E4a1 how defendant characteristics affect jury decision makingAarono1979
Psychologists have studied how defendant characteristics can affect jury decision-making. Research has found that racial stereotypes can influence jurors, with mock juries more likely to find black defendants guilty compared to white defendants who committed the same crime, and give black defendants harsher sentences. Additional research has shown attractive defendants are judged as less guilty and given lower sentences than unattractive defendants. Accent also influences jurors, with regional accents viewed more negatively than posh accents in some cases. These findings suggest jurors may be swayed by superficial characteristics rather than just the evidence.

DAMA Webinar - Big and Little Data QualityDATAVERSITY
While technological innovation brings constant change to the data landscape, many organizations still struggle with the basics: ensuring they have reliable, high quality data. In health care, the promise of insight to be gained through analytics is dependent on ensuring the interactions between providers and patients are recorded accurately and completely. While traditional health care data is dependent on person-to-person contact, new technologies are emerging that change how health care is delivered and how health care data is captured, stored, accessed and used. Using health care as a lens through which to understand the emergence of big data, this presentation will ask the audience to think about data in old and new ways in order to gain insight about how to improve the quality of data, regardless of size.
When working with big data or complex algorithms, we often look to parallelize our code to optimize runtime. By taking advantage of a GPUs 1000+ cores, a data scientist can quickly scale out solutions inexpensively and sometime more quickly than using traditional CPU cluster computing. In this webinar, we will present ways to incorporate GPU computing to complete computationally intensive tasks in both Python and R.

But Bundy’s lack of confidence, and use of manipulation ruined the relationship. Stephanie broke up with Ted due to feeling that he was immature and too childish. Dropping in and out of different schools he finally majored in psychology and was accepted into a law school. Ted also got involved with politics receiving a letter of recommendation from the republican governor of Washington. During this time women in Seattle and Oregon area went missing. Ted moved to Utah in 1974 to attend law school when women started disappearing from there too. About a year later he was pulled over with tools including a crowbar, facemask, rope and handcuffs.(A&E Television Network) Following that was when Bundy started getting convicted of kidnap and murder. While Bundy was on trial for the murders and kidnappings he managed to escape from prison. In result his last attack was to the Chi Omega house where he raped and murder many girls. During this time he also kidnapped and killed a 12-year-old girl. He then shocked everyone by calling Carole Ann Boone to the witness stand and marrying her. Three years later she divorced him after realizing Bundy did commit the murders and gave birth to this daughter. After Bundy tried to save his life countless of times, he was sentenced to death on January 24th, 1989. Right before his execution he had one last interview. The national review noted that Bundy stated in the interv.
John Robinson was a serial killer from Illinois who murdered at least 8 women between 1983 and 1999. He targeted vulnerable single mothers or women with disabilities, promising them jobs, money or medical care for their children. He would lure the women to Kansas City where he would kill them, usually by striking them in the head with a hammer. Robinson disposed of the bodies and went to great lengths to cover up his crimes. He was finally caught in 2000 after investigators linked him to several missing women cases. In 2002, Robinson was sentenced to death for two of his murders.

Minority Youth and Crime: Minority Youth in Court
Youth in general, and young minority males in particular, often are demonized by legislators, the media, scholars, and the public at large. These attacks reinforce stereotypes and place a particularly heavy burden on young Black and Latino males.
LINDA S. BERES AND THOMAS D. GRIFFITH, “DEMONIZING YOUTH”1
In June 2001 Lionel Tate, an African American boy who was 12 years old when he killed a 6-year-old family friend while demonstrating a wrestling move he had seen on television, was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Tate, who claimed that the death was an accident, was tried as an adult in Broward County, Florida; he was convicted of first degree murder. One month later, Nathaniel Brazill, a 14-year-old African American, was sentenced by a Florida judge to 28 years in prison without the possibility of parole. Brazill was 13 years old when he shot and killed Barry Grunow, a popular 30-year-old seventh grade teacher at a middle school in Lake Worth, Florida. Although Brazill did not deny that he fired the shot that killed his teacher, he claimed that he had only meant to scare Grunow and that the shooting was an accident. Like Tate, Brazill was tried as an adult; he was convicted of second degree murder.
These two cases raised a storm of controversy regarding the prosecution of children as adults. Those on one side argue that children who commit adult crimes, such as murder, should be treated as adults; they should be prosecuted as adults and sentenced to adult correctional institutions. As Marc Shiner, the prosecutor in Brazill’s case, put it, “This was a heinous crime committed by a young man with a difficult personality who should be behind bars. Let us not forget a man’s life has been taken away.”2 Those on the other side contend that prosecuting children as adults is “unwarranted and misguided.” They assert that children who commit crimes of violence usually suffer from severe mental and emotional problems and that locking kids up in adult jails does not deter crime or rehabilitate juvenile offenders. Although they acknowledge that juvenile offenders should be punished for their actions, they claim that incarcerating them in adult prisons for the rest of their lives “is an outrage.”3 According to Vincent Schiraldi, president of the Justice Policy Institute, “In adult prisons, Brazill will never receive the treatment he needs to reform himself. Instead, he will spend his time trying to avoid being beaten, assaulted, or raped in a world where adults prey on, rather than protect, the young.”4
Nathaniel Brazill is still incarcerated in the Brevard Correctional Institution. Assuming that none of his pending appeals are successful, he will not be released until 2028, when he will be 41 years old.5 Lionel Tate’s conviction, on the other hand, was overturned by a Florida appellate court in 2003. The court ruled that Tate should be retried because his competency to stan ...

