2. CALL TO WORSHIP SDAH 824
Your body, you know, is the temple of
the holy Spirit, who is in you since you
received him from God.
You are not your own property; you
have been bought and paid for. This why
you should use your body for the glory
of God.
4. Fill My Cup, Lord – SDAH 493
Like a woman at the well I was seeking
For things that could not satisfy
And then I heard my Saviour speaking
“Draw from my well that never shall run
dry”
Fill my cup Lord, I lift it up Lord
Come and quench this thirsting of my soul
Bread of heaven feed me till I want no more
Fill my cup, fill it up and make me whole
5. There are millions in this world who are
craving
The pleasure earthly things afford
But none can match the wondrous treasure
That I find in Jesus Christ, my Lord
Fill my cup Lord, I lift it up Lord
Come and quench this thirsting of my soul
Bread of heaven feed me till I want no more
Fill my cup, fill it up and make me whole
6. So my children if the things this world gave
you
Leave hungers that won’t pass away
My blessed Lord will come and save you
If you kneel to Him and humbly pray
Fill my cup Lord, I lift it up Lord
Come and quench this thirsting of my soul
Bread of heaven feed me till I want no more
Fill my cup, fill it up and make me whole.
10. What a Friend We Have in Jesus – 499
What a friend we have in Jesus,
all our sins and griefs to bear!
What a privilege to carry
everything to God in prayer!
O what peace we often forfeit,
O what needless pain we bear,
all because we do not carry
everything to God in prayer
11. Have we trials and temptations?
Is there trouble anywhere?
We should never be discouraged;
take it to the Lord in prayer.
Can we find a friend so faithful
who will all our sorrows share?
Jesus knows our every
weakness;
take it to the Lord in prayer
12. Are we weak and heavy laden,
cumbered with a load of care?
Precious Saviour, still our refuge;
take it to the Lord in prayer.
Do thy friends despise, forsake
Thee?
Take it to the Lord in prayer!
In His arms He'll take and shield
Thee;
Thou wilt find a solace there.
14. DRUG AWARENESS
Drug Education is the planned provision of
information, resources, and skills relevant to
living in a world where psychoactive
substances are widely available and
commonly used for a variety of both medical
and non-medical purposes, some of which
may lead to harms such as overdose, injury,
infectious disease (such as HIV or hepatitis
C), or addiction.
15. WHAT IS A DRUG?
A drug is a chemical that changes the
way a person's body works.
In pharmacology, a drug is "a chemical
substance used in the treatment, cure,
prevention, or diagnosis of disease or
used to otherwise enhance physical or
mental well-being.
28. DRUG ABUSE
Drug abuse, also called substance abuse or
chemical abuse, is a disorder that is
characterized by a destructive pattern of
using a substance that leads to significant
problems or distress.
Drug abuse may be defined as the
“arbitrary” over dependence or miss-use of
one particular drug with or without a prior
medical diagnosis from qualified health
practitioners. (Lakhanpal, & Agnihotri,
2007). (Oluremi, 2012),
29. LICIT DRUGS
Licit drugs are also known as legal
drugs.
Licit drug usually means that a drug is
used legally.
“Legally use of drugs includes:
a. Medicines used for illness
b. Over-the-counter drugs used as
directed”
30. ILLICIT DRUGS
Illicit drugs are also known as illegal drugs.
Illicit drug use occurs when drugs are used in
an illegal manner. (e.g., heroin). “ Illicit drug
use includes:
Using a drug for an improper purpose
(sleeping pills to get high or pain pills for
relaxation).
Using a product or substance not intended to
be a drug in a way which produces a drug-like
state (glues, petrol) “
31. DRUG ADDICTION
Drug addiction is a chronic, often
relapsing brain disease that causes
compulsive drug seeking and use,
despite harmful consequences to the
drug addict and those around them.
Drug addiction is a brain disease
because the abuse of drugs leads to
changes in the structure and function
of the brain.
32. TYPES OF DRUG ABUSE/ADDICTION
In Nigeria, the most common types of abused
drugs according to NAFDAC (2000) as cited by
Haladu (2003) are categorized as follows:
Stimulants: These are substances that directly
act and stimulate the central nervous system. The
major source of these comes from caffeine
substance
Hallucinogens: These are drugs that alter the
sensory processing unit in the brain. Thus,
producing distorted perception, feeling of anxiety
and euphoria, sadness and inner joy, they
normally come from marijuana, LSD etc.
33. Narcotics: These drugs relive pains, induce
sleeping and they are addictive. They are
found in heroin, codeine, opium etc.
Sedatives: These drugs are among the
most widely used and abused. This is largely
due to the belief that they relieve stress and
anxiety, and some of them induce sleep,
ease tension, cause relaxation or help users
to forget their problems. They are sourced
from valium, alcohol, promotazine,
chloroform.
34. Tranquilizers: They are believed to
produce calmness without bringing
drowsiness, they are chiefly derived from
Librium, Valium etc.
Miscellaneous: This is a group of volatile
solvents or inhalants that provide
euphoria, emotional disinhibition and
perpetual distortion of thought to the
user. The main sources are glues, spot
removers, tube repair, perfumes,
chemicals etc.
