Rugged OTDR Launch Box
A fibre launch-lead is a vital piece of the field-tester’s equipment, enhancing the OTDR’s ability to
test and profile a complete link. Unfortunately, most commercial offerings fail to fully address the
needs of the tester. Many such offerings are poorly packaged and unsuited to the regular journeys
in the back of the van. Some have no provision for storage of test leads, which must therefore be
unplugged and re-plugged for each use leading to early degradation of the enfaces of both the
test leads and the launch leads themselves. Some present the fibre endfaces on the exterior where
they are vulnerable to dirt and damage and reliant on rigorous replacement of dustcaps to ensure
their continued performance. We’ve even encountered launch boxes marketed as “Rugged” where
a kilometre of fibre is “secured” in the box (out of view of the user) using polythene and sticky
tape.
In contrast, and in response to our customers’ requests, MCL’s Launch Box has been designed
specifically for the environments in which field testers may often find themselves, and offers the
following:
Rugged flight case manufactured by a specialist in the field with over 20 years’ experience.
Test Lead management and storage area.
Fibre stored internally on secure, large-diameter reel.
Low-reflectance SC/APC terminations.
Shuttered adaptors—no caps to lose.
Low-cost, easy-to-replace port savers—no need to send the box for re-termination.*
*An average termination is designed to retain its performance for around 500 insertions—and
that’s in a clean environment. This means that your average launch lead requires re-polishing or re
-terminating by a specialist after a maximum of 500 changes of test lead. In a mixed-connector
test environment, this can happen surprisingly quickly. MCL’s use of low-loss port-savers means
that the launch box can be brought back to practically as-new condition on-site, in seconds, and
for the cost of just a few pounds.
