danna. It is difficult to leave, but she cannot stay any longer.
Joelle notices that Danna's movements around the center seem more unsteady with the blanket in tow, and also that the blanket is getting dirty. As Danna pulls to a stand, she holds the blanket bunny between her teeth, sucking on a place where it is very dirty. This concerns Joelle and so a few times throughout the day, Joelle suggests to Danna that she leave her blanket but Danna becomes upset.
Concerned that this is a health and safety issue and aware that she has never seen this blanket before, she decides to talk with Maria about the blanket bunny when she arrives to pick up Danna.
As Maria heads to the center to pick up Danna, she is hoping to learn how her daughter's day went. She wonders if Danna needed extra nurturing, and if the blanket helped.

Upon meeting the family and Wadja, Miss Shauna realized that she was very well adjusted, a bit shy, but was becoming more curious about the other children. After a few weeks, Miss Shauna noticed that Wadja started to take her headscarf off after her parents dropped her off in the morning. Wadja also seemed a bit self-conscious about the food her parents packed for her, resulting in Wadja sitting alone or sometimes saying she was not hungry and did not want to eat.
Many of the children in Miss Shauna’s classroom have relatives who are serving in the military, with some stationed in Afghanistan. One boy in class told Wadja that his uncle killed people in Afghanistan. Diversity in Early Care and Education by Janet Gonzalez-Mena is a published book that is helpful to individuals partaking in courses related to education and human services. In chapter 1, Perceiving and Responding to Differences, the author gives us the opportunity to understand our culture and its effect on our children. She also offers several examples of teachers’ actions eachers do that unconsciously affect culture. For instance, Maria Danna’s mother believes that many children need comfort things hence gives Danna a blanket yet without communication (Gonzalez-Mena & Gonzalez-Mena, 2008). It indicts a conflict since Joel the caregiver feels the blanket is dirty and might affect Danna’s health. In chapter two, Communicating across Cultures, the author stresses on the fact that we supposed to get a bigger picture, have the understanding of every culture and get educated on cross-culture communication without forgetting our philosophies (Morrison, 1988). Working With Children and Adolescents: The Case of Dalia
Dalia is a 14-year-old, biracial female of African and Irish American descent who resides with her parents in a middle-class suburb. She is the youngest of three children and is currently the only child remaining in the home. Dalia’s parents have been married for 25 years. Dalia’s father works in the creative arts field with a nontraditional work schedule that has him gone overnight and sleeping late into the morning. Dalia’s mother is an executive who works long hours. Dalia was diagnosed with sickle cell anemia in early childhood and was hospitalized multiple times. At present, Dalia’s health is stable with the last serious episode occurring 2 years ago.
Dalia’s parents reported that until middle school, Dalia was an easygoing, good-natured youngster who enjoyed singing and participating in activities with her peers and family. Dalia denied any problems with drugs or alcohol but admitted to drinking with friends. Dalia described her family relationships as tense, stating, “My dad lets me do what I want” and “My mother is always trying to control me.” Dalia described her relationship with her older brother, who lives in another state, as “cool,” and her relationship with her older sister, a college sophomore, as “not cool.”
Dalia’s parents sought out counseling services for behavioral issues on the recommendation of her school. The issues included argumentative behavior with authority figures, physical altercations with peers, poor concentration in class, irritable mood, verbal combativeness when confronted, truancy, and highly sexualized behavior with male peers. At home, Dalia had become more argumentative and physically threatening. Her parents had discovered that she and her friends drank alcohol in their home. Dalia’s parents also reported that she was up most of the night and slept most of the day. They also reported that her mood was highly irritable and that she was extremely impulsive. She had no interest in getting involved with any extracurricular activities, stating that those things are “corny and boring.”
In the first meeting, Dalia and her mother both appeared agitated with each other and became argumentative when going through the intake information. Dalia quickly told me that she was not planning to talk about anything because this meeting was her parents’ idea. She stated, “I don’t have any problems, my parents do.” Soon into this first visit, Dalia blurted out that her mother was upset with her because she had just shown her a tattoo she had had done recently, purchased by using a fake ID. I acknowledged her news and asked if this was the way that she usually shared important information with her mother. Dalia shrugged and stated, “I don’t know. I figure I better her tell her now.

Beethoven is the only composer to whom an entire chapter in our textbook is dedicated. A Strategic Approach: GenAI in Education
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

After talking to Wanda's friends, the teacher finds out that Wanda's sixteen-year-old brother was killed in a gang fight two months ago and her parents have since separated. The teacher talks to her friend Daphne, a counselor, to see if there is anything she can do about Wanda. She wants to know if there is any way in which children and families affected by exposure to violence can be assisted with emotional impact of these events. The teacher also asks Daphne, in the role of a counselor, to call Wanda's parents to see if they would be willing to talk with her about the death of their son, their separation, and Wanda's behavior at school. Daphne is not employed or affiliated with the school. What would be Daphne's role, as a counselor, in helping the teacher? What do you see as important roles of a counselor working in a community?