35. ADMINISTERING DRUGS
Many drugs can be administered in a variety of
ways rather than just one:
Bolus is the administration of a medication, drug
or other compound that is given to raise its
concentration in blood to an effective level. The
administration can be given intravenously, by
intramuscular, intrathecal or subcutaneous
injection.
Inhaled (breathed into the lungs), as an aerosol
or dry powder.
36. Injected as a solution, suspension or
emulsion either: intramuscular,
intravenous, intraperitoneal,
intraosseous.
Insufflation, or snorted into the nose.
Orally, as a liquid or solid, that is
absorbed through the intestines.
Rectally as a suppository, that is
absorbed by the rectum or colon.
37. Sublingually, diffusing into the blood
through tissues under the tongue.
Topically, usually as a cream or
ointment. A drug administered in this
manner may be given to act locally or
systemically.
Vaginally as a suppository, primarily
to treat vaginal infections.
38. HOW DO DRUGS WORK?
Drugs are essentially poisons. The
amount taken determines the effect.
A small amount acts as a stimulant
(speeds you up). A greater amount acts
as a sedative (slows you down). An even
larger amount poisons and can kill.
39. STATISTICS OF DRUG ABUSE
About 200 million people worldwide
use illegal drugs each year, according to
a new report.
Most are cannabis users (125 to 203
million), followed by amphetamine
users (14 to 56 million), cocaine users
(14 to 21 million) and opioid users (12
to 21 million).
40. Every day in the US, 2,500 youth (12 to
17) abuse a prescription pain reliever
for the first time.
In the US alone, more than 15 million
people abuse prescription drugs.
In 2006 in the United States, 2.6
million people abused prescription
drugs for the first time.
41. Nigeria tops use of illicit drugs in Africa,
United Nations Office on Drugs and
Crime (UNODC) World Report 2011 has
said.
Kano has the country's highest drug
abuse rate based on the number of
seizures, arrests of addicts and
convictions of arrested dealers,
according to the National Drug Law
Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
42. MORTALITY RATE
Illegal drug use causes about a quarter of a
million deaths per year, according to the
report, and use is highest in developed
countries.
Data from the World Health Organization
suggests there were 250,000 deaths
worldwide due to illicit drug use in 2004,
compared with 2.25 million due to alcohol,
and 5.1 million due to tobacco.
43. The increase of drug use and threat of
HIV/AIDS amongst young people
globally are a cause for concern. Young
people between 10-24 years are
estimated to account for up to 60% of
all new HIV infection worldwide
(Fadayomi & Poukouta, 1999).
44. WHY DO PEOPLE TAKE DRUGS?
Here are some of the reasons young people
have given for taking drugs:
Curiosity and Desire to find out the
Effectiveness of a particular drug: Curiosity
to experiment the unknown facts about
drugs thus motivates youth’s into drug use.
Peer group Influence: Peer group pressure
plays a major role in influencing many
youth’s into drug usage.
45. Environment: Many young people live in
communities which suffer from multiple
deprivations, with high unemployment, low
quality housing and where the surrounding
infra-structure of local services is splintered
and poorly resourced.
Promotion and Availability: Alcohol and
pain-relieving drugs are regularly advertised
on television:
Enjoyment.
Lack of Parental Supervision:
46. Pathological family background – broken
homes, illegitimate relationships, alcoholic
parents or parent’s involvement in antisocial
and illegal activities.
Ignorance of the dangers of illegal drug
use.
The Need for Energy to Work for Long
Hours:
Availability of the Drugs: In many countries,
drugs have dropped in prices as supplies
have increased.
47. They think drugs are a solution. But
eventually, the drugs become the
problem.
The consequences of drug use are
always worse than the problem one
is trying to solve with them.
The real answer is to get the facts
and not to take drugs in the first
place.
48. One of the major concerns is that children
seem to be targeted as the new market for
the drug industry globally.
In economic terms, both licit and illicit drugs
are viewed as consumer goods that are
traded in a competitive global market.
Illegal drugs account for at least $400 billion
of world trade marking it larger than the
global iron and steel industries (James,
1999).
61. PHYSICAL SIGNS
Inability to sleep, awake at unusual times,
unusual laziness.
Loss of or increased in appetite, changes in eating
habits
Cold, sweaty palms; shaking hands.
Red, watery eyes; pupils larger or smaller than
usual
Tremors or shakes of hands, feet or head.
Needle marks on lower arm, leg or bottom of
feet. Deterioration of hygiene or physical health
62. BEHAVIORAL SIGNS
• Drop in grades at school or performance at work;
skips school or is late for school.
• Chronic dishonesty.
• Sudden oversensitivity, temper tantrums, or
resentful behavior.
• Difficulty in paying attention; forgetfulness.
General lack of motivation, energy, self-esteem, “I
don’t care” attitude.
• Change in habits at home; loss of interest in
family and family activities.
• Secretive or suspicious behaviuor.
64. Marijuana: Red eyes; loud talking and
inappropriate laughter followed by
sleepiness; loss of interest, motivation;
weight gain or loss.