It provides statistics showing that the number of female sex offenders is rising in the US and many states. However, conviction and sentencing rates for females remain lower than guidelines. The document examines several state-specific examples of female teachers receiving probation or light sentences for sexual relationships with students, despite sentencing guidelines calling for heavier punishment. The document argues for equal treatment and punishment of female sex offenders in order to protect children and ensure just application of the law.

Psychological changes and the acceptance of sex inJosh Kaye
This document discusses how media portrayals of sex have changed over time from the 1920s to present day. In the early 20th century, movies started including more sexual content but were still subject to censorship. By the 1950s, TV couples were not shown sharing a bed. Elvis Presley's performances were only shown from the waist up due to censorship. The sexual revolution of the 1960s challenged traditional sexual norms. Punk rock emerged in the 1970s as a rebellious genre. Scandals in the 1990s included celebrity sex tapes being stolen and publicized. More recent controversies featured wardrobe malfunctions and celebrity cheating scandals that were widely covered by the media. The document questions whether extensive media coverage of sex

Sex offenders and the law.tracey.percifield.unit4 ipTpeisi Nesby
The document discusses laws regarding sex offenders in Texas and Florida. Both states have strict laws including mandatory prison time starting at age 18, life imprisonment or the death penalty for certain offenses. Sex offenders must register with the state and have their information made public. Upon release, they are tracked with GPS monitoring and subject to restrictions on where they can live and be around children. Treatment programs focus on counseling, medication, and sometimes involuntary castration for repeat offenders. The conclusion supports these tough laws and penalties as needed to protect victims and communities.

2. ike Tyson
M
Mike Tyson is known for many things (such as his
professional boxing titles) and of course, that face tattoo.
Unfortunately the former heavyweight champion of the
world is also known for another, less admirable incident
that took place back in 1991. Tyson, then 25, was
accused of rape by 18-year-old Desiree Washington. He
admitted to having sex with her, but he claimed that it was
consensual.
The jury did not agree, and Tyson was convicted of the
rape charge and sentenced to six years in prison and an
additional four years probation. After three years behind
bars, Tyson was released and registered as a sex
offender in his home state of Nevada. He is also required
to register as a sex offender in any state that he travels to
prior to his arrival. Other states he is registered in include
Hawaii, Mississippi, and Tennessee.
3. eubens
Paul R
Paul Reubens, also known as Pee Wee Herman, has had
a couple shameful run-ins with the law. In 1991, he was
busted for indecent exposure when undercover officers
caught him exposing himself in an adult movie theater in
Sarasota, FL.
Then, in 2001, officials raided Reubens’ home and seized
images from his computer that included minors engaging
in sexual acts. He appeared in court in 2004 and pleaded
guilty to a misdemeanor obscenity charge and was
sentenced to three years probation. He was also ordered
to register as a sex offender while on probation.
4. R. Kelly
R. Kelly never had to register as a sex offender, but
we still had to include his highly publicized sex
scandal on our list. Unless you were living under a
rock in 2003, then surely you can recall the incident:
Kelly made headlines after he was arrested and
indicted on 21 counts of child pornography, which
were later reduced to 14 counts.
If convicted, he would have faced 15 years in prison,
a $100,000 fine, and mandatory sex offender
registration in the state of Illinois. A Chicago jury
found Kelly not guilty on all counts, but the singer will
always be known for this infamous sex scandal.
5. Watkins
Ian
Ian Watkins is the former frontman of the Welsh rock group,
Lostprophets, and he is undoubtedly the most heinous
scumbag on this list. In December, Watkins was sentenced
to 35 years in prison after being found guilty of multiple
child sex offenses including one count of attempting to rape
a baby. Disgusting, right?
It was also reported that Watkins showed no empathy or
remorse for his detestable actions, and UK Detective Peter
Doyle described Watkins as “the most dangerous sex
offender” he’d ever encountered. Doyle also predicted that
further allegations will continue to emerge while the singer
is incarcerated.
6. Sparks
Shane
If you ever watched the MTV’s America’s Best Dance Crew,
then you’ll recognize Shane Sparks as one of the show’s
judges. The emmy-winning choreographer was arrested in
2009 on charges related to lewd acts upon a child.
In 2011, Sparks pled no contest to one felony count of
unlawful sex with a minor under 16, and he was sentenced
to 270 days in jail and five years probation. In addition,
Sparks was also slapped with a mandatory 52-session sex
offender counseling program.
7. y Jones
Jeffre
Although he looks much older and weathered in his mugshot,
most readers probably recognize Jeffrey Jones from his role
as the school principal in the cult classic Ferris Bueller’s Day
Off. Jones originally registered as a sex offender in 2003
after he pled no contest to hiring a teenage boy to pose for
explicit photos.
But then, in 2010, Jones was busted again when he failed to
update his sex offender registry information. All registered
sex offenders are legally required to update their information
periodically, and failing to do so can lead to additional
charges. In Jones’ case, his negligence resulted in a felony
charge, for which he received 250 hours of community
service.

