This document provides instructions for a classroom activity where students will work in groups to draft Reconstruction plans addressing the demands of different viewpoints after the Civil War. Students will take on the roles of Radical Republicans, Moderate Republicans, Southern Democrats, or Freedmen. Within their delegations, they will identify demands and then work across delegations to draft an 8-point compromise plan that incorporates 2 demands from each viewpoint. They will present and vote on the plans.
Reconstruction aimed to rebuild the South after the Civil War and guarantee rights for freed slaves, but faced opposition. Radical Republicans sought to punish the South and protect freedmen, while Southerners and Moderate Republicans wanted reconciliation. The Reconstruction Amendments granted citizenship and voting rights to freedmen, but Southern states undermined these with Black Codes and later Jim Crow laws. Reconstruction ended in 1877 through a compromise that withdrew federal troops from the South in exchange for certifying the presidential election, ending Republican rule and protections for freedmen.
The students discussed what they would do if all children under 18 were suddenly freed from their parents and could only take the clothes on their back. Some said they would work for less pay at fast food jobs, while others proposed that the government should provide housing, jobs, or education assistance. There was debate around whether the government should help, as the children now had the choice to stay with parents by doing chores and paying rent.

Final westward expansion presentation 2015 2016MrsBrownMEH
The unsettled land west of the Mississippi River contributed greatly to the growth of the United States after 1865 through territorial expansion enabled by new technologies and innovations. Railroads transported settlers and goods, promoting growth. Inventions like barbed wire and steel plows made farming the prairies viable. Adaptations such as dry farming, sod houses, cattle ranching, and windmills helped settlers survive on the Great Plains. However, unsustainable practices later led to ecological problems like the Dust Bowl.
Final reasons for westward expansion 2015MrsBrownMEH
The document summarizes five key reasons for Westward Expansion in the United States during the late 19th century:
1. The Homestead Act of 1862 provided opportunities for settlers to claim ownership of 160 acres of free land if they made improvements, encouraging migration. Inventions like sod houses, windmills, steel plows, and barbed wire helped homesteaders fulfill requirements.
2. The passage of the Pacific Railway Act in 1862 launched construction of the transcontinental railroad, uniting the country by rail and facilitating travel and transport.
3. The possibility of striking gold or silver drew prospectors to mines in places like California, Colorado, and Nevada, establishing new settlements and wealth.
The document summarizes key events of the Jim Crow era in the United States after the end of Reconstruction in 1877. It discusses the passage of the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments during Reconstruction that abolished slavery and granted citizenship and voting rights to former slaves. After Reconstruction ended, African Americans in the South faced racial segregation and discrimination under Jim Crow laws. They were largely sharecroppers or subject to the convict lease system, which allowed indefinite jailing for minor offenses. The era saw responses from Booker T. Washington, who advocated for vocational education and gradual equality, and W.E.B. DuBois, who believed in full civil, political, and social rights through the leadership

Following World War II, the American economy prospered due to increased production of consumer goods, availability of credit for purchases, and more women entering the workforce. As factories shifted from military to civilian goods, Americans purchased homes and products in high volumes. Labor unions also grew stronger, securing better benefits and pay for workers. This economic expansion created new career opportunities for women in fields like secretarial work, nursing, teaching, and banking.

This economic expansion created new career opportunities for women in fields like secretarial work, nursing, teaching, and banking.
The Cold War began as tensions emerged between the United States and Soviet Union after World War II. They emerged as the two dominant world powers with opposing ideologies - the US advocated democracy and capitalism while the Soviet Union followed a communist system. This ideological rivalry led to an arms race and proxy wars as each nation sought to increase its security and spread its influence.
The document discusses several key factors that led to changing patterns in post-World War II American society, including a strong economy with healthy job growth and increased productivity and demand for American products. It also notes the baby boom population increase, the development of the interstate highway system, and the evolving role of women entering the workforce while still expected to play a supporting role at home. Civil rights legislation expanded educational, economic, and political opportunities for women and minorities. Globalization increased integration between societies through increased trade, information sharing, and improved telecommunications and internet access, impacting American life through greater availability of foreign goods and services and outsourcing of manufacturing jobs.
The document provides background information on the Cold War between the United States and Soviet Union. The rivalry began after World War II when the U.S. dropped atomic bombs on Japan, making them the first to develop nuclear weapons and sparking an arms race between the two superpowers. Both nations stockpiled nuclear weapons out of fear of total destruction if direct war broke out between them, representing the underlying tensions and emotions of the Cold War era.
1. After WWII, the United States helped rebuild Europe and Japan by providing massive financial aid through programs like the Marshall Plan to help their economies recover from the devastation of the war and prevent the spread of communism.
2. Germany was divided into East and West Germany, with West Germany receiving aid from the United States and becoming democratic while East Germany was controlled by the Soviet Union.
3. The United Nations was formed near the end of WWII to replace the League of Nations and prevent future global wars, with the United States taking a leading role.
During WWII, propaganda posters were used on the home front to encourage conservation and rationing, promote victory gardens and canning, recruit more women and African Americans into the workforce, boost war production and the defense industry, warn against talking about the war efforts or spies, and sell war bonds.
The document outlines key aspects of the Holocaust, including the systematic attempt by Nazi Germany to rid Europe of its Jewish population through organized persecution and genocide. It describes the Nazi propaganda promoting antisemitism and Aryan supremacy. The tactics used against Jews included boycotts of Jewish businesses, threats of violence, segregation into ghettos under terrible conditions, and ultimately imprisonment and mass killings in concentration and death camps. As Allied forces advanced in Europe, they began liberating the camps and survivors.
World War II mobilized the entire American homefront and economy to support the war effort. Factories ramped up production and millions of women joined the workforce, taking jobs in defense plants. Americans rationed food and other resources to ensure supplies reached soldiers overseas. However, racial inequalities persisted - while African American workers helped the war effort, Japanese Americans on the West Coast were forcibly interned in camps due to distrust and prejudice.

