In most criminal justice systems, a felony is a crime that may be punished by 1 year or more of incarceration (Wright, 2013). In most cases individuals convicted of a felony are incarcerated in prison (Wright, 2013). Felony is a serious crime, characterized under federal law and many state statues as any offense punishable by death or imprisonment (West’s Encyclopedia of American Law Edition 2, 2008).
A misdemeanor is a crime that may be punished by no more than 1 year of incarceration (Wright, 2013). The individuals convicted of misdemeanors usually serve their time in jails (Wright, 2013). Misdemeanor is offenses lower than felonies and generally those punishable by fine, penalty, forfeiture, or imprisonment other than in a penitentiary (West’s Encyclopedia of American Law Edition 2, 2008).
The differences between a felony and misdemeanor charge is that a person is punished for the offenses committed one serves time in a prison for more than one year and the other serves time in a jail for no more than a year. These charges are used to classify where the criminal is punished and where the sentence will take them.

Self-representation is where if a case is a sample, an individual can represent themselves. It is also referred to as proceed pro se. The court discourages since legal practices need special skills. An unskilled self-representation party is normally at the disadvantage of the court. It is clear that self-representation is where a person represents himself if the case is simple while the right to counsel is where a defendant is given a constitutional right to the Sixth Amendment to the American Constitution to be represented by an attorney during his/her trial (Reinhart, 2016). There are some dangers of self-representation. One of them is these risk of getting convicted or sent to prison. If you do not have knowledge of law or understand your rights, you are likely to confuse yourself and end up in jail. In my opinion, self-representation can be dangerous to the defendant and the court. The rights of the defendant can be infringed if he/she does not understand them (Reinhart, 2016).

For many people their first experience with a court hearing is from watching a fictional crime television show or movie. Often in the movies we will hear many Latin terms such as modes operandi, quid pro quo, mens rea, and actus rea. These terms have become synonymous with the legal and crime dramas shown on television, but they actually have real meanings in court proceedings. A crime is broken into three elements or parts, the three are the criminal act, the criminal intent, and the concurrence of the two. Mens rea is the term used for the criminal intent of a crime and Actus rea is the term used for the criminal act of a crime. In criminal proceedings the prosecutor must prove mens rea to be successful. The criminal act or actus rea is the "unlawful bodily movement" which is performed voluntarily (Storm, 2012). Mens rea is the criminal intent of a crime and is the basis for punishment when prosecuting crimes, as the worse crime will have the most servere punishments associates with them. Mens rea is ranked in three categories the first being malice aforethought or the intent to kill, the second being specific intent which is the cause a specific action, and lastly general intent which is the intent to commit a crime. Though mens rea and actus rea are both tied directly to a crime they do have specific differences. If we look a situation of one student stealing another students jacket from their locker in school the criminal act, actus rea, is the taking of someone else's property while the criminal intent, mens rea, would be with the intent to permanently deprive the other student of their property. Motive is not an element of a criminal case,e however it does play a ole in criminal cases. Motive is commonly referred to as the reason person committed an act. Motive is the reason a person committed the criminal act and can be used to determine sentencing for example if a John is at a local bar and punches another man for dancing with his girlfriend, John's motive was anger or jealously, while his intent was to cause bodily harm resulting in the criminal act of battery. As a result of this example John may be subject to a harsher punishment then if in the same scenario the John missed his punch and the other man struck John in self defense. Proving mens rea vice motive is beneficial to the criminal justice system because in order to prove motive you must be able to successful explain what a person is feeling and thinking at the time of a crime and that would prove extremely difficult where proving mens rea can easily by explained by showing a person committed criminal intent by either acting recklessly or by engaging in an action that they knowingly or can be knowingly assumed by a reasonable person to cause harm.