In 2002, rapper Mystikal (real name Michael Tyler) was
arrested and charged with aggravated assault and
extortion. Allegedly, he and two of his bodyguards made
his former hairdresser perform oral sex on them, telling
her that if she didn’t comply, they’d turn her into police for
cashing unauthorized checks from Mystikal’s bank
account.
The charges were reduced and the rapper pled guilty to
sexual battery, but police later revealed that they’d
discovered a videotape of the alleged assault. This led to
a lengthy back-and-forth dispute between the prosecution
and the defense over the charges. Eventually, the rapper
was sentenced to six years in prison and was required to
register as a sex offender in the state of Louisiana.
9. olanski

Back in 1978, famed Director Roman Polanski was
charged with unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor
after he allegedly drugged a teenage girl and had sex
with her after a photoshoot in actor Jack Nicholson’s
home. Polanski served 42 days behind bars for his
crime, but after his release he got word that a
California judge was planning to send him back to the
slammer.
Instead of accepting his fate, the convicted sex
offender fled to France. His French citizenship
protects him from being extradited back to the U.S,
but a bench warrant was issued for his arrest many
years ago. So, if Polanski ever did choose to return on
his own accord, he’d be in big trouble.
10. e Taylor
Lawrenc
In 2011, former New York Giants linebacker, Lawrence Taylor,
was declared a level 1 sex offender. Offenders in this category
are considered low-risk, and they are not required to have their
photos posted on the online sex offender registry.
Taylor was originally deemed a level 2 offender after pleading
guilty to sexual misconduct and patronizing an underage
prostitute, but his defense attorneys were successfully able to
get his punishment reduced. Taylor was also sentenced to six
years probation.
11. Margera

Vincent Margera, also known as “Don Vito,” was
one of the stars of MTV’s hit reality show, Viva La

counts of sexual assault on a child after he
allegedly groped two girls age 12 and 14.
Margera was sentenced to 10 years probation,
and he was required to register as a sex offender
for a minimum of 10 years, but could be required
to register for life.
12. ndusky
Jerry Sa
In 2011, former Penn State football coach, Jerry Sandusky,
was indicted on 40 counts of sex crimes against children, all of
whom were young boys. The indictment came after a threeyear child molestation investigation that began in 2008. The
worst part was that Sandusky targeted and groomed victims
whom he met through The Second Mile, a youth charity
organization that HE founded in 1977.
The charges against Sandusky included involuntary deviate
sexual intercourse, corruption of minors, endangering the
welfare of a child, indecent assault, and many more. By the
time he went to trial, the charges had increased and the jury
found him guilty on 45 of 48 counts. In October of 2012,
Sandusky was sentenced to 60 years behind bars with
eligibility for parole after 30 years. However, being that he is
already in his late 60s, it’s highly likely that the former coach
will die in prison.

most of which is geared toward new discoveries in medicine
and medical treatment. Some of the researchers he has
supported have even gone on to win the Nobel Prize. So,
judging from his resume and philanthropic work, Epstein
kind of looks like a saint, right?
Well, yeah that may have been the case if it weren’t for his
sex offender status. Yup, in 2008, Epstein began serving an
18-month prison sentence after he was convicted of
soliciting an underage prostitute. He remained behind bars
for 13 months and is now a registered sex offender his
home state of Florida.

Ruben P
Ruben Patterson is a former NBA star who played for
several professional teams including the Los Angeles
Lakers, the Portland Trail Blazers, and the Denver
Nuggets. Unfortunately, his basketball skills are
overshadowed by a long list of off-court incidents. In
2000, Patterson was accused of attempting to rape his
children’s nanny. He pled guilty to the charge, and was
sentenced to 15 days behind bars and two years
probation.
He was also required to register as a sex offender, but
that wasn’t the end of his legal troubles. In 2001, he was
convicted of misdemeanor assault after he attacked a
man outside an Ohio nightclub. Patterson was then
arrested again in 2002 for felony domestic abuse, and
once more in 2010 for drunk driving. Yikes Patterson . . .
get it together!