Political and economic conditions following WWI led to rise of fascism in Europe. The Great Depression caused widespread unemployment and hyperinflation in Germany, punished severely by the Treaty of Versailles. Fascist dictators like Hitler and Mussolini rose to power. As conflict grew in Europe and Asia, American policy evolved from neutrality to involvement. Japan's aggression in Asia increased tensions with the U.S. The U.S. imposed sanctions on Japan. On December 7, 1941, Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, bringing the U.S. into WWII fighting on two fronts in both Europe and the Pacific.
World War II began in 1939 after Germany invaded Poland. The main fascist countries that formed the Axis powers were Germany, Italy, and Japan, led by Hitler, Mussolini, and Tojo respectively. As the war escalated, the Allied powers of the US, Britain, Soviet Union, and others opposed the Axis. Major events included Germany bombing London and battling Britain for air control, Germany and the Soviet Union invading Poland, and Japan attacking Pearl Harbor in 1941 which brought the US into the war. The war was fought on battlefields across Europe and in brutal fighting in the Pacific, until the US dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945, leading Japan to surrender and end World War II.
Dr. Seuss created political cartoons from 1941-1945 during World War II that dealt with America's reluctance to enter the war and confront Hitler early on. The cartoons addressed issues like isolationism, appeasement of Hitler, and the America First movement. After the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, the US declared war on Japan and Germany and fully joined the Allied forces in Europe and the Pacific. Dr. Seuss's cartoons then focused on promoting unity at home, urging support for the war effort through bond/stamp purchases and conservation/rationing of key resources.

Political and economic conditions following WWI led to the rise of fascism in Europe and worldwide economic depression. This political instability resulted in fascist dictators like Hitler in Germany and Mussolini in Italy threatening peace in Europe and Asia. As conflict grew, American foreign policy initially favored neutrality but evolved to providing economic aid to allies through acts like Lend-Lease. Japan's increasing aggression in Asia raised tensions with the U.S., which responded with embargoes, until Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941 brought America into WWII fighting on two fronts in both Europe and the Pacific.
This document provides an overview of the Great Depression that occurred between 1929 and 1941 in the United States. It describes how the optimism of the 1920s concealed economic problems that led to the stock market crash of 1929 and the widespread impact of the Depression on American life, including high unemployment rates, bank failures, bread lines, and declining incomes for many Americans. The New Deal policies of President Franklin D. Roosevelt are also summarized, which aimed to provide relief, recovery, and reform through programs like the Social Security system, public works projects, and assistance for farmers.

After the end of Reconstruction in 1877 and the withdrawal of federal troops from the South, Southern states imposed Jim Crow laws to legislate racial segregation and disenfranchise African Americans. During this time, African Americans faced widespread discrimination in areas like jobs, housing, education, and legal rights. In response, some African Americans migrated north in the Great Migration from 1910 to 1930 to escape harsh racial conditions and seek better employment opportunities in northern and midwestern cities, though they still faced discrimination there as well.
The document provides information about prohibition in the United States in the 1920s. It led to the rise of speakeasies and bootleggers smuggling alcohol illegally which promoted organized crime. Prohibition was ultimately repealed by the 21st Amendment due to these unintended consequences as well as going against principles of individual freedom and costing the government tax revenue from alcohol sales.

2. The year is 1865: the Civil War has ended and no one is sure
how to proceed. The Radical Republicans cry for change, the
Moderate Republicans push for forgiveness. The Southern
Democrats are defeated and furious, and the Freedmen
demand the privileges and rights that come with freedom.
You will work with your peers to come up with a
Reconstruction Plan that describes how to structure American
society, economy and politics from now on. Each plan will
require Compromise to ensure all points of view are heard! (A
compromise is an agreement that is achieved after everyone
involved accepts less than what they wanted at first).
Each plan must address the demands of the 4 opposing
views at the start of Reconstruction: Moderate Republicans,
Radical Republicans, Southern Democrats, and the Freedmen
3. Directions:
Meet with your Delegation: Sit with your delegates and come up with at least 5
demands that your delegation would like to see in your final Reconstruction plans.
Your demands can address political, social or economic issues. Use the graphic
organizer to record your delegation’s demands.
Delegations = all the Radical Republicans together, all the Moderate Republicans together, etc.
Regroup to Draft Reconstruction Plan: Next, meet in your assigned convention
groups to draft your Reconstruction plan. Each member of your group represents
one of the four opposing points of view that existed at the end of the Civil War. As a
group, draft a plan that explains the way post-Civil War America should be run.
This is your chance to make a difference and IMPROVE the future!
Remember, not all of your original demands will be able to make the cut! Some of
your demands might actually contradict those of another delegate. To successfully
draft a plan, each delegate will have to make COMPROMISES by letting go of
some demands or even changing them a little, so that you can come up with a final
plan.
4. Publish Your Final Plan –
Before you begin, make sure to elect one group member that’s responsible
for drafting your plan in a Google Doc…do not share it with me. Once your
plan is final, open the shared Google Slides presentation, locate your
group’s slide number, cut and paste your plan onto your slide.
The link to your class’ shared presentation is on our website: bit.ly/newreconstructionplan
Presentation – Two members of each group will have ONE minute to
present the highlights of your plan…be ready!
Voting – After we review the plans, each student can vote for ONE plan
that offers the BEST chance of long-lasting peace. Use the Google Form
link on our class website.