Aileen Wuornos was a real-life female serial killer. As a child, her father was convicted of sexually abusing children and killed himself in prison. At one point he was diagnosed as schizophrenic. Wuornus was abandoned by her mother at four years old and forced to live with her abusive grandparents. After having a baby at 14 she was kicked out of her grandparent’s home and lived on the streets as a prostitute. Wuornos was convicted of six life sentences for killing men she accused of either raping her or attempting to rape her.
Based on your reading this week, define, in your own words, forensic psychology as a specific example of applied behavioral science, and describe how forensic psychology could have been helpful in this case.
“Forensic psychology is a field of study that applies scientific psychological knowledge to legal issues pertaining to criminal offenders and the criminal justice system. Identify trends in forensic psychology that would prove helpful” (McCarthy et al, 2016, section 6.1). I would define it as the application and education of reliable scientific psychology in the criminal justice system. Forensic psychologist can evaluate human behaviors and based on scientifically reliable assessments determine the dangerousness to a person’s self or society at large. The can also look for common diagnosis to determine if a person is fit to stand trial. In the case of Wuornus, a forensic psychologist could have examined her RAP sheet to determine if she was a threat to society. She was arrested for several crimes, including armed robbery and assault. In the biosocial age, criminologist now have access to genetic and brain imaging data. I think it would have been worth assessing her for schizophrenia. She stated that the men she killed either raped her or attempted to rape her until she was executed. Paranoia is common in schizophrenics and some believed she was convinced that she was raped or about to be raped. In her mind the murders were justified.

sons with broadswords, the party moved on to kill two other men, leaving one with his skull
crushed, a hand severed and his body in Pottawatomie Creek.
In a sense, the five proslavery settlers were casualties not merely of Brown's bloody-mindedness
but also of a law described by historians William and Bruce Catton as possibly "the most fateful
single piece of legislation in American history." Ironically, the Kansas-Nebraska Act, passed by
Congress 150 years ago this month (100 years to the week before the landmark Supreme Court
decision--Brown v. Board of Education--barring school segregation), was meant to quiet the
furious national argument over slavery by letting the new Western territories decide whether to
accept the practice, without the intrusion of the federal government. Yet by repealing the Missouri
Compromise of 1820, which had outlawed slavery everywhere in the Louisiana Purchase north of
Missouri's southern border (except for Missouri itself), the new law inflamed the emotions it was

These factors were never brought up at trial by the defendant's previous defense team because they wanted to focus on mitigating circumstances surrounding the crime that was committed rather than confusing the issue with too many different defenses.

One hundred fifty years ago, the Kansas-Nebraska Act set the stage for America's civil
war
Abolitionist John Brown--failed businessman, sometime farmer and fulltime agent, he believed, of
a God more disposed to retribution than mercy--rode into the Pottawatomie Valley in the new
territory of Kansas on May 24, 1856, intent on imposing "a restraining fear" on his proslavery
neighbors. With him were seven men, including four of his sons. An hour before midnight, Brown
came to the cabin of a Tennessee emigrant named James Doyle, took him prisoner despite the
pleadings of Doyle's desperate wife, and shot him dead. After butchering Doyle and two of his
sons with broadswords, the party moved on to kill two other men, leaving one with his skull
crushed, a hand severed and his body in Pottawatomie Creek.
In a sense, the five proslavery settlers were casualties not merely of Brown's bloody-mindedness
but also of a law described by historians William and Bruce Catton as possibly "the most fateful
single piece of legislation in American history." Ironically, the Kansas-Nebraska Act, passed by
Congress 150 years ago this month (100 years to the week before the landmark Supreme Court
decision--Brown v. Board of Education--barring school segregation), was meant to quiet the
furious national argument over slavery by letting the new Western territories decide whether to
accept the practice, without the intrusion of the federal government. Yet by repealing the Missouri
Compromise of 1820, which had outlawed slavery everywhere in the Louisiana Purchase north of
Missouri's southern border (except for Missouri itself), the new law inflamed the emotions it was
intended to calm and wrenched the country apart.
As a result of the legislation's passage, resentments became bloody hostilities, the Democratic
Party lay shattered, a new Republican Party was created and an Illinois lawyer named Abraham
Lincoln embarked on the road to the presidency. Had the law made civil war unavoidable? "I'd
put it this way," says historian George B. Forgie of the University of Texas. "Whatever the
chances of avoiding disunion before Kansas-Nebraska, they fell dramatically as a result of it."

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

This is a presentation by Dada Robert in a Your Skill Boost masterclass organised by the Excellence Foundation for South Sudan (EFSS) on Saturday, the 25th and Sunday, the 26th of May 2024.
He discussed the concept of quality improvement, emphasizing its applicability to various aspects of life, including personal, project, and program improvements. He defined quality as doing the right thing at the right time in the right way to achieve the best possible results and discussed the concept of the "gap" between what we know and what we do, and how this gap represents the areas we need to improve. He explained the scientific approach to quality improvement, which involves systematic performance analysis, testing and learning, and implementing change ideas. He also highlighted the importance of client focus and a team approach to quality improvement.