Alcohol: Difficulty walking; slurred speech;
sleepiness; poor judgment; dilated pupils.
Cocaine, and Other Stimulants:
Hyperactivity; euphoria; irritability; anxiety;
excessive talking excessive sleeping at odd
times; go long periods of time without eating
or sleeping; dilated pupils; weight loss; dry
mouth and nose.
65. Inhalants (Glues, aerosols & vapors):
Watery eyes; impaired vision, memory
and thought; headaches and nausea;
appearance of intoxication; drowsiness;
poor muscle control; anxiety; irritability.
Hallucinogens: Dilated pupils; bizarre and
irrational behavior including paranoia,
aggression, hallucinations; mood swings;
detachment from people, slurred speech;
confusion.
66. CONSEQUENCES
The various consequences of drug
addiction or drug abuse are so
devastating and very shameful to the
extent that both the nation and
international organizations all over the
world are also worried about the spread
of this scourge among the youths and
adolescents and some of these
consequences includes:
67. Mental disorder
Drop out from school
Cultism
Social violence
Internet frauds
Gang formation
Armed robbery
419 syndrome
68. Social miscreants (area boys and girls)
Lawlessness among youths
Lack of respect for elders
Rape
Instant death and wasting of precious
and innocent lives and many more and
loss of senses.
69. THE EFFECTS OF SUBSTANCE ABUSE
1. Alcohol-related problems includes:
Physical problems e. g. liver cirrhosis,
pancreatic, peptic ulcer, tuberculosis,
hypertension, neurological disorder.
Mental retardation for the fetus in the
womb, growth, deficiency, delayed motor
development.
Socially-broken homes, increased crime
rate, sexual offences, homicide and sexually
transmitted diseases.
70. 2. Tobacco:
Causes stimulation of heart and narrowing of
blood vessels, producing hypertension,
headache, loss of appetite, nausea and delayed
growth of the fetus.
It also aggravates or causes sinusitis,
bronchitis, cancer, strokes, and heart attack
Nicotine is the stimulating chemical in
tobacco that makes it addictive. However,
there are also more than 4,000 other
chemicals in tobacco that are also
poisonous!
87. TREATMENT
1. Medications
Medications for substance abuse help the
brain adjust to the absence of the abused
substance. These medications act slowly to
quiet drug cravings and mental agitation.
2. Behavioral Treatments
Behavioral treatments help patients engage in
the treatment process, modify their attitudes
and behaviors related to drug abuse, and
increase healthy life skills.
88. 3. Treatment Within the Criminal Justice
System
Treatment in a criminal justice setting
can succeed in preventing an offender's
return to criminal behavior, particularly
when treatment continues as the
person transitions back into the
community. Studies show that
treatment does not need to be
voluntary to be effective.
89. HOW TO CURB THE MENACE
We are aware that government on its
own has tried in Nigeria to curtail,
eradicate or discourage the use, sale,
trafficking and recycling of illegal drugs
by promulgating various decrees against
such drug use. There is the popular
Anti-narcotic Decree under which the
NDLEA was set up.
90. RECOMMENDATIONS
Parents should sincerely re-orient their
children on the dangers of drug abuse
on their health and others, since charity,
they say begins at home.
National Drug Law Enforcement Agency
must also intensify their anti drug
campaigns in order to have a drug free
society with a special focus on the
youth’s and adolescents.
91. The Ministry of Education (Federal and State)
must add to their curricular a Drug-Education
for both the primary and post primary schools,
along with lectures, seminars, rallies, and film
shows for the youths and adolescents on the
adverse effects of drug abuse.
All the three tiers of Government in Nigeria, the
NGOS and concerned individuals must make
concerted efforts in curbing the spread of the
scourge of drug abuse among our youths and
adolescents through awareness campaign
programs.
92. CONCLUSION
The abuse of drugs and other substances
constitutes one of the most important risk
behaviour among our youths and adolescents
in Nigeria.
All Nigerians have accepted that drug abuse is
undesirable feature of our culture, and it is also
important to emphasize the fact that majority
of our youths and adolescents come from
different backgrounds and that the drug use
and addiction is not restricted to any one social
class.

136. Nothing Between - 322
Nothing between my soul and the Saviour
Naught of this world’s delusive dream
I have renounced all sinful pleasure
Jesus is mine, there’s nothing between
Nothing between my soul and the Saviour
So that His blessed face may be seen
Nothing preventing the least of His favour
Keep the way clear, let nothing between
137. Nothing between like worldly pleasure
Habits of life, though harmless they seem
Must not my heart from Him ever sever
He is my all, there’s nothing between
Nothing between my soul and the
Saviour
So that His blessed face may be seen
Nothing preventing the least of His favour
Keep the way clear, let nothing between
138. Nothing between e’en many hard trials
Though the whole world against me
convene
Watching with prayer and much self denial
Triumph at last, with nothing between
Nothing between my soul and the Saviour
So that His blessed face may be seen
Nothing preventing the least of His favour
Keep the way clear, let nothing between.
