17. 1. What is biodigester technology?
biodigester technology is an ecofriendly human waste disposal technology. it
has two component; fermentation tank and the cold active anaerobic microbial
inoculum (AMI) which is used as seed material. both these components
together carry out biodegradation of human waste quickly.
2. How does biodigester works or working principle of biodigester technology?
biodegradation is a natural process. tank is design in such a way that it
accelerates the biodegradation process. microbial inoculum used is prepared to
work under extremes of temperature and other environmental conditions. both
these component together carry out biodegradation of human waste rapidly
and convert it into biogas and water. the amount of the sludge generation is
very less because of lower biomass production in the absence of oxigen
(anaerobic process).

18. 3. What is (anaerobic process) AMI ?
Microbial consortium developed by DRDE, Gwalior is a mixture of different type of
bacteria which have been developed by enrichment and acclimatization process. it
is added to biodigester once during its installation. it works in temperature range
of 5 to 50 0c.
4. What is the shelf life of the period of AMI ?
AMI can remain for a period of 3 months if it is stored in a ambient conditions.
5. Does bacteria form biodigester have any effect on human health/environment?
Bacteria does not have adverse effect on human health and environment.
6. What are the area in which biodigester toilet can be used?
Bio digester Technology is applicable for high altitude Areas, glaciers, islands , high
Water table coastal areas, village , seaports, mining area, industrial areas, metro
cities , mobile platforms (railways coaches , busses) etc.

19. 7. How Much time will it take to install?
It is very easy and quick process to install a Biodigester , because it does not require any special
equipment. It only needs to dig a trench (as per Bedsitter size) in desired place and placement of
biodigester into it, further fixing of inter-connections (i.e. from the commode’s outlet till the Bio
digester tanks outlet).
8. How much time gap Is require Between installation of biodigester and Its use ?
Biodigester can be used immediately after installation and seeding of Biodigester with AMI.
9. What is the post Installation maintenance of Biodigester?
Biodigester does not require any maintenance. Routine clearing of the Bio toilet commode and
surface area would be needed.
10. How the Biodigester Is advantageous over septic tank?
The septic tank require large space/volume in turn high cost for construction. The fermentation of
human waste is uncontrolled. The effluent is not treated and the effluent water is not safe
(microbiologically) to discharge into the environment as it may contain pathogenic organisms which
may contain the ground water or nearby water sources. Septic tank is maintenance intensive and
necessitates periodic removal of sludge. These Limitations of septic tanks can be overcome by
installation of biodigester.
